Everyone in the hotel is there as part of the business. Things are concentrated and focused. If you sit in one place in the lobby for 4 hours EVERYONE you want to talk to will wander by you at some point.

There are far fewer outside distractions that pull people away, and scatter them throughout the city.

We are welcomed by the hotel, and not made to feel unwanted, or as a freak show.

The costs overall are far less, and therefore everyone's ROI is much better. It also means that the smaller webmasters can afford ot attend, and they are a vital part of the industry.

The overall experience is much less stressful, less hectic, and less chaotic. This keeps people a little more relaxed and is a better enviroment for productive meetings and discussions.

These are just a few thoughts that come across my mind at first in reaction to this years vegas show. If AVN is truly serious about making some real changes, I may change my initial reaction of "never again", and re-examine the Vegas show.
hyper-valid points.

Might be a good idea to have the show at a hotel, casino away from the strip, one good place to look into is the Green Valley resort and casino, that way you know everybody will be there for the show, more networking, more business...

Miami works because even the "biggest players" are either on site full time, or at least a good chunk of the time. Vegas fails because you can spend 4 days in town and never see anyone higher than a sales rep.

It is the same reason that shows like Pheonix and Cybernet always do well - the right people, the actual PLAYERS are there and accessable, usually in a relaxed enough atmosphere, chatting not just about business but making relationships that build business for everyone.

There are millions of distractions 24 hours per day in Vegas. Miami is cool because people tend to eat late, party late, and usually are around between end of show and 7 or 8 for the cocktail parties or just hanging out. That really makes a big difference.

Accessibility and availablity of the people you really want to creates value. Find a way to make the players be part of the show (not just "in town") and things will grow.

If the AVN show is moved to March, I'll have to forget about it. No point in going to two shows in March. One can justify AVN in January and Phoenix Forum in March, but it's a bit of a stretch doing two in the same month.

This year's show was very badly signed. I followed an "Internext Registration" sign, and then, inside, the signs switched the AEE or AVN something or other. I never saw another Internext sign once I got into that back-end with the multiple stair cases leading to the registration area.

I forgot all about the seminars. Again, I never saw a single sign.

Why do you need two registration areas? One for Internext and one for the AEE or whatever you called it. Again, it was confusing and the Internext registration signs were hard to see. We, of course, ended up in the wrong line.

Once I actually got into the lube and dildo show, I didn't realize there was anything upstairs. So I left thinking, "This was pretty lame." Found out later there was another whole section upstairs, which required another trip the next day.

Thanks for putting the gay section at the back of hall. Why not put Jenna back there so the throngs aren't clogging up the front of the hall. I had to hassle my way all the way to the back through all the fans wanting their pictures taken with the stars all way the through. What a pain. Seems like AVN always ghettoizes the gay section in some inconvenient way.

Why don't you make the registration more economical for independent webmasters to go the show?

BTW, hasn't the Westin chain gone non-smoking? Isn't that going to be fun ... a porn conference in a non-smoking hotel. Can I be the first to request booth space outside the front doors of the hotel in the driveway, I'll supply the ashtrays.

Cheers
Michael

NO matter when or where Internext is, someone will not be happy. I don't think I would go to it if I had to choose between Internext and the Phoenix Forum in the same month~

I agree with a lot of what has been said. This year was far too expensive for what I got out of it. The Venetian is nice but a hell of a lot of money for a place to sleep, fuck and shower. When there is a big convention in Las Vegas the direct flights get scarce and expensive, so unless you book 6 months in advance either you are paying first class prices for a coach seat next to the toilet or you have to go through Chicago to get from Las Vegas to Denver.

There is a lot to be said about taking over an entire hotel, or at least most of it. Not very likely in a 4000 room hotel, but there are definitely hotels both on and off the strip that are new, nice and could handle the event. AND won't start at $400 a night for a standard room.

my suggestions?
(1) don't compete with other shows
(2) make the benefits of the show worth the cost of going--so keep the costs down--hotel, badges, and flights. AVN may not be able to directly control hotel and flight costs, but the timing and location of the event ARE in your control, so consider what else is going on and how much the regular attendees who monitor their expenses need to pay for rooms and flights.
(3) make it easy to find the registration, the show floor, and the seminars.
(4) make sure that the seminar room is suitable for a seminar--not a "room" made by hanging curtains around folding chairs.
(5) Ask for input from people that have attended the shows in the past. Listen to them. We are your target market--if we don't think it is worth going, there are plenty of other opportunities during the year. Competition improves the breed.

Forget weeks..how ahout the past few years...I've voiced my concerns as other people I know have which gets as far as Missy (whatever happened to her?) or Teri and they both listen and I know they're only the messengers so trying to reach Renee the "show manager" directly was impossible. Apparently you have to have a booth bigger then a 20x20 plus banners and sponsorships to get to talk to her. Now that this show was a "ghost town", she's attempting to save face and appear like she wants to help us..right more like she's looking at her own dwindling pocket book and trying to figure out how to escape an inevitable implosion.

I mainly focus on event logistics etc.

I appreciate all your comments regarding the past, present and future of Internext. As for AVN not caring. I assure you we care but in all honesty, I can see how you would feel marginalized. We are a large company (for this industry), we could use improvements in the area of customer service/client relations, we have an almost non existant board presence, we have other events that compete for attention, we have sales reps that seem to turn over frequently.....we are far from perfect.

The entire summer show format came out of the need for change and us trying to get a handle on the changing needs of our clients. I also would like to see that sort of change with the winter event.
For a large company in the industry, you have the most unbelievable amount of turnover I've ever experienced. Half of your staff are no longer there as well as many other departments. Maybe you all need to examine how to keep your employees first before you even think about attempting to keep your clients. If your company truly cared...your employees would stay there then I won't have to deal with figuring out who the new person replaced so and so is and trying to establish a relationship with them.

You should have joined us afterwards when everyone cleared out. We did nothing but eat, drink and gamble (and window shop...every store I looked at I was thinking "I can buy that cheaper on the internet ).
