There is going to be some great surfing this weekend. A rarity for the gulf.

I just hope that does not come on shore as a cat5 as it makes its way across the state. Hopefully we won't get the hurricane force winds here in the Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood area....

I am not sure we're going to have to evacuate in Tampa if it stays south.

The good thing is that the path it's on right now goes over the Everglades and there isn't much going on down there but gators.

Hey guys, I new here

I moved to Florida 2 months before Charlie hit last year and that was an experience. I think this hurricane is supposed to die down to a cat 3 before it hits land.

Check out the hurricane symbol in the center. I've never seen that before.
This is a whopper of a storm! If it's still a Cat 4 or 5 by tomorrow night I'm hitting the road.

That is the first time i can ever remember actually being able to see the hurricane symbol in the center as well.

Some other tidbits i have been reading that don't make me feel to good:

"It was also expected to move across the peninsula quickly, which means it wouldn't weaken much over land, Cobb said. That means it's possible Atlantic coast cities such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach could also be hit by winds nearly as strong as the west coast, he said.
The tightlly packed system, with hurricane-force winds extend only 15 miles out from the eye, was projected to accelerate toward Florida's Gulf Coast and strike near Naples by Saturday evening, potentially as a Category 4 with 145 mph winds after it weakens a bit."

Please let this girl get the cat 4 and 5 out of her system and hit florida at a much decreased rate.

The track has just shifted a bit farther North. Looks like it will go North of Lake Okeechobee now or over it. Wind speeds should be 70 to 90 on the East side of FL.

In the latest advisory one of the comp models says Wilma could threaten New England states as it glides up the US East Coast.

I think anyone from Naples to Tampa should make exist stage left plans right now.

Yeah it's progressively shifting North. After Naples/Ft. Meyers it could threated the Tampa Bay area.

After Katrina and Rita they did storm surge/flood prediction and a direct hit from a Cat 3 or higher would render St. Petersburg an island. Much of Downtown Tampa would be washed out.

Fingers crossed for some divine intervention.

Too bad that storm seeding isn't a viable answer.

However, Hurricanes are like garbage enemas, and stuctural Darwinism.

The thing that worries me the most about this storm is that it has a tiny eye. Last hurricane with such a small eye was Andrew.

Looks like we may take a almost direct hit here in Cancun, and this one is lower pressure than Gilbert that wiped out Cancun in 88...we are leaving tomorrow and hoping there will be something to come back to

One of them just can't leave as he owns a hotel that is used as a shelter during this kind of thing, so his job is to make sure people that can't leave at least have a place to go to try and weather it out. Also..the last time Cancun was actually hit was in 88, every year we have warnings, but after so many years of nothing, alot of the locals think these storms will just pass by like they usually do.

Not looking good. I'd evacuate ASAP and try to get out way ahead of it and not have to sit in traffic as it closes in. Just not worth the trouble of being there even if it is weaker at landfall. Plus power will go out and you will not be able to work. Grab the laptop and head out of town. Get a hotel room with maid service and kick back, have some fun and do a little work. Oh, and if they haven't shut down purchase fo federal flood insurance buy a policy real quick. http://www.fema.gov/nfipInsurance/search_results.jsp

What a tough situation your friend is in with the hotel. Yes, i understand your point when it comes to the 'local mindset' and being jaded after years of misses and close calls.
Best of luck to you and your loved ones.

Wilma has dropped a lot of rain here in Honduras, yesterday I put a bucket in the middle of the back yard and 16 hours later it had 7 inches of water, and that's just a few hours.
Lucky so far no major damage reported and the winds have not affected the main cities in the country. The Ports are closed though and so are all the schools.
Part that really sucks is business in my restaurants is down because everyone has been afraid to go out at night
But at least so far we are all safe and I sure would not want to be on the Yucatan right now. Good Luck Mexico, and good luck Florida

I know all about not being able to leave, first of all there is nowhere to really go in Honduras second my main restaurant is the center for International relief operations during crisis. Guess I ain't going nowhere.

Good luck at to your friend at the hotel. If you have a place to go, go, Gilbert tore that area up and Wilma is stronger and headed at ya.

Thanks....I just hate this crap. Before moving here, we did research and seriously, the last hurricane that did any real damage to Cancun, was Gilbert in 88, so we felt pretty good about moving to this place. It wasn't like Florida that gets hit every year, this place seemed safe. Cabo is looking better and better...I need to check out the hurricane situation on the pacific coast......

This is looking worse by the hour. People here are going to start freaking out in another day or two. I'm on my way to get a generator and supplies tonight.

Wish us luck. Even though we're on the North end of the projected path. I'm not far from the gulf, this will push a hell of a storm surge.

Hang in there At least we get warned before they hit.

If it drifts north Tampa will be screwed. I'd get out of there now. Surge in the bay could be well over 25 feet.

Shit....the way this looks, if it stays in the projected path, then the east side of the storm will whip around the bottom of Florida and smack right into Miami with the full strom surge of the "dirty" side.... :-(

There goes another boating weekend screwed
