Have you ever had to get rid of a pet?

I've been seriously thinking about getting rid of one of my cats, She's become a problem lately with urinating on the rug in the kitchen, we wake up, and there's a piss spot... This is happening every day, we have about 4 rugs we rotate and wash and place back in the kitchen and I am honestly getting tired of it..

So I think it's coming down to the point of us trying to get her adopted out at the humain society, we've checked her out neumerous times at the vet office (my wife is a vet tech) and there is absolutely nothing wrong physically with her.

We think it's more of a mental issue or a behavioral problem that she is displaying.. It sorta breaks my heart to have to get rid of her, but I do not like animals who cannot piss in 1 of 3 cat litter boxes in the house..

Anyone had anything similar to this happen? How did you solve it? I really hate feeling like I'm giving up on her... but we cannot be home at all hours of the day, and I don't want it to spread to the actual carpet... that would suck.

if it is only urinating on the rug i think you should keep it..
it deserves to be treated well...
you can't get rid of people pissing in beds at night too...

ask for professional help..
nobody else will take the cat if you tell what is wrong with it.
no creature deserves death because of some "slight" problem like this

There's a spray on the market you can get that cat's hate the smell of and will usually avoid whatever its sprayed on, but its not always effective.

We had a cat like that once also - but the constant pissing all over the place was due to the onset of kidney and liver failure.

Sometimes they're territorial with the litter boxes (we've got 3 cats and 3 boxes).

Maybe try a squirt gun - whack the cat with a stream of water if you catch it pissin' where its not supposed to. Might correct the behavior, might not.

Our cats are like kids to us...so we'd try anything before getting rid of the animal.

We had to give up our two small dogs when our son was born, because they didn't take too kindly to his presence.

We took out an add in the paper and interviewed prospective homes. We didn't want to split them up, but fortunately two good friends in a small town nearby each took one.

Ok... let me clarify a couple things here about this cat...

1. She is asthmatic, has had a long battle with it. She was a good-sam adoptee by my wife and myself
2. She had liver disease last year, cost me $2500 after leslies discounts of about 70% (took her to OVRA - Oregon Veterinary Referrals Association, specialists who treat hard case animals)
3. She has been staying in the closet in my office completley shutting herself away from the rest of the house, even when I pull her out to sit in the sun she will not stay there long, and runs right back into the closet, she comes out to piss on the mat, and eat.
4. We've already had her looked at for possible diabetes and a recurrance of her liver issues. but nothing is visible in bloodwork.
5. This has been going on for over a year now that we've been changing the rug every day.. it's not just a "little problem" any more...

This is her, she's a sweet cat.. I really wish this was not happening, she's about 9 years old now I think...

Have you tried putting one or more littler boxes on the spot(s) where she pisses or in the closet where she hangs out?

I've never had a pet.. so.. no, I've never had to do that. But one of my cousin's dogs had to be put down b/c she went insane. She started ripping the couches, curtains etc. I think it was b/c she was a police dog and when my cousin got her, she didn't walk the dog or anything so. Hmm.. not sure :\

Yep ... there is a clean fresh litter pan 2 feet from the closet that she sleeps/hides in... it's ALWAYS clean, we're really good about scooping piss or shit outta the boxes as soon as we see it... so generally there is not more than 5-6 hours that the litter box may have one clump in it... she will use the box to crap, and piss, but she'll also do the dirty deed on the mat in the kitchen...

I have a siamese who is a pain in my ass, she pukes everywhere daily and there is NOTHING wrong with her.. we've checked. She pukes in shoes, backpacks, in open dresser drawers, on clean clothes, if you can imagine it, she has probablly puked there too. It SUCKS! On top of that she is the most ANNOYING cat ever!

As for getting rid of em, other than finding a home, making them an outdoor cat, or taking a chance with their lives at an animal shelter, looks like you're going to have to try every preventative measure out there. Good luck!

I see, well when you put a litter box on the carpet where she pisses what does she do just go next to it? If so, have you tried putting another litter box there and another until the whole carpet is effectively covered with litter boxes and she has no choice but to use one or will she just keep finding new spaces on the carpet to use?

Another idea is to cut out a piece of carpet the size of the litter box that she has previously pissed on and put it in the litter box and put the box on the carpet where she notmally pisses and see if she uses it.

That would be right in front of the kitchen sink... not a practical place to put the litter pan.... we have 3 pans... one in the bathroom, and one in each bedroom where the cats hang out, they hang in their own rooms mostly to have their own space..

A few times I've walked out to get a glass of water, and stepped in the piss, it's pretty fucked up when that happens....

The fact that you've got 3 litterboxes means you've probably got a lot of cats. In my experience, cats start pissing outside the litterbox when they're feeling overcrowded or ill. There could be too many cats for the amount of room you have, or maybe one of your other cats is intimidating or picking on her.

If you don't want to build another wing on your house, you probably need to give away some of your cats; giving away the problem cat is the surest solution, although if you don't completely eliminate the urine odor you may find another cat starts doing the same thing.

