Internext in 2 days--Fear of flying... any advice??

I have severe fear of flying and am already starting to feel nervous at the tought of this plane trip... I was told to get Ativan which is suppose to really calm me down and make the trip go smooth. I am not too crazy about taking medication but I prefer that then having a 3 hours panic attack. Anybody has the same problem or some advice? I know most people think this phobia is stupid, and I think so too, but I just cant help it once im on the plane :helpme

LittleMack 07-31-2006 08:00 AM

I know what you are going through. I hate flying. Xanax works great for me. I live in Florida so driving to Miami.

DaddyHalbucks 07-31-2006 08:01 AM

Maybe Valium or something like that. See a doctor to get the right med, you don't want to get sick.

ajrocks 07-31-2006 08:02 AM

Ativan with a few shots of Vodka will take care of your issue for sure. Good luck!

valium and jack daniels.

Mediachick 07-31-2006 08:27 AM

Thank you guys... But I wont be drinking on the plane if I take meds. Im really sensitive to medication since I never take any... Hell a tylenol makes me sleepy :1orglaugh So far, the Ativan might be the one I'd go for. Xanax I tried once or twice but I still feel kinda nervous... Valium, well if you wanna see me in a wheelchair for 48 hours straight, that's what I should take LOL Cant wait the see the crew laughing at me being TOTALLY knocked out on the way and imagining flying hippos over my head.... :stoned

Circus_Penis 07-31-2006 08:28 AM

The easiest thing I found is to maintain a healthy buzz throughout the entire trip. Don't get ripped but enough to get you mellowed out.

CamsLord 07-31-2006 08:29 AM

take adrenamine or something like that

B O B 07-31-2006 08:30 AM

I had a massive fear of flying...but two things cured me...
1. the thought that you have a higher chance of dying from a toaster falling off your kitchen counter and landing in a spot of water on the floor, and electrocuting me....

and

2. Stunt Jets on the Lightspeed Webmaster Adventure Weekend...holy crap!

Donny 07-31-2006 08:31 AM

I have some serious advice for you on this. It helped my cousin get over her own fear of flying.

First of all, statistics show it's safer than driving a car. Think about it: we hear about EVERY plane crash on the news, which really goes to show how rare they are. If we heard about ever car crash we'd never be able to hear about anything else.

Secondly, if you're afraid of the bumps and noises that come with flying do this: take a ride in your car. Have someone else drive and sit in the passenger seat. Close your eyes. You'll notice all the same bumps and jolts and weird noises. You're just used to it. Airplanes are "driving" on the air just as cars drive on the road. The road bounces your car all around, and the air does the same to a plane. It's really no different.

You're in good hands. You have a highly trained staff flying you, assisted by some of the best computers in existence. You're going to be fine. Those pilots want to get home to their families and the wife with a headache just as much as you want to get home to yours.

amacontent 07-31-2006 08:31 AM

I also heard once that there was more chances of dying hit by a coconut falling from a tree then a plane crash.. pretty funny

and

2. Stunt Jets on the Lightspeed Webmaster Adventure Weekend...holy crap!

Any link on that? I'd like to see

Shok 07-31-2006 08:35 AM

You have a btter chance of being hit by lightning after winning the lottery.

Do you really feel that lucky?

Besides, crashing in an airline would be the best way to die.
You wont feel shit.
It will all be over before you can begin to blink an eye.

Then your loved ones will get a nice big settlement from the airline.
So all is good.

Beats the fuck out of dying of cancer all alone with no friends.

monica 07-31-2006 08:38 AM

For myself, distraction helped me a LOT. You need a REALLY good book, or some magazines to hold your attention. Putting on headphones and listening to something you enjoy helps too.

Thanks man.. Good stuff. Actually what really gets to me is those weird 'drops' especially when the plane is descending to proceed to landing. GAwd, I hate those. Ironically the landing is the worse and best part for me. Worse cuz the descending takes forever and best cuz all the weight seems to suddenly get right off my shoulders as soon as I feel that all the wheels are touching the ground... there's nothing more relieving Im telling you :D

polish_aristocrat 07-31-2006 08:43 AM

Im also afraid of flying :(

seeric 07-31-2006 08:43 AM

just get hammered, seriously it works. i used to have terrible fears of flying. that was 15 years ago. now i dont give it any thought at all. i used to have a few beers before getting on the plane, now i fly sober and no stress or anxiety at all.

Kimo 07-31-2006 08:50 AM

dont be afraid of flying

brand0n 07-31-2006 08:53 AM

i go to the bar and hammer down like 10 shots before i get on the plane..

I agree, and tried it before, and its true that it works at a certain level; but this is a business trip... I dont want to get there totally drunk for the first day, i need to meet people and show a professional side, not only to the ppl I will meet but also to my boss and our staff. I wouldnt wanna start puking my guts out on the plane :1orglaugh

Out of all the posts on this thread this is the most accurate. I have severe fear of flying as well, I take Taffil which is a prescribed anti - anxiety pill, which does wonders for me, lat trip I made, I had to fly 6 1/2 hours from Panama to L.A. I took one 1/2 hour before taking off and a second pill after 2 hours in the air and I slept like a baby the rest of the flight. :thumbsup

Is taffil a different brand of Lorazepam (Ativan)? When I ask this is the one that seem to come up the most often... Xanax as well in fact

Marshal 07-31-2006 09:50 AM

take enough wiskey and you'll be just fine! ;)

One major flaw with those statistics:
Most car crashes do not end in fatality.
Most airline crashes do end in fatality.

