Impeachment is in the Air: New Polls Show Majority Favors Impeachment

The impeachment movement has hit the new year running. If you consider the following facts, it's clear that the issue of impeachment has decisively taken off:

1) The People's Impeachment Lobby is a huge success. Members of Congress received more than 70,000 letters urging impeachment.

2) A new Zogby poll will be released tomorrow showing that by a 52% to 43% margin, Americans believe that Congress should consider impeaching George W. Bush if he wiretapped the people of this country without court approval (and everyone knows and Bush has admitted that he ordered just such huge secret spying operation.) The poll, with a plus or minus margin of error of 2.9%, shows that 66% of Democrats, 59% of independents, and 23% of Republicans support impeachment for wiretapping. Majorities favored impeachment across the country: the East (54%), South (53%), and West (52%), Central states (50%). The significance of this poll can be seen by way of comparison with public attitudes in the months before the impeachment of Clinton. In August and September 1998, sixteen major polls found that only 36% supported hearings to impeach Clinton.

3) Even Republican Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman, Arlen Specter, who will be convening hearings next month on Bush?s authorization of secret electronic surveillance of Americans, said that if lawmakers find Bush violated the law regarding wiretapping (remember Richard Nixon here), then ?impeachment is a remedy. After impeachment you could have a criminal prosecution."

4) There are now eight members of Congress including John Conyers, the ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, who have put their name to a bill calling for a special committee to investigate impeachable crimes by the Bush Administration.

5) Newspaper Ads in the New York Times and other papers will be published again, as well as radio spots in the next few weeks, coinciding with the Bush State of the Union Address and the Congressional hearings on Bush?s illegal wiretapping operation. These ads have reached hundreds of thousands of people and we are planning to run more in the next few weeks. Please help with your contribution.

As a libertarian you should be outraged by Bush's warrantless tapping of US citizens w/out court approval, the scope of the spying and the mechanisms it puts in place. How long till the definition of 'terrorist' is expanded to anyone they don't like? This type of behavior needs some kind of oversight rather than usurping the seperation of powers.

On wire-tapping... why all the fuss? It is well-known there is extensive electronic surveillance within the US and certainly nothing new.

Has nobody ever noticed the various comments over the last decade from telecom companies based in the US where they had "issues" with the Federal goverment concerning "facilities"??

The last one I happened to see was the CEO of a Florida-based telcom corp complaining about the further increasing costs they were expected to cover in providing free additional facilities for phone tapping and the total bill was eating into their shareholders dividends. BTW this was before 9/11.

But I'm sure the electronic surveillance was just for "external" purposes and they would never dream of offending any US citizen by actually spying on them.

Racist organizations have recently been redefined as "homeland terrorists," and there is a push by the Jewish to label the anti-semantic as terrorists also.

These groups may not share mainstream America beliefs, but they are not terrorists. They are exercising their rights as American's to believe and say what they want.

The real concern here is that the government is taking the initial steps to outlaw certain types of radical beliefs, and they are starting with the worse of the worse as to ease people into it so that nobody questions them along the way.

Why not educate yourself before making such statements.

Johnson didn't do shit. Clinton and Carter signed orders pertaining to illegal aliens living in the USA. Dubya spied on US citizens, which are protected by the constitution. Unless they were already spying then how would they know that keywords were being mentioned in the phone calls?

That being said, there is still some issue on its legality. He may have acted in a totally legal manner whether I like it or not.

There will be no impeachment this year. Some of those that are up for reelection will make noise but it won?t happen. Most of the news media is controlled by the administration right now and people listen to it blindly with out checking facts. Dubya?s rating would have to fall below 35% for him to be impeached.

Also bombs will fall in Iran this summer. A good war always helps get voters to the polls and makes them forget about other things.

There will be false alarm soon to distract voters.

If things still go sour there will need to be an actual attempt foiled on US soil.

Think about the impeachment process. Lets say he is found guilty and steps down. Then guess who gets the job. Imagine Halliburton replacing the IRS, Army Corps of Engineers and managing the nations oil reserves.

The government is run by what is on paper not by whom is elected for a measly 4 year term. I would be interested in seeing someone create a thread highlighting all the wonderful things that have been accomplished by the President and his team since 2000. We always see the negative here, but none of the supporters really show much of a positive outlook. Instead it's always " oh yeah ? Well Dems are bad too, here's why ... blah blah ". Let's see what great things have been accomplished so far.

This nonsense is simply an attempt by a bunch of democrats that can't win elections or put forth a decent presidential candidate to get rid of Bush. They and the moronic left just can't accept the fact the American people consistenly reject a party devoid of ideas or a plan to deal with serious issues like terrorism.

Constant repetition of "BUSH SUCKS" without an alternative solution has proven to be a losing strategy....
