What is the conversion between Intel Centrino vs. Pentium 4. ie: does a Centrino 1.7 = 2.55 ghz on a P4? I remember reading the conversion was 1.5 but just wanted to verify that with someone who might know... thanks.

I'm pretty sure there isn't any real hard-set conversion, but because of the higher operations per clock cyle, a 1.6Ghz Centrino will roughly perform the same to a P4 2.4-2.6Ghz processor. What?s really impressive about the Centrino is that it only pulls around 14watts, where-as a 2.6ghz P4 pulls almost 83 watts!

The newer centrinos (the ?core duos?) are even faster, and only use about 25 watts.

The Centrino chip is awesome? was a blowback to the PIII chips lol, Intel did something right for once and totally kicked AMD?s ass in the mobile department.

There's no way it would be that high, the cycles don't add up. 2.4Ghz-2.6Ghz max.

I have a Centrino @ 1.5GHz ...
works way slower than my desktop , pIV @ 2.4 Ghz tho..
maybe it's because of the shitty laptop hdd, 4200rpm - have to buy a new one these days

Yeah, it's almost a lack of source info from Intel as well so I don?t think anyone can get a 100% conversion going on. I concluded its speed by converting it out into how many megaflops the chips can do (which is true performance). The 1.66ghz Centrino single core has the ability to execute up to 3 instructions per clock cycle, where as depending on which P4 you have, is usually either one or two instructions per clock cycle. It's a far more efficient chip regardless, and thankfully most people have gotten over themselves having to have 'faster' chips in terms of Ghz. P4 2.6ghz can achieve around 5400 MFlops, where-as a 1.66ghz Centrino gets roughly 5000-5100 MFlops, so it's not quite as fast in terms of grunt 'speed', but since it's far more energy efficient and so little heat it produces... the Centrino is a much better choice. I would really love to test a centrino duo chip soon and compare it to the Conroe's

I have a Core Duo 1.66 and it is completely blown away by my old P4D 3.4 in the real world.

The only place it shines is in certain multi processor aware apps such as Sony Vegas.

nah.. ram is toshiba, I've tested it and it's good.
desktop and laptop have 512MB each, video is goforce-fx 32mb and on the desktop I have matrox millenium g-550

7200 rpm harddrives are a must if you want decent operating use. I don't know about the cpu's but i've seen the difference in harddrives first hand
