KRL, I don't think anyone doubts they are out there. All one has to do is look at some of the silly prices paid for domains over the last 2 years to know they are out there. However, if you add up every 50k and above domain purchase and compare it to the number of people that think their domains are worth 50k it's like trying to find a specific grain of sand on a beach.

I agree.

The question is not: are there alot of naysayers on GFY?

The questions are: Is there an innovative porn company with deep pockets that has coed content or who wants to market a new coed site? Would the theme of 'California Coeds' appeal to alot of web surfers? Is "California Coeds" a catchy name? Are there a lot of colleges in California with gorgeous scenery for shooting killer content? Are there a TON of gorgeous coeds on those campuses? etc..

Heck, the more I think about this, "mid five figures" seems too cheap.

If he was selling it, it's worth at least $100k. But if you're selling it to him it's worth $15.

I'm just saying Donny, its about perspective. And there is such a vast worldwide ocean of domain buyers now that you get quite a lot of perspective varieties.

I've seen sales on domains that I wouldn't even pay reg fees for go for hard to imagine amounts. You have to wonder what the heck the buyer is thinking at times. But to each his own seems to be the rule.

One thing I've learned is never doubt the possibility. And that has been a pleasant surprise fortunately.

Exactly! If high end buyers were a dime a dozen there wouldn't be a need for brokers to go out and do the job they do.

Its a lot of fucking work. You can end up spinning wheels and a lot of time with dozens of prospects to get to that 1 buyer that will actually close a deal successfully with you or your client.

I have one top one word domain I'm working on a deal with for a client that is in the 7 figure range. It's taken months upon months to find a buyer and I had to snag the singular version as part of the deal which presented an additional challenge. So finding 7 figure buyers is truly like the pic you posted Chad. A needle in a haystack, but if you look through enough grains of sand, you'll eventually find the one.

Nah, it just comes down to business.

Does this domain provided an opportunity to make some good money? Does the buyer see the opportunity? How much money can it make? At what cost?

It's very simple actually.

The domain does not provide the opportunity to make a damn thing, the end user does. You aren't talking about a top tier domain name here.

Exactly. This domain must be branded, like any other. I doubt more than a handful of people ever type that domain into their browser.

And let's take a look at some sites that make a lot of money, yet have shitty domains:

karupspc.com
karupsha.com
amkingdom.com

All three of those do more than 7 figures per year in sales, yet the domains themselves suck. It's about branding, not the domain.

Yahoo? Google? Huh?

So why spend money on that CaliforniaCoeds domain when you'll just have to turn around and brand it anyway.

Womenfuckingbigcocks.com
Womenwithbigclits.com
Nakedwomenwithbigtits.com

and so on...

I have them all, I admit that they are not worth a lot. But they are good looking domains. And get searches every day. Much more targeted too!

Good luck with the sale, California Coeds is a nice domain!

If you someone wants to buy mine, just ask ;=)))

When I was a kid you could buy a brand new car for $3k and a nice house for $20K.

One day they'll be saying that about Internet properties too.

That's the point.

karupsha.com
amkingdom.com

All three of those do more than 7 figures per year in sales, yet the domains themselves suck. It's about branding, not the domain.

Shitty domains? No argument.

However, their domain IS their brand. They are the same.

And, they make alot of money. But, so what? The point is NOT: can you still make alot of money despite crappy marketing?

The point is: how far can good marketing take you?

The argument that only domains with type-in traffic have big value is very 1998. That low hanging fruit was picked long ago.

You know this as well as anybody.

These above examples are valuable for different reasons.

Men.com is short and has traffic. But what to sell there? With all due respect to my friend KRL, that is still somewhat up in the air.

CaliforniaCoeds.com is longer and has no built-in traffic. But there is no doubt about what to sell there!

And, the roughly 30X price difference is a powerful equalizer; it is no small amount.

This thread is approaching 1000 views so at least it's branded the domain for the webmasters.

You could start an affiliate program on it now.

Its a challenge to find them no doubt, and they are far and few between, but they are out there.

"Not price conscious" doesn't mean to suggest profligate or foolish, the possible implication of a few of the replies to this above good observation by KRL.

It just means that the buyers have money and don't need to limit themselves to $50 bargains.

It takes some balls and experience to buy a domain like this for mid five figures. But these people are out there. Someone with a good idea for CaliforniaCoeds.com, some good content, and the ability to execute... will snap it up pretty fast, and be smiling.

CaliforniaCoeds.com is a great name.

Based on todays value and cash. Some of the overpaid will deffinatly be bargains in a few years. So if whomever does not mind holding them that long then sure. Otherwise I would take many of the overpaid amounts and look for todays bargins. I am positive the todays bargins will then turn into "lucky son of a bitch" prices in a few years.

I may have missed this, but if I haven't:

are you ever going to say what the reserve is?

I never bid on an auction with a reserve.

From the eBay auction page:

"In fairness to all bidders, the reserve will not be disclosed outside the auction. So, please do NOT send private inquiries to the seller asking about the reserve. It will not be disclosed. However, to address this in a roundabout manner: the reserve is set in the ballpark of what a "nice" new car would cost --not a Mercedes, but not a Neon either."

I have always wondered about the thought process behind these statements. I mean, it is not like someone can win the auction by bidding less than the reserve so how is it unfair to tell someone the reserve. In "real" auctions they tell you what the reserve price is. It is usually the opening bid, but for some reason some eBay sellers like to tease people by having an undisclosed reserve.

Tell me Daddy-O, what do you think is fair/unfair when it comes to reserve prices.
