If they pull off the .xxx extension, the next step will be all the ISP's installing filters to block it. Then the government is going to force the major search engines to filter out anything with a .xxx TLD. IE will be set to block .xxx also.
-------------------------

my reply

ISP won't filter out porn or .XXX or ICRA ratings or whatever. Porn and P2P are the major drivers for high speed bandwidth. The consumers wants access to porn, and the ISP merely provide the conduit.

If a parent wants to pay extra for their ISP to do filtering, they absolutely have that right. So if an ISP uses a blacklist, .XXX, ICRA rating, etc, there is nothing wrong with that... a parent or individual that doesn't want to see porn, is never going to be customer, so there is nothing lost by filtering.

IE already has the PICS setting that people can block out porn based on the PICS/ICRA rating. Again, there is nothing wrong with this, since the kind of people who want filtering, aren't customers anyways.

And lastly, yes, search engines SHOULD be doing some kind of filtering, and they don't need .XXX for that.. plenty of other ways to do so.

So to stay back on track with this thread target, yes, it will be landgrab for some... let them. Let them rush to spend their $75/domain and let them be the first ones to get blocked!

Stick with your .com and vote against .XXX by not getting the domain. Getting a .XXX domain and not using it, is the same thing as voting for it... you think you are hedging your bet, but what you are doing is sticking money into ICM's bank account.

What happens when lawsuits start hitting ICM, that they are distracted or don't have the funds to set up the infrastructure to handle the volume of lookups for .XXX?

Your money and your .XXX sit in limbo.

If your money is going to be sitting somewhere, it should be making you money.

Fight the .XXX!

One thing I'm not clear on is this: Does this only affect US webmasters? If I do not live in the USA, who is going to stop me from running a .COM (as well as .XXX) domain name? I have signed the petition, and posted it to the Adult Editor forum at DMOZ, hopefully get some support there too.

I read in one ICANN post, that a great comment was made that .XXX will make it easier for kids to find porn.

One of the claims by .XXX supporters is that adults will see the .XXX and be more likely to click on it.

I don't see MORE traffic going to a .XXX domain for these reasons:

1) if someone uses .XXX to filter out porn, they aren't the target customers anyways

2) given the way SE results come back, there is already a short blurb of text that lets the surfer know a little bit about the .COM domain, they use that to decide what to click

now back to the idea that .XXX will make it EASIER for kids to find porn.

a kid could type in gijoe.xxx and could end up at a porn site (as long as hasbro didn't sue the website first for trademark infringement).

whereas if a kid typed in gijoe.com they wouldn't see porn.

there are many instances where kids curiosity to just slap on a .XXX at the end, to see if anyone did create a porn site, will mean it will be EASIER for kids to find porn!

.XXX is not a US-only thing.

Anyone can register a .XXX domain if they become available.

What the fear is that there are U.S. laws being proposed to make .XXX mandatory for US-based companies.

EU would never go for that, since they already stated they support a .KIDS TLD idea.

could it be related to this GFY replay:

Thread link: http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...5&page=1&pp=50

poster: lensman

subject: .xxx - the best way to stop censorship.

message:

Think about it. If adult content was on it's own TLD, it's easy to block it for kids. No major isp is going to block it, because they'd lose 20% of their customers. And people that want porn will have the power to see it.

I'd rather have that than have the US gov't try to prosecute people.

And if ICANN enforces it, it would be worldwide. The KEY is that the registry MUST allow the current .com owners to get the same domains as .xxx, without the regisgtered tm bs. If you own a .net, you are second in line. If they don't, I can see lots of lawsuits.

you would hope that biz is biz, and how someone feels about .XXX has nothing to do with their business relationships.

whenever some other big issue comes up, these "leaders" might come forward, only if the issue hits them squarely in the wallet, because the moral issue of standing up doesn't seem to hold as much weight as the potential financial losses...

So, RogerV is posting as RogerV5 and RogerV10 too? That is pretty sad if true.

No, I don't go to Canada.

Don't go to Canada? On what grounds? Can't stand the cleanliness?

You give far too much credit. If such analyses were the norm, we would handle ourselves much better in situations like this than we do. It is also apparent that online porn has no leaders, but is just a collection of very ordinary people, some of whom happen to have made a lot of money.

Simply to survive, people entering the business now have to be more professional than their predecessors. So from among those who are successful, over our second decade likely will come people who understand the importance of protecting their environment as well as attending to their immediate concerns. I guess we just have to hope that enough of the ceiling stays put until then.

jayeff..you post reminded me of the very first time i heard about this .XXX. I was brought up to speed by someone who has been in the online adult biz almost since it started, he at that time informed me about "the group" that is involved with .XXX ...they are older, been around along time, made a ton of money in this biz, also i dont sit at the same table they sit at ( he did say i would one day lol)

I was also told that ALOT of money had changed hands for introductions and deals behind closed doors were made to secure votes and support....some of those that supported then, dont now.

The best part that really got me going was: "there was nothing i could do about it, and there is far to much money involved to stop it" When i hung up the phone, that was maybe the best and worst thing he could have said to me at that time.

It got under my skin that a few older members of our biz can make the money they did then take a big fat crap on the very biz they helped create and make all there money with. Amazing!

So the good news we dont do any biz with any of those people, and dont plan on ever doing biz with them or any one like that. There are a ton of really great people in this biz that choose to take it as a real biz, and hopefuly in the end that will show it self.

Soon i hope.

NO to .XXX

Except that it isn't amazing.

How many people who have enjoyed major success do you think are running businesses they still understand? Come to that, how many do you think have any real ambition left or even still enjoy turning up for work every day? I'm not being patronizing: I have been through this myself.

I started my first business in a 2-room basement with almost no capital. In less than 5 years it was in its own building with a 7-figure turnover. Very nice, but what almost no-one ever considers is that the job of growing a company from zero to its first million is totally different from that of earning its fifth million or its fiftieth. The focus of a business changes as it grows, shifting from earning money to managing it. The different phases require completely different skills and experience, even different pyschology and they are rarely all going to turn up in a single individual.

My response was to sell out and start something new. But I guess this business offers more support for fragile egos than most, among them opportunities to make sordid deals as a way of feeling still in control.
