need expensive hosting... like 10$a gig
spam me with your top hosts. the more expensive the better.
(sorry zaha - had to poke fun) not all hosts are created equal. if your site goes down and you need to physically reboot your machine will a tech be on call to do it... will the hosting company even contact you if your site is off line? or will you be on vacataion for a week only to return and find out your site has been down for 3 days. OUCH. Good support is critical. once you develop a list of companies that can provide you with the service level you want ... then work on price. Bad move to work backwards from price to a "suitable" company .. you might wind up settling for some one that is sub par. |

Good point Brett...you cannot sell on price alone, hosting is not a commodity. You might as well ask that you want to be spammed for offers for cars under $1,000. Sure, its a cheap car, but how would it look next to Lensmans Mercedes SUV, or his Vette, or his Prowler, or whatever car he bought today ;)
There are costs associated with hosts, you need to pay for the hardware, the bandwith, the salaries of the tech support(you really want a host that offers cheap service, but pays their techs less that the counter guys at Arbys???) You want a host? I can host you from home on my DSL line for under $1 a gig

I agree with all the above, Quality costs money, but I was looking at colo for a couple of boxes in Minneapolis about 6 months ago and I found these guys below. This is fucken unbelievable, $20 a gig the first 10gig and $30 dollar overage for everything over. It looks like they came to there sences and lowered there prices because at the time I was looking it was $40 a gig overage... Oh and better yet, they claim to be a Porn-Free Network.

Yea...saw that too...
you didn't read the part in their TOS where the tuck your server in to bed at 9PM, and read it a bedtime story? or the 3 servers per data center max part? j/k

What you're saying about price is true to a degree, however...
To use the car analogy, say I want to buy a Vette, and the Chevy dealer in New Orleans wants 30K for it, but I go to the dealer in Baton Rouge and he offers it to me for 27K, same car, different dealer. Am I getting a better Vette in New Orleans because it costs more? Or am I being smart with my $$ by buying the exact same thing for less somewhere else? More expensive doesn't always mean higher quality. However, service, uptime, etc are all important factors to consider when choosing a host.

Sure, couldn't agree more. I think that we are on the same page here...quality deserves a fair price, and there are also benefits to poor hosting, such as a low price When you compare 50 cents a gig to $2 per gig, we are not talking about corvettes here. We are talking about different cars. It is just surprising how many people jump into the "bargain hosting", while somewhat established webmasters know that there is more to a host than price. Sure, price makes a difference, you need to make $, your not just doing this for the customers health. A lot of things make a difference. You need to find the best service and value within the "tier" of provider that you need. Some projects are suited for cheap hosting, others that need to be up 24-7 and babysat. Some sites have a kickass technical webmaster who just needs the box to get plugged in. Others need to be walked through how to FTP to a site. I am going to the extremes to ilustrate the point. Like much in life, the answer is, it depends I have quit beating this dead horse

Wired, you're in Minneapolis? Cool.
Our main "datacenter" is still located here, we are in the process of a move to chicago though. There is NOTHING for even close to competetive bandwidth in this city. If you still need local (or possibly remote) co-lo let me know, we will retain space up here as well, and will eventually just expand our network into the city to provide chicago-like pricing (and reliability). It's a shame this city is so bandwidth-neglected. We need like 100Mbit/sec of commitment to bring in a decent provider, which is a hell of a lot for us. -Phil |

Yeah. I'm in a position to be able to afford cheap bandwidth. I'm paged within 2 minutes of a server failure, by my own monitoring software, and my uber-cheap network center (rachshack) does reboots (if they're ever required) for free within 5-10 minutes max (Actually, I timed the last one at 3 minutes).
All I need is to be plugged in, and my years of technical experience allow me to handle the rest. I don't reccommend this for those of you just getting started. Read about what you're buying, and if you need handholding (and a lot of people do) then BUY it. I *still* think, however, that it's usually better to buy your handholding independant of your ISP. Doing otherwise is like letting the fox in the henhouse.

I see all you guys talking about tech support and reboots, I got that automated a while back. You can do it yourself as fast as you can type a name and pass and then click a button. It is also independent of your server, so you can always access.
And, BTW, you guys talk about getting something for the extra money, my customers get this when they login: [Bandwidth Grapsh] [ Census data ] [ ICMP data ] [ Round Trip Times ] [ Alive Alone ] [ % pkts ] [ % pkts for good hosts ] [ % pkts total ] [ Processes ] [ Users ] [ cpu ] [ Memory ] [ Load ] [ Storage ] [ Percent Used ] [ CpuTemp ] [ CpuRotation ] [ CpuVoltage ] [ MainVoltage ] [ Mbufs ] [ Mbuf Clusters ] and yes. ...... [ THE REBOOT BUTTON] and one more thing, [ WatchDog Reboot Delay] That WatchDog, monitors you server and reboots it when it locks up. Kind of crafty huh? And bandwidth is priced at $.50/Gig including support. My god life is good when you host with us. [email protected] ICQ: 152811524 |

What if Watchdog fails?
We provide our customers with such tools too if they want, but we also have a team of technical people on standby if something happens. I also think that cheap hosts have different clients as more expensive hosts, so its not really competition. |

Well guess you dont run a mysql server or ever have issues where when the machine boots up it wants you to run fsck or something?
You dont necessarily want it to reboot the fucker just cause it is not reading httpd requests. |

It is a little more than just http failure then server reboot. The watchdog serves as a backup, that is x,y,z fails, then reboot after "x" time. You can also set it to just restart a certain app if that is all that fails. Ex, restart Apache if http fails for 5 minutes. Each line we add to the code makes it smarter.
We also have people on staff and they do get notified when things fail, but this is just an auto feature that some customers find useful. And truly, most things you can diagnose and then fix by pulling plugs or touching keyboards can be automated. It saves time, money, and frustration. |

Ya I totally understand your view. But my site is small and I have a lot of traffic which I can feed to my tgp if it were down for even 3 days. I really doesn't matter to me that much. I am looking for a low price so I can make as much of a profit possible which will be spent on traffic... Once I get a bit established then I will get more expensive hosting if the one that I will have now fails me. For now pimpshost looks to be my #1 choice. ![]() |
