Ever heard of Oskar Schindler?
Before Spielberg made the Oscar-winning "Schindler's List" in 1993, not too many people in the world had heard of him -- except of course for the 1,200 refugees he saved from slaughter in the concentration camp, and their children, and their children's children.
It's quite the true story: http://www.oskarschindler.com/ It's also quite the film. I think what I appreciated most about the film was that it presented an image of heroism and courage under fire so much more relatable to common, work-a-day folk than the grandly polarized white-hat/black-hat stories that usually come out of Hollywood. As in life, the picture you see of the truth is ifnfluenced by who YOU are and by what perspective WHO you are brings on the facts. Schindler was a Nazi -- one of them. Or, at least he chose to carry the card for whatever reasons of his own -- business, personal, etc. But, at some point what he decided was "evil" became unberable. He was motivated by conscience and the pursuit of right. You would think, if he had been brought in to some Unter-Fuhrer's office for questioning on his activities that he would have lied or otherwise concealed the truth. But, FOOL, he did not. Such is the nature of "morality" -- when you are infected by it, you think all men must hear reason and that all reasonbale men will acknowledge what is right. But who can say. It may or may not matter to you that Nazi Germany fell soon after all this happened and that Hitler has been "distinguished" as one of the most abhorrent persons to ever walk the earth. It may be that, for all our striving to comprehend the nature of ourselves, and for all the comfort of believing in an absolute morality... that there simply isn't one. History is written by the winners, as they say... Schindler - saved roughly 1100
Sugihara - saved roughly 6000 We've all heard of Schindler, but who has heard of Sugihara. He was equally as important to saving Jews from the Germans. Yet why was he not remembered or honored in the same way? http://www.eagleman.com/sugihara/ |

I enjoyed watching Schindler's List because despite the subject, it was after all, an entertaining, feel-good movie. I suppose you could argue that serious movies about serious events would mean far fewer people being exposed to them at all, but does it serve anything except the box office to give us such a distorted view of reality?
We are kidding ourselves if we take comfort from such movies. The number of Oskar Schindlers and the numbers saved by them were tiny. Hollywood also likes make bad things the products of evil men, when in truth the Holocaust was only possible because of the flaws in ordinary people. Just how flawed is clear if you consider that even something on the scale of the Holocaust had insufficient impact on us to prevent the more recent tragedies in the Balkans, Africa and of course, Israel. |

I liked the movie... but remember; facts and how they are portrayed in a movie are 2 different things.

I have the CD soundtrack of that film. Everytime I hear the cello playing it puts me in a melancholic mood.

A very powerful scene for me:
Oskar Schindler: I could have got more out. I could have got more. I don't know. If I'd just... I could have got more. Itzhak Stern: Oskar, there are eleven hundred people who are alive because of you. Look at them. Oskar Schindler: If I'd made more money... I threw away so much money. You have no idea. If I'd just... Itzhak Stern: There will be generations because of what you did. Oskar Schindler: I didn't do enough! Itzhak Stern: You did so much. [Schindler looks at his car] Oskar Schindler: This car. Goeth would have bought this car. Why did I keep the car? Ten people right there. Ten people. Ten more people. [removing Nazi pin from lapel] Oskar Schindler: This pin. Two people. This is gold. Two more people. He would have given me two for it, at least one. One more person. A person, Stern. For this. [sobbing] Oskar Schindler: I could have gotten one more person... and I didn't! And I... I didn't! |
