I wouldn't condone it. You could also get in trouble, why risk it?

Fandangos.com (my main abp demo site) gives full credit on each post, does not change links, and is generally I think a good example of what abp sites can be.

4400+ pages indexed in google about 40k unique per month. Steady consistent sales using relinker from UNLINKED word/phrases. Custom ad spots on each article. Best of all... it's all dynamic so I can change anything at anytime site wide from one admin tab.

That's why I use ABP. It works.

I say go after the guys who are stealing. Vox is on the right track there -- he's going after a guy who has outright stolen the content from his small site, removed all references to the original small site, and then changed the links from the small site and used them on the other blog. I am not sure about the strategy of spending the money and time on a cease and desist to a variety of people, before just asking the guy to remove it, but to each his own -- I don't personally have the time for that, but if you're a small time webmaster, you should definitely do all you can to protect yourself.

to Vox on this one.

Nice catch!

You might consider revising the message at the bottom of your page to more explicitly define the uses of RSS you intend to allow. I did a L/LG/FL/LN indexing search and didn't find a single case where someone was able to sue successfully (or even get an injunction) without a narrowly defined usage statement on their RSS.

It just helps to protect you, AND it helps you get something "back" if you end up having to sue jackass thieves.

It's very simple. Create a narrowly defined usage statement for the RSS feeds. For example:

Our RSS Feed, located at (location) may be used in the following ways:

1) By users wishing to add our RSS feed to their browsers, thereby pulling daily updates.

2) By users wishing to add our feed to "favorites" pages on Google, Yahoo, or other portal networks.

Our RSS Feed and page content may not be used for:

1) Syndication to other sites outside of our network, for any reason. Failure to comply will result in blah, blah, blah (insert threats that can't be followed up on, and are too expensive to pursue anywany, but get people scared).

Basically, this tells people wishing to pull the feed what they CAN use it for, and what they CAN'T use it for. Stick a link to it close to your feed buttons, and at the bottom of your page. You might also consider tagging it into the RSS feed somehow, although I don't have the technical details on that.

It won't STOP people from "stealing," but it WILL give you more backup against the "oh, I didn't know I couldn't use it!" thing. People pulling your content are mostly honest webmasters (I pull a lot, myself), but the scumbags who do bad things with it, and don't send you linkbacks, traffic, etc. in exchange should lose their hosting.

Good luck with it, man!

Chio, it's not your problem. People are going to abuse no matter what. I can manually change links just as easy. Personally, I would run the content in silent mode rather than change someone's links. I have ethics.

If you are a blog owner and dont want your shit ripped and changed then its your responsibility to add a layer of protection like making people sign up to get your feeds. People steal content all the time protected or not and it';s not ABP's job to protect your content for you. It's like blaming a gun store for someone using a gun in the wrong way.. Not their responsibility IMHO..

I think, substantively, you're right -- obviously, don't blame ABP for people stealing content, just because it has feature A or feature B. I mean, shit, from the command line, I can just type "wget site.com" and suck down your content anyway.

But there should be NO LOVE for people who steal other people's shit. There's the "right" way to pull feeds, and there's the "wrong" way to pull feeds -- and it doesn't take a genious to figure out which is which.

I disagree that blog owners should have to do something "special" with their feeds to protect them -- the whole point of RSS is to make it easy. If sponsors just shit-canned the accounts of people who steal, it wouldn't be profitable to do so.

Keep reporting thieves, and make posts about the sponsors who don't do shit about it.

If you are using wordpress then you can get this plugin.
http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/a...ss-atom-feeds/

Quote:
This plugin adds a copyright message to your feed items. No customization is required. This acts as a deterrant to feed-stealers (you heard the word first here) who unscrupulously and blatantly displays your full feed contents (often with their own advertisements) in their site(s) without your permission.
They are stealing entire BLOGS you can call it RSS FEEDS all you want but its still part of the webmasters site they are STEALING from and they also just go in and change the affiliate codes to their own after they rip your entire blog.. I guess in another thread they are also cloaking the RSS feeds for the SE's. THANKS GUYS for taking all OUR HARD WORK RIPPING it for your OWN USE.

