He's getting older...he isn't the young guy he was the first time they were big stars but still needs to come off as 'alternative'. The look worked for Robert Smith..atleast he know the lipstick wouldn't work for him. Regardless, I think American Idiot is an excellent album and the makeup just makes him eye candy for some of us ;) |

They make great POP songs. They have nothing to do with punk. As a matter of fact, his spreading of the Emo gospel in the 21st century is as far from the punk sensibility as anything I've ever seen.

It is perfect Punk Pop. I am a punk chick that likes old punk best but I will tip my hat when somebody gets their product right. It is not punk as I would classify it (though when they used to tour with Pansy Division they were much more punk but then hey the Bangles used to be a punk group too) but they do have it in their roots. A hell of a lot more than fucking Avril, anyway. Emo I blame on Weezer. |

Green Day is a cool band.. He has always done the makeup thing as far as I can tell.. Its just kinda one of his trademarks.. As far as punk or pop they are a band that has "sold-out" to success but still has some strong punk roots. Do not tell me you would stay true to "punk' and make no money when you can "pop" it up a little and be on top of the charts.

I don't blame them for it. Hell, it sells and some of the songs will be considered classic in 10 years so who can say they are wrong. Girls love them.
But, you can no longer call them punk. Punk is more than just a sound (which they no longer have)... it's the style, the sensibility, the general fuck you attitude that goes with it. You have to get the feeling that you the star may not bitch up and hide under the table in a bar fight. I have met these guys personally. Spent a good amount of time with them actually. They are NOT punk in any sense of the word. They are pop.

There's nothing to debate. Here's a simple example that is exactly the same thing... Mariah Carey has some hip hop based beats, does that make her a rapper... or even hip hop? No. She's undoubtedly pop.
So are they.

Oh please..I love the Clash but they gave birth to punk-pop. My husband who was a London punk in the 70's used to always tell me about how at the time there was a big group in the scene that didn't even think the Clash were punk but pop instead. My husband was one of them and would growl every time I played the Clash but that was his problem because I was never going to avoid playing them. If you listen to modern 'punk' you can hear the bands that followed the example of the Clash and those that followed the Pistols and and that branch of the punk rock family tree. So, even at its birth there wasn't just one punk sound. Greenday are more political than just about any band out there at the moment (out there meaning known because yes there are pleanty of political bands nobody hears outside of gigs) and punk has ALWAYS been political. From the Pistols to the Clash it was about politics from the start. It is also about rattling establishment cages. American Idiot (the album) does that and even way back with Dookie it drove my teachers nuts when they figured out we were singing about jerking off. To me punk is an attitude and comes in various strengths. Remember the Clash (who again, I love) did Rock The Casbah which is as pop as you get and every housewife lists as their favorite punk song. The problem to my musical tastes comes from all the wannabe Greendays that can't even tune their instruments that think they can do what Greenday makes look easy. |

I like Lydon but he does some seriously 'un punk' things these days over here if you are going to insist on having his 70's persona as your guide. That said, I enjoy it every time he slams Mclaren. |

Simple fact...Greenday don't exist in 1970's Britian which is what old punk (which is my faveorite) was largely trying to shake the roots of. It is nearly 30 years on (I am a 1976 baby..always feel I was born in the year of the punk for a reason) and things are not going to be exactly the same. If it was then they wouldn't have done their job very well. Greenday do what they do for a 2006 American audience.
Of course this is probably where we start to argue about the value of Sid Vicious and if he was actually ever plugged in or not. Oh and who wore makeup. |

Heh, true but he's still adheres to the overall punk "mythos" more than Billie Joe. Hell, he's in his 50's for chrissakes!
I'm just 'taking the piss' Sarah. Greenday might as well be the sons of The Buzzcocks. There were many branches of punk. The later generations of Punk rockers either followed The Sex Pistols with their anarchist lyrics, The Clash with their sociopolitical lean or The Buzzcocks with their prettier looks and obvious singles. The resemblance is obvious. But, as far as the what is punk debate goes, history loves rebels so The Clash and The Sex Pistols get priority when it comes to defining what is punk.

Well anyone that starts something is the the mark by which all are judged (though that leads onto the debate that the New York Dolls invented punk anyway but lets not go there). As far as being the sons of the Buzzcocks that might be why I like them as I more or less consider the Buzzcocks to be perfect music. It is where punk met melody and people that could play. It does make me laugh when people think it is an insult to throw 'gay' around in punk circles. Hell sexual radars were all over the place in early punk and it was part of what made it so great and so scary for some at the same time. The Buzzcocks are coming to London in april and I sort of want to see them because they are one of my all time faveorite bands but I don't know if they are any good live these days and I wouldn't want to go away disapointed. |

I just like that at the resturant they have in Oakland they have 'the Specials' specials. Which perhaps shows their infulences goes a bit beyond 70's punks and a bit into the start of london SKA. You can't really hear it in their sound but you can in the way their politics are displayed in a listenable package.
It must have been such a rich time for music in London it makes me a bit sad sometime that I missed it. |

agreed, greenday is what my daughters call emo.
Punk was a movement, a rebellion to the times and status of the common man. Today all "punk" rebels against is itself. I will say I do admire greendays ethics tho, to stand against authority and G Dubya and make a statement to todays youth that have NO idea what the world and consequences are says alot about their views. |

That's hard to say. They are old and out of shape. It might kill the whole aura of the music to see them in this state... unless you were in your 50's too.

What a bunch of fucking haters on this board (big suprise). Point is that they are successful at what they do, more than you can say for about 95% of the people who post on here.
If you don't like them, don't listen to them, I am sure they could give two fucks about what a bunch of porn pushing, fan sign requesting, social rejects think. |

London is and always has been rich musically. Sometimes their trends cross the pond, sometimes it doesn't but London always has it's own thing going on that's usually pretty interesting.
In the last 20 years... we've seen some very cool New Wave, most of the biggest dance tunes, the whole electronic music scene from Massive Attack to Zero 7 and, unfortunately, a huge amount of cheesy pop hits. Not to mention the rock scene is thriving over there. Rock bands coming out of the US these days are real pussies. I don't see many real Rock stars here now. I see guys singing over chords and drums but not many stars. Jack White was the last one to break out recently. But the UK is staying true to the spirit for the most part. It's a great place to be.

The White Stripes played their first UK gig at the 100 Club in London (which I used to work next to). If you know your punk you know why that gave them 'cred'. They were much bigger here before they hit the States. |