1) clean the litter boxes clean (daily)
2) theres a no-urine spray out on the market that is awesome (petsmart.com)
3) never should get rid of a cat for something that is correctable
4) pay attention to her, play with her, sit down beside a litter box for a while with her so she gets used to the cats coming and going and she'll pick that particualr one to urinate in.

cats need to have 1 litter box and 1 bed that they call their own, at least in the begining. its their own stuff, so its comfort for them. theres a lot of good advice in this thread. try it all before giving her up and giving up on her.

We have TWO cats.... And one dog, the dog minds her own business and never messes with the cats...

In fact, the only time that my cat pisses on the mat is when the dog is locked in the bedroom with myself and my wife...

This has been happening for over a year people.. do you not think that I have tried everything possible at this point? We have 4 rugs we rotate, 3 litter boxes, have checked her out with specialists, and they say it is all behavioral issue.

I pet the cats daily, give them their share of attention each, I brush friday all the time, pet her, and play with her.. We are good pet owners, probably better than average I would say.. We've dealt with this for over a year, and it has not gotten better or gone away.. the only time it does not happen is if I lock the door and keep her in the extra bedroom where her hideout closet and litter box is...

Well I did not mean to suggest it as a permanent solution but rather temporarily and if/once you are able to retrain her to use the box in front of the kitchen sink gradually start moving it away. Behavioral problems can take time to change as cats are creatures of habit.

If simply moving one or more boxes in front of the sink does not work, then it is not the physical spot that she is attracted to but rather the smell of her urine that she keeps leaving behind. If that is the case, try cutting out a spot on the mat where she has recently urinated, DO NOT clean it, remove the rest of the mat and clean the carpet around the sink real well, put the cut out piece in the littler box and put the box in front of the sink. If she goes for it, gradually cut the mat in the litter box to a smaller peice until it is gone and gradually move it to a more convenient area.

Media, that's a bummer dude. I had a cat for 11 years that started doing that out of nowhere. Never did find any rhyme or reasoning for it, but I was too attached to him to send him away. They grow on you like children. Eventually he just stopped after about 6 months or so of periodically wet throw rugs.

Best thing i could suggest is just start peeing on the spot that she pees on. She will see that the territory has been marked and move on =)

Nine years old is probably a bit late to be picking up habits. Do whatever you can to make her feel at ease, and don't worry too much about the carpeting. That's what you have to do.

Our dog Tela (Blue Heeler) went through 3 months of behavioral modification training with us after we adopted her (another good-sam animal, her owners let her get into a bag of marijuana and morphine, she was almost dead and leslie stayed after hours that day to help her recover, the hospital had the sherrifs office issue a forced surrender notice, and we kept the dog and paid its bills) so it's not like we just don't try solutions with our animals, we're pretty upset that this is happening as we would rather just have her continue to be a normal cat living in our house...

I would say gall stones or diabetes, but if she's been checked...

What happens if you don't put the carpet there?

Sometimes, not all the time, she will piss in the bathroom 3 feet from one of the three boxes, not even making it in there.. but she does always crap in the boxes... wtf????

My other cat albert, who I bottle fed since he was 3 days old is totally cool and never pisses on the carpets or rugs or floors...

We just had the exact same problem with one of our cats, we ended up making her an outside cat. We never had her declawed, so it all worked out

we just feed her outside and she has a little box out there now...she LOVES it now, but it took a few weeks for her to get used to

now we will let her inside every now and then, but the minute I open that back door she runs top speed out there to get out into the woods

it is called SSSCAT, and it is a motion detector with a mist that sprays when the cat gets near it

we have 4 of them in the house, but we also have a big house

When I was about 12 we had two cats that were having the same problem with peeing. One day they peed on some of my dad's important papers from work. He got so mad and made us get rid of them that night. I ended up finding a friend with a farm that took them. They probably ran away.

Seriously, I was 12 and I still have flash backs now and then about how horrible that night felt.

Also..the last cat that I had that died this last November suddenly started to pee everywhere after never really having done it before. In the end they found out she was diabetic and that was why. She died from it in the end.

Well, since this has been going on for some time I suspect your cat thinks this is normal and thus keeps doing it. Cats mark their territory. Cats have great sense of smell. When a smell fades, they remark it. Everytime you clean and replace one of the four mats, the next time the cat wanders through, she probably detects a lower than normal scent in that area and says to herself oh I need to remark this area. The key is to gradually retrain her that this normal behavior should be done in the littler box. I would try what I suggested in my previous post.

I had a cat, until I ran it over with the lawnmower. Best day of my life!

She pisses on the regular flooring.. Then I usually step in it walking out to have my morning smoke or to get a glass of water in the middle of the night.

Is there a way to deny her access to that room during the night? If she likes the closet, put her bed in there, the litter box just outside the closet but in the room, and a dish of water for her, but shut the door. She probably already considers that room hers and not something she needs to mark.

In that case it's probably incurable.

Pantyhose. Make a "rug" out of pantyhose and put it where the one she pees on goes. My wife's grandmother puts them under the Christmas tree to keep the cats out of the gifts.

They hate walking on nylons... I don't know if it'll work but it's worth a try if you really want to keep the cat
.