I totally agree with you... All i meant by blog owners protecting their content is that people will steal. sad but true.. you may not be able to completely stop theft, but i think you can curb it if you make some extra effort..

The "stealth mode" feature changes things, though. That feature is seemingly intended solely for all the wrong purposes: continuing to use (in one way or another) content which you have been explicitly told not to use. That makes it more like a hitbot than a gun.

Btw, your idea that webmasters are responsible for not getting ripped off is ridiculous. With that kind of reasoning, you can justify the stealing of designs, content, everything. When something is intended for the public, it's always easy to steal. The point is that stealing is illegal and immoral.

I disagree, and have never used that feature for the purpose you're talking about.

I use it to pull in so-so feeds and not show them to my core userbases. Some feeds are too ugly to be ready for prime-time, but are still nice for SEO.

Good point. Still, the way it's described on the AGB website makes it seem rather different:

*Stealth Mode: This is one of our most ambitious features to date. Some smaller sites that make RSS feeds available do not realize they are making their content available for other sites to use legally. They sometimes ask to remove content that you have pulled from them. With this feature you can show a custom "removed" link human readers will see, while Google, and the sitemapper continues to see the original article text.

Yeah, I wish that text would change so people don't get the idea. That was something the old coder added (he's no longer with the company, from what I understand).

It's a great plugin but you do realize that this is completely ineffective now with the new rewriter? As I stated earlier I don't like that rewriter can be used to change/remove anything from a post, but this is in a post.

It's more for legality issues, not so much to fill the post.

Btw, your idea that webmasters are responsible for not getting ripped off is ridiculous. With that kind of reasoning, you can justify the stealing of designs, content, everything. When something is intended for the public, it's always easy to steal. The point is that stealing is illegal and immoral.
i think you missed my last post... i HATE thiefs. but yes, webmasters do have some control when it comes to stealing. we all know that some people are going to steal, its life as sad as it may be.. thats all i meant....

Yeah, I saw your post only when I already had made mine. And you're right, people are going to steal no matter what.

Hey, cocklips, would you mind not being such an asshat, and painting with such a broad brush?

There are plenty of hard working ABP users like myself -- and I guarantee I make more on my 1099's than you do on yours, writing your own content. In fact, if you pick a neutral third party, I'll send them $20,000, you send them $20,000, and we'll both send our tax returns from last year. Highest return takes the $40,000 total. Deal?

ABP, to date, has sold over 3,500 liceneses. Most of those are to people who own large blog networks, who want to dynamically relink and rewrite content, pulling from their own networks.

You're an absolute scumbag if you paint with a broad brush like that.

i think its like writing an essay, refer the source but also be able to modify the content outside of what was posted.

Don't be so sterotypical, I'd expect more from someone who is in the Adult industry.

There are reasons we added the functionality that rewriter has, it wasn't to rewrite other peoples affiliate codes, it was to allow you to have one source of content and manipulate it across a network of sites. If you have 500 blog sites do you really want to do 500+ unique posts a day? No. with rewriter you can jumble data around so you simply use one source, but have 500 differen't posts.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to talk to some programers over at wordpress and see what they can come up with. Maybe this is a good story for Wired News. Some of you fucks have been stealing from a lot of my blogs I hate how lazy some of you are.

What if someone just went in and ripped out an entire members area all their photos and text then put it up on a blog is that legal?

That might have been what you intended it for but that's NOT what its being used for.

This issue made the front page of the Boston Globe last weekend. Steps are already underway to protect bloggers as blogs get more popular.

The internet was not intended for people to break into eachothers servers, but it happens now doesn't it. Hunting rifles are meant to hunt animals, not kill people, but it happens as well. You going to go blame gun shops now as well?

It's going to be to hard to protect against. It's like setting a hot plate of food on your porch and yelling at stray cats for eating it.

ya lets not blame big tobacco either for killing millions of people. i mean they only provide the product.

i have never understood why people here praise a program that uses other peoples content in order to increase their sales and SERP results.

especially when 90% of the feeds come from the unknowing
