London is and always has been rich musically. Sometimes their trends cross the pond, sometimes it doesn't but London always has it's own thing going on that's usually pretty interesting.
In the last 20 years... we've seen some very cool New Wave, most of the biggest dance tunes, the whole electronic music scene from Massive Attack to Zero 7 and, unfortunately, a huge amount of cheesy pop hits.
Not to mention the rock scene is thriving over there. Rock bands coming out of the US these days are real pussies. I don't see many real Rock stars here now. I see guys singing over chords and drums but not many stars. Jack White was the last one to break out recently. But the UK is staying true to the spirit for the most part. It's a great place to be.

The White Stripes played their first UK gig at the 100 Club in London (which I used to work next to). If you know your punk you know why that gave them 'cred'. They were much bigger here before they hit the States.
