What is a 1Mbps capped line?
My server is going slow as shit, host says I have a 1Mbps capped line.
Not knowing much about this, could somebody offer a simple unbiased explanation, do I need burstable to overcome this problem. The server does not use much bandwidth at all really. Probably less than 30 gig per month approx. ![]() |

OMG 1 meg is like DSL and is not enough for any website. Most higher end hosts allow burst up to 10 megs for shared accounts. Also there is different quality with bandwidth and running a network, slowness can be caused by several means. Remember the main reason why people leave a website is because it's too slow! |

Yeah, I'm learning slowly...
This dedicated server is slower (download speeds etc) than my old host was on a shared account. Ok, so I guess I NEED burstable bandwidth, and if they can't/don't offer it, I should move? My sales HAVE been shitty these past week or two, can't help but think this slow server is the reason. |

Thanks for the help...
I know what you're saying about slow sites... the Internet masses have ADD, very short attention spans and if they don't get what they want NOW, they click away... I do it myself. That article was written in 2001 and broadband is much more widespread now so it's less of an issue on file size for more and more people, but speed of site - I accept is still massively important. Will see if they can go burstable, if not I'll get another host. |

1 megabit is about 320 gigs of transfer per month

A 1Mbps capped line will never output more than ~100kbps you have 320gb/month of bandwidth however you'd have to push the 1mbps constantly to use it all.
Essentially you're creating a bottleneck. Most hosting providers offer uncapped servers and you pay for the bandwidth. |
