Jassie shoot from Thurs...................[pics]

Thursday we did this shoot down in SoCal. I ended up getting some new lights and was itching to try them out. So, what do you guys think? Not to shabby for a first time with strobes.

Not bad for a first attempt but it appears that you may not be balancing your lights right or be using a light meter. If you are going to use strobes, you should work on that.

I've always liked Jassie. I had the chance to work with her back in 2001 in Vegas but never got around to locking it down. I'd still like to shoot her someday.

Keep working on it man......Practice makes perfect.

looks more like window light in the first two. you need to work on your color balance in your camera. magenta skin tones aren't generally flattering.

What camera are you using? Sometimes you can get away with using an opaque piece of plastic (such as a pringles lid) to set custom white balance. Here's my experiment:

a light meter won't help you at all with color temperature. shoot in RAW mode and fix it in post.

here's a 30 sec CC in PS for ya. the good news is these images are salvageable this quick edit in no way is perfect, just a preview of what you could get.

i would NEVER use auto white balance on any camera ever. it's not consistent and each frame will come up with a different color temperature. a total fucking nightmare in post. just my $.02

So an orangeish yellow tint and over exposure look better to you?

Interesting.

The guy is not shooting at a level that would justify shooting in RAW. All he needs is some practice and to balance his camera. A light meter would make the exposures more consistent.....but you already know that.

I know this seems totally am but I really dont like RAW I hear so much good about it, but it seemed like so much trouble. For some pics I do I usually have to do a contrast edit to it. But you know the next time I shoot Ill experiment w/ RAW and Ill get back to you. Thanks for the tip buddy

like i said it's just a 30 sec color correction. generally warm tones look better on skin than magenta. comes down to personal preference though

if not shooting in RAW, then shoot in something other custom white balance. ANY setting would be better than the magenta cast. custom white balance should ONLY be used if you know what you're doing.

Note I said CUSTOM white balance. You shoot a grey/white card and tell the camera to base all further shots on that. You can achieve the same result by shooting through opaque plastic.

The left shot is using custom white balance (set before the shot), the middle is using the camera's white balance, the right is using photoshop and using the wall as the white reference.

A quicker way to do custom white balance is to have the model hold up a piece of white paper, eyedropper it in photoshop ACR, then record the WB settings and apply those to the rest of the pics from the same session.

A good photographer shouldn't have to do anything after taking the picture off the camera, except maybe resizing.

If you depend on post processing, you're not as good of a photographer as you think you are.

(and for the record, I do depend on post processing, but I certainly am no pro photographer)

agreed, but he looks like he needs any help he can get the images overall are fine, it's just a color temp issue.

I'm sorry - I do not agree with this statement at all. A good photographer does whatever he has to do to get the image - that includes post processing (color correcting and exposure adjustments). Post processing IMO is nothing more then a tool - just like a light meter.

Post processing is part of the workflow

I too don't know what the hell I'm doing with my strobes/SLR, but I personally always shoot my pics in the Raw format. Then (within reason) I can fix almost all my problems that SHOULD have been fixed in the camera setup. It's so simple to fix 'em too (at least with the Nikon version. Never tried Canon). Till I know what I'm doing pre-production Raw is a life saver in post-production.

Ya right... you don't know many photographers do you? Keith Lander is one of the top FHM, Stuff, and ex Playboy photographers out there, and also a very good friend of mine. He sometimes spends days on a single photo in photoshop.

So do all of my HIGHLY successful (over $200k a year) photographer friends.

If you depend on post processing, you're not as good of a photographer as you think you are.
having worked at one of the top photo houses in los angeles which processed stills for every movie studio, magazines, as well as top photographers worldwide, your comments bring up a few questions.

do you know any pro photograhers?

what do you base your comments on?

On working with professional photgraphers. There's a difference between using post processing to add spice for entertainment value, and depending on post processing to have a decent picture.

There's something commonly said about post, similar to what you said above.

Photoshop (post) can only make a good photo better. It can fix a bad photo. I can tell you from experience it is MUCH easy to try an take the photo correctly, then to depend upon photoshop to fix mistakes. The time factor alone makes it worth taking your time.

That's why if he understands CS2 and shoots in RAW, it would make his life a little easier. But it all takes practice.
