I can't believe the fucker resigned!
The headline in our local town newspaper today reads:
"City Manager Resigns Over Salary" Get this - our tiny town of 48k pays a 'city manager' $108,000 a year in salary...and the dumbass resigns because "its not enough." In a town that has basically fallen apart economically in the past few years because of major losses in the industrial sector, the only employment opportunities left these days are barely subsistent, minimum wage behind-the-counter positions at Wendy's or Burger King. And this clod is bitchin' about only getting a $108k salary. Cracks me up... |

I would quit too if I was him. That's not a lot of pay for a city manager.

48K is tiny?
My whole COUNTY is only 17K. By the way $108K is about what the store manager at the local wal-mart ges paid. |

Austin is over 1M in population and I wouldn't consider it a massive city. Going by that rationale, the mayor of NYC should be making around $5B (as in five billion dollars) per year...

I'm not talking about what the guy SHOULD be paid. I'm just saying 48K is NOT a "tiny town" by anyone's standards. 48K is a decent sized city. Also is talking about city popualtion or the entire MSA because that a huge difference. |

I live in a county with 14,400 people. The county manager made about 43k a year and was happy as hell. this was in florida.

He doesn't wanna work for 100k a year. What's the problem? 100k isn't a lot to some people.

But if true, I'm sure they can afford to pay store manager's plump salaries because: In 2001, the last year for which Wal-Mart has released figures for most occupations, sales associates, the most common job in Wal-Mart, earned on average $8.23 an hour for annual wages of $13,861.The 2001 poverty line for a family of three was $14,630. (Is Wal-Mart Too Powerful?;, Business Week, 10/6/03 and US Dept of Health and Human Services 2001 Poverty Guidelines, 2001) |

In a addition to their regular salaries wal-mart managers also get quarterly bonus of $5K when they had payroll below a certain #. So often times mangers would cut hours the people actually doing the hard work so he/she could get their bonus. Then bitch when thing weren't done. Hmmm wonder why? |

Its not all entirely based on capita, of course - but I'm sure it plays a factor. My point is it must be difficult for so many people in town who have recently lost jobs due to major manufacturing companies relocating...and being forced to work menial-wage jobs in efforts to make ends meet. Not long ago the town lost its #1 manufacturing employer (Atlas Metals) and since then has lost at least a half dozen other major employers in the area. The loss of these companies is partially blamed on the ineptness of local politicians and mismanagement on the part of the city itself. Yet here we have a city manager complainin' he's only making a $108k salary in the face of all this. No doubt he's not going to hear a lot of sympathy from many folks in the area. |