Though I don't think this helped the cause much :)

Mediachick,
Honestly you have very little to be afraid of. Fear of death is in all of us, and like someone else noted, if it's your time wouldn't you rather be incinerated in .003s on impact than suffer 3 years with a terminal illness?

CheeseFrog 07-31-2006 09:56 AM

This might sound stupid, but it helps me if I watch Top Gun before the flight. Just imagine yourself in an F14 taking off from the deck of a carrier and you're on your way to intercept some Russian MiGs. Any turbulence you encounter is just jetwash, and pretty soon you'll be looking out the window hoping to see rockets flying out from the wings of your plane :)

Lee 07-31-2006 10:13 AM

My advice is to steer clear of the National Geographic channel, especially when Aircrash Investigation is on.

YARGH! I'm the same way, thankfully my flight is only 40 mins. What I do is read a book, or listen to tunes to get my mind off it. You could try drinking alot of alcohol :1orglaugh

True enough! I think im pretty philosophical about the idea of death... In fact Its all in the 'non-control' situation that I lose my calm. I hate the idea of being stuck somewhere and that I cannot decide to make it stop if I really need to. I know its stupid but thats just how I feel.

Hey, maybe you guys are finally gonna heal me...very helpful support so far :thumbsup

JimmiDean 07-31-2006 11:04 AM

The only part of flying that scares most is take off and hopefully landing.
Find yourself a magazine article you really want to read and try to concentrate on it as you take of and land.
It does help a bit.
If you have not flown before get someone who has to prepare you for the sounds etc (landing gear alerons etc) they scare the hell out of people that are not used to flying.
Once you are through the clouds and level out it is all a cake walk from there.
Good luck and see you at the show.

thehornydawg 07-31-2006 11:19 AM

Think about getting in your car and driving 12 hours to Virginia, staying in a hotel - spending $3 a gallon for gas and getting a speeding ticket - then waking up the next day and driving another 12 hours and you are only in Jacksonville...... FUCK!!! Then turning around and doing it again on sunday for the return trip.... your ass will be excited to fly!!!!

I actually did that before... and it was GREAT! (minus the speed ticket) :1orglaugh Love the landscape in virginia and the beaches in Jax are not bad at all... Believe me to trade a few hours on a plane im not difficult. Welcome to the board btw. What do you do?

thehornydawg 07-31-2006 11:30 AM

I'm a newbie - Just starting up a TGP site and playing with the idea of shooting some amateur conent. I work in insurance right now....

Yourself?

spider_x 07-31-2006 11:57 AM

Google up on what astronauts do to releive anxiety. THe main reason you are all phobic is because you are regularly subjected to unnormal levels of G-force which upset the mind.

This sounds like great advice, and if I could sit in the passenger seat and allow someone else to drive, I'd have tried it for sure.

Yes it is, not sure if Ativan, but Tafil is the same as Lorazepam.

Kimmykim 07-31-2006 12:45 PM

You have more chance of dying while you are walking down the street than you do of dying in an airplane crash. And Shok is completely correct, you wouldn't feel a thing and your survivors would be awarded a nice settlement ;)

You'll be fine. What exactly is it about the flying that you are afraid of? Turbulence? Take off? The pilot hitting the ground instead of landing?

media 07-31-2006 12:56 PM

Xanax works good.... I would go this year if I could get a direct flight, I don't want to deal with 3 planes.. each way, last time 3 of the 6 planes I was on or was going to be on had mechanical issues...

Greece, August 2005

Quote:

ATHENS, Greece (CNN) -- A Cypriot plane with "no sign of life" in its cockpit while approaching Athens crashed into a mountain near Marathon on Sunday, Greek officials said. They said all 121 people aboard died.

F-16 pilots escorting the jet after air traffic controllers lost contact with it said one of the pilots was not in its cockpit and another was slumped over the controls, according to reports.

The pilots of the Helios Airways Boeing 737 had reported an air conditioning problem, and Greek TV said a passenger sent a text message to his cousin saying it was freezing in the plane.

"The pilot has turned blue (in the face)," the passenger said in the SMS message, Reuters quoted the television report as saying. "Cousin farewell we're freezing
that was a terrible death for sure :Oh crap
the plane hit the ground after 1 or 2 hours of flying in ske sky after the fuel went out
some people died probably soon after the pilots, some were perhaps alive for a good while as it has been speculated after the accident

Still in the development phase..:) I should have it up soon.......

I'm going to be down at INTERNEXT though....I love to fly - esp when the pilot swings a wide right and turns toward Ft. Lauderdale from the Atlantic Ocean....Such an incredible feeling....

Looks like I have to get 30 posts under my belt before I can post my URL...:)

polish_aristocrat 07-31-2006 01:00 PM

oh and I know it doesnt prove anything and chances that a similar accident will happen anytime soon are minimal

same goes for a september 11th scenario

but still you can't say that if you die in a plane crash, you dont really feel anything.......

StickyGreen 07-31-2006 01:04 PM

here's my advice: quit crying and just get on the goddamn plane...

Mediachick, as long as you hear the engines going then you are ok. When you hear them stop in mid air then its time to panic.
