There were many branches of punk. The later generations of Punk rockers either followed The Sex Pistols with their anarchist lyrics, The Clash with their sociopolitical lean or The Buzzcocks with their prettier looks and obvious singles.
The resemblance is obvious.
But, as far as the what is punk debate goes, history loves rebels so The Clash and The Sex Pistols get priority when it comes to defining what is punk.
