Do it if you can live with a "free cap". In lasik they make a flap on your eye which they flip back to do the laser incisions beneath. When the surgery is done the flap is flipped back over the hole, everything heals and you got 20/20 right? Well, about 85-90% of the time this is all well and good. But the other 15% of the time the flap becomes separated from the eye, know as a "free cap", and you're screwed! I have heard the flap comes loose from daily eye and eyelid movement, rubbing your eyes, or anything where there is direct contact to your eye like swimming and skydiving.

go to Russia and have it done AMP
those fuckers started the procedure and have it down to an art form of course they do put you on an assembly line and the doctors will bore you to death with their, "when i used to be a cheating, hitbot adult webmaster" stories perks...lots of vodka before and after the operation and if you go, say hi to Dr. Maltzokinski, he did a killer job on one of my prized gophers ![]() |

well, Tanker... your post was the most inspiring by far..... and I've resolved myself to getting this done before I fly off to Maui..... I checked out the link you posted, but sadly, the only one in Cali is in Fresno.... and I ain't going to fucking Fresno for anything...
so if anyone knows of a good eye surgeon in the Bay Area,.... hit me with it now..... I'm in the market. ![]()

yeah what about contacts, they aren't the best but can offer better vision and more flexibility while doing active sports etc

I'ev talked to many eye surgeons who are my closed friends. They have done numerous such operations without problems, 0% chances of failure. But they do not advise the operation - they say they only do it if the patient really wants it. In fact they advise against it at this stage, mainly for the long term questions. The myopic eye is a growing eye and a diseased eye, which is thinned out, and its size increases over time. Also there are other changes at old age. Since the procedure is a new one, they havent seen the patients after say, 30 years after the operation. The effect of the operation after 30 years would be anyone's guess. As for the short term effects everyone who's done it is extremely happy.

First of all, the laser won't blind your eye.
But I've read about people who had this done and their night vision went really bad. Some people complained that lights that were normal now seemed too bright and bother some. I've even read about a few people who had the opperation and later on found they were seeing weird visual distortion. |

give the procedure some time to truly perfect itself.
Maybe in a year or two it will be vitrually risk free.

I spent the 5k on Lasik in 99 and It's the best 5k I ever spent!
I would do it again. In and out in less than 15 minutes and within an hour or two you'll start to see better than you have in years. The first night is really cool, all of the headlights and street lights look like starbursts, too bad it goes away LOL I do have night vision problems but it seems the same as it was before I had it done. My boss at the time didn't put up the 5k for Lasik and went for the needles (Radial Keratotomy), he had many problems, had to get it redone and still never got it quite right. The laser is the only way to go ![]() |

I had the surgery done about 2 months ago. Cost 3K in Providence. My vision is now 20/15 (better than 20/20). Just make sure you go somewhere that the doctors check your eyes beforehand and know what they are doing in case something happens. Avoid the cheaper places that are out for numbers because they cut corners and use worse quality lasers.

I had my eyes done in Dec 00 by LasikVision in Montreal for $1100 USD and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. Procedure itself took 15 mins (smells like burnt hair though), and a few days later I had 20/25 vision (I was nearsighted). Sure it's scary, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. Like someone mentioned you have to be qualified for the surgery - no stigmatisms or such, and you can't be too young where your eyes are still getting worse. Sure there is an almost negligible chance of something going wrong, but so is driving your car to the quik-e-mart. Take the plunge and you'll be glad you did.

One of my best friends got it done, he went from being near blind to having to use reading glasses only to rest his vision. Pretty cool stuff, his eyesight was on the healing process for a couple weeks, but there was no real downtime. My mom is waiting in line to get hers done...
I'm just glad I don't have to wear glasses, perfect 20/20 ;) |

But actually I know someone who had it done, and said it was well worth it. He said the only "gnarly" part was that your eyeball is held open and this laser beam shoots into your iris. I can only imagine that must suck. But its not supposed to take very long I do believe. If you do it, GOOD LUCK! I hear your balls get bigger after you have it done. not your eyeballs hehe |

![]() I was thinking of doing it soon...
Contacts are good enough for now... Let them develop it a bit more before you go under the "knife" ;) I know some people that are loving it... Go to Vancouver @ Lasik they are the best. But if you are pressed for time there are some guys down the street that do it for $20 with a keychain laser... dunno how good it is though. |

Although corrective eye surgery (in theory) is not a life threatening procedure any elective surgery is dangerous. I recall (it has been alot of years ago) when the nurses went on strike in L.A. The surgeons stopped doing elective surgery during that period of time and the death rate in the county went down by a significant percentage.

