Anyone know the answer to this?
The movie industry loses billions of dollars due to DVD Pirates, so why not the day it hits theaters make the DVD available in all stores?

				 | theaters would die out I'm sure. Why pay $10/person to watch a movie when you can go buy the DVD for $15-$20. |

				 | Escort, I belive that in just a few more years - mabey 1 or 2 decades at the most, there won't be movie theaters to speak of left. Everything will be instant, pay per view on demand, etc.

				 | I don't really believe that the movie industry is "losing" movie per say, but I would say that they are "losing out on money". Most people who buy the pirated $1 - $3 DVD's are people who wouldn't go or can't affort to go see the movie at the theater in the first place, therefore that money would have never gone to the movie industry. If they want to stop pirating, I think they should try harder not to let people with video camera's into the fucking theater. |

				 | here's the catch...they have to find a way to make people pay to see the movie twice like they are now...you pay $10 a head to see it in theaters, you like it, so you go home and buy the dvd 3 months later...then when the sequel comes out a year later they release the "Special Edition" with a free pass to the next movie(making you buy the DVD again)...but you won't go to the movie alone, you will pay $10 to bring antoher person...and the cycle starts again! ...... sorry ... movie store manager for 3 years!!! |

				 | Hollywood assumes that each and every person who gets a pirated movie would have either bought it or gone to the theater. So their numbers are way off. The real problem behind dwindling theater attendance is that the whole experience hasn't changed at all in over a decade, but prices have gone way up. |

A very close family member works at Technicolor and I believe you are right on track with the industry's projected future. As for why they don't do this now I'll ask, never really thought about it before. I'm sure there is some reason for it, might just be a logistics/production issue.

I agree with you.... the piracy argument is very flawed. it assumes that every person who owned that pirated dvd would have spent money in a theater. it also assumes that every owner of that pirated dvd would have bought it at $20.00 instead of $2.00. for example, its easy to buy a copy of Photoshop for $3.00 in Moscow... but just because 20,000 people bought it for 3$ does not mean 20,000 people would have paid $600.00 for it. | |

				 | 60% of all monies generated are already from DVD sales not movie tickets. Thats why you have seen the cycle of theatrical release to DVD release get shorter and shorter. Many reasons are due to this - including the improvement of technology in home theaters. I prefer my system to a theater anyday + no lines, noise, $9 tickets etc. In some sense the theatrical release is just a large advert for the upcomming DVD release. I do forsee the day when they will be released simultaniously and imho its in their best interests. |
