OMG 1 meg is like DSL and is not enough for any website. Most higher end hosts allow burst up to 10 megs for shared accounts.
Also there is different quality with bandwidth and running a network, slowness can be caused by several means.
Remember the main reason why people leave a website is because it's too slow!