I didn't read much of the thread so sorry if its redundant...
But these are some of the things I've heard about it...I'm also looking to get it done. I heard that after the surgery is done it can take up to like 3 - 4 months for your vision to actually correct...like your vision is constantly ironing itself out for a few weeks or months afterwards. The girl I knew who had it done complained of frequent headaches during this time. She also went to British Columbia somewhere to get it done...apparently it was cheaper...I dunno if she skimped on a doctor or if she just found the rates to be lower there...Don't go to mexico though. Its not permanent...remember when you were a kid and your eyes were growing, if you were like me you got your glasses and they'd slowly turn to shit and you have to go get a stronger perscription, which would eventually turn to shit and so on. Now as you've gotten older its kinda leveled out. Well I hear its not permanent and it'll only last a few years...like maybe 10 if you're lucky...and you vision will slowly start to degrade again. Although I also heard that for much of that time your vision is better than 20/20...so that's cool...kinda like a mild super power er sumpthin. The girl I know who had it done said she was stoked on it. She said the initial downtime was minimal although I'd see her wearing sunglasses indoors alot after the surgery so light sensitivity may have been high. I'm curious about what staring at a monitor 40 hours a week tosses into the equation?

Yeah, my mum had laser eye surgery... It worked perfectly... Sometimes, I try putting her glasses on, one lens is like glass, the other one is thicker then my dick.

Amp, my friend... I would HIGHLY recommend it..
I had it done two years ago, and my vision is still perfect. It was perfect the moment I walked away from the operating room. There was one day of immense pain, but that's only because my vision was so horrid; Now, it's so wonderful. I would recommend going to Canada to do it, as it's half the price of the US, generally speaking.. |

no, I didn't get it... the doctor I went to told me that because of the severity of my astigmatism, it was about a 50/50 shot that it would help at all. So I pretty much resigned myself to wearing glasses for the rest of my days.

![]() I had it done May 2002, overall everything went well but I was at 20/40 in one eye and 20/50 on the other so I decided to have enhancements done Oct 2002 and within 2-3 week I was 20/20 both eyes and still am. Paid $1200 and eye and it was worth every penny! Trust me its a piece of cake.

I had it done in 2000. One of the best things I have ever done. I highly reccomend it. BUT, do not fall for the tv ads, you get what you pay for. Talk to people, shop around. You only have one set of eyes.
I still have some vison issues at night driving, but I had those with contacts as well.

A close friend of mine had it done and now has 20/20 vision. He said the surgery lasted about 10 minutes... but what was weird is that he was pretty much blind for a few hours afterwards. His vision was blurry (the doctor said that's normal). So anyway, he went to sleep and woke up around 3am and noticed he had crystal clear vision. He is thrilled with the outcome.

Definately worth it! Had it done about 1 1/2 year ago, and am still as happy as the first day. And it's done so fast it's incredible...
But one thing you must never forget, go with a great surgeon. Do not fall for those cheap places, your sight is worth much more than a few hundred bucks...

I had RK done back in 1995 on my left eye prior to the surgery my vision was about 20/200!!!
Now I can see between 20/30 - 2/40 which is a major difference. I will be getting my other eye done by laser in the near future. Do your research, go for quality and not the lowest price!! Good luck |

Not everyone is an ideal candidate for the surgery and some unscrupulous docs will perform the procedure on any guy who walks in the door with a fat cheque. THOSE are the people who have night vision problems etc.
Don't choose your surgeon based on price, see more than one surgeon to check them out, and go for all of your follow-up appointments and be diligent with all of the follow-up procedures. I guarantee it'll be the best thing you ever did for yourself. |

I had both eyes done at the same time 5 years ago. Was 20/200 in both eyes before. Now my eyes are 20/20 and 20/15 (fyi 20/20 is 'average' vision not 'perfect' vision)
I have since talked 5 people into getting it done and they are all very happy as am I. My operation was 4500$ CAD 5 years ago, took about 15 mins. My friends had theirs done 2 years ago in montreal, total cost for both eyes $1500 Canadian. They had it done in the morning and were back to work that same afternoon. Sooner you get it done the better imho |

I had Lasik done a few years ago. I went from extremely nearsighted to not wearing any glasses (not completely 20-20 but good enough).
The whole operation takes 5 minutes. There is some discomfort but no serious pain. $5,000 sounds awfully high. Mine was $4,000 several years ago and prices have gone down since then.

How many dioptres (or whatever you you call it in English)?
If you have around 10-12 (minus or plus), try it with ONE eye only! If you have less, forget it! I was going to do it, i asked a professor of ophtalmology and he told me that. Besides i am MD and i have seen many fuck ups too... |

One of my friends had it done and with one of the best doctors around. She is now blind as a bat at night and can't even drive at night. That is a side effect that is possible which is why I've never had it done.

I know 4 people that got that eye surgery in COLOMBIA south america, it cost 600$ for both eyes, two of them had it 10 years ago and they both see fine. Those docs there are trained by Spanish doctors, I would get it here!
