The Greeks and the Turks - F16 collision

Okay, explain this to me. The Greek Air Force and the Turkish Air Force had a mid air collision. Both sides were flying US made F16s. Doesn't this strike anyone as odd?

Ya I don't get the odd part either. The US is the biggest arms dealer and two of their clients had an accident.

The Greeks and the Turks hate each other. If this is so, why are we selling them both warplanes?

Just guessing, but:

1. They both have money to pay.
2. Neither of them are likely to pose a significant threat to the US.
3. If the US sells to one country and not the other, then the one not receiving planes will have a reason to be pissed at us.
4. If the US refuses to sell to both countries, they'll both be pissed and uncooperative in other ways.

Actually I'm not even sure the US government actually sells the planes anyway - it might be the manufacturer, a private company, selling these items.

of course we sell them...we're #1 in international arms sales

as far as selling f-16's to people...we don't care....if they aren't friendly to us in the future...we won't give them the software upgrades....their heat signatures will easily be picked up & shot out of the sky with the simplest of anti-aircraft missles

just ask venezuela

BECAUSE ITS GOOD BUSINESS!

Do you actually think that the USA want to keep the peace or sell more planes?

Hmmm ... lets see ... make billions of dollars or give a shit if two countries hate each other. Choices - choices.

5. Both countries are in NATO and that makes them USA allies. That gives the USA a nice excuse to sell weapons to both of them and at the same time not give a shit if they might end up killing each other.

Mmm.. The US is basically the largest arms trader in the world and sells more arms internationally than all other countries combined and will sell arms to "anyone" as long as there is a dollar to be gained.

Prior to the invasion of Iraq there was an international arms fair in Tehran and of course the US was displaying weaponary and not being left out in the cold despite "we don't like Iran".

It also may be relevant that arms and wheat remain the only who areas where the US has a trade surplus - they rest are all deficits.

Here's some freaky shit ...but you probably won't believe it anyway

When I was 11 years old...I lived at Incirlik Air Force Base in Turkey

One early morning...I had a dream where I saw an F-16 fly straight into the ocean in a bay. There was no fire or anything on the plane..no explosions or anything...the plane just flew straight into the water

I woke up and couldn't sleep...because it felt like I had really seen a crash and a pilot get killed.

My mom was already up cooking breakfast for my dad...so I got up and sat down and told her about my dream...

Back then...there was a single TV Station on the base...

About a half an hour after I told my Mom the dream...the military interrupted the TV station to report that a pilot on maneuvers at Incirlik had just been killed in an accident.

Later we found out...that the pilot had pulled too many Gs and got knocked unconscious...and flew his plane directly into a bay on the Mediterranean..He never made any attempts to eject or anything..he was totally unconscious.

anyhow...my mom freaked out.

She tried to find out more about what had happened

turned out...the pilot had sat near us in Church that Sunday...

This freaked out my mom even more...Because my Grandmother used to have the same thing happen to her...she would be know people or meet people and see visions of how they would die..she would wake up in the middle of the night with dreams

Anyhow, this post just made me remember what happened

ANKARA (AFP) - Greek and Turkish F-16 fighter jets collided in mid-air over the eastern Aegean Sea, an area where the two NATO allies often engage in mock dog fights amid disputes over airspace.

Yeah, it's definitely possible. Modern fighter jets can reset seperate subsystems midflight. It's very literally an on-off switch for the computer. The software controlling planes is all compartmentalised off, so you can, as an example, reset only the weapons software, or the radar software or whatever. I'm not certain what happens if you need to reset the make-the-plane-fucking-fly software, although I'm going to wager if you just level the jet off and hit the switch, it won't drop out of the sky.

Fighter jets are not "planes" in the sense that they do not "glide" sans power. A jet with engines "off" is like a rock. It will fall out of the sky straightaway. There ain't no "bringin' 'er home on a prayer". A jet is basically just THRUST and CONTROL SURFACES... in other words... a MISSILE.
