:mad Trying to quit smoking...

It's such a bitch...I'm chewing the nicotine gum, it helps a lot but when I woke up this morning it felt like I got hit in the jaw with a brick since I chewed so much of it.

I've gone back and forth between:

1. 'Natural' cigs called "American Spirits"
(Less Nicotine in em then regular cigs)

2. Carrots/Celery

3. Pencils

4. Gum

5. Cold Turkey

and still have been having a hard time quitting....but maybe I should focus on the 'shortness of breath' when I get up in the morning as a 'motivating' factor and just do it....

Buy some niacin (vitamin B3), niacinamide, GABA and inositol supplements. Natural valium.

And take a 200mg 5-HTP (hydroxytryptophane) supplement before bed.

Take all with a multivitamin. And see if your family doctor will prescribe vasopressin. Reduces the "conditioned reward" effect of nicotine. GREAT sex drug too. :D

btw...

use the "hunger/focus" that comes with nicotine withdrawl to, well, FOCUS on stuff that will REALLY give you a HIGH... like money, sex and living comfortably.

It's a very subtle effect but you WILL experience a psychic shift in perception when the nicotine wears off. It's just like crack = keeps a brutha down.

New GFY board still needs a spelchekker. dammit.

FATPad, with "natural cigs" you would still be inhalling *soot* and carbon monoxide into your lungs.

Try the nicotine "puffers" that deliver nicotine via a little pipe that looks like one of those old fashioned cigarette holders (provides conditioned behavioral feedback). Think "puffer", then gum THEN patch. Then cold stone turkey.

The fact is once you wean yourself off of cigarettes you will still be addicted to nicotine with the patches, gum and puffers. Nicotine is bad. Nicotine is not your friend. Nicotine is SOMA. 1984 IS REAL. LOL.:D

I don't believe in all those nicotine gums and plasters and such.
You still get the nicotine that way so when you quit using such things you still feel the need for cigs.

I quit smoking about 3months ago.
Smoked for about 8 years.
Just stopped from one day on the other day.
No plasters or gum or so.
The first week sucked and still sucks sometimes but you'll survive.

Just make sure you have something to chew on.
I chew on tooth-picks.

Good luck with it.

whatever you do, as long as you can stick it out the first week, then you will almost forget that you smoked...until a month or two later when you are in a bar and start figuring, "hey, im not a smoker anymore, i dont want a cigarette, but im going to try one just to see what it tastes like."

then you start smoking again and repeat 9 month later...

I agree, same here. being an obcessive compulsive person, I tend to do too much of one thing when i do it. smoking drinking, porn etc... ;)

And when I quit smoking (the first time I quit) it was cold turkey, just woke up and said man fuck this shit. Quit Halloween 97 didnt smoke till the big move to Cali to make the bucks in the pornworld in 99

Picked it up for about 6 months last year during some bad times, then kicked it again cold turkey. No gum, no patches. Nothing.

Well, I did have a chick kicking me in the ass about smelling up the house.... ;)
Maybe thats the secret

But it can be done. Just tell yourself its only a craving, seriously, you know how that first cigarette tastes after going about 12 days without one, I know I tend to not really like the taste, but crave it. Anyway, enough about cigs, back to work, *grab the FUCK WORK* coffee mug , damn I love this job."

here's the lowdown on the natural smokes that I've used:

1. They contain only premium quality, whole leaf, natural tobacco. In addition to leaf tobacco, most other cigarettes contain reconstituted sheet tobacco, processed stems, chemically derived synthetic flavor enhancers, preservatives, and ?burn accelerators? ? or any of the 599 additives known to be used in the manufacture of tobacco products.

So...they are not like any other name brand smokes you'll get over the counter..i.e. Marlboror, Winston, Salem, Pall Mall's, etc, etc.

Plus, as with smoking non filter smokes, you don't have the need to take a longer, harder 'hit' on the cig to get the full impact of the tobacco....you get the 'fill' in shorter burts, therefore, you actually smoke less of the cig then you would normally do with a 'name brand' cig...

Like some other people said, its not only the nicotine, but obssesive compulsive. I've already been to a shrink and thats what he diagnosed me with. So that doesn't help knowing that I have that problem with other issues in my life, plus smoking 1 and a half packs a day. And I also believe its the whole ' having something to do deal '....also mixes well with alcohol..mmm...

I've always had a hard time getting this... What does a smoker experience when they 'need a cig'? I mean, do they feel sick, or what? Do they feel like... 'uh oh, gotta get a cancer stick before I puke' or something?

nah..the feeling is more of an instant 'relaxation' when feeling uptight or nervous...though for me, smoking is more of a 'habbit' then anything else...

i've gotten into a habbit of smoking after every meal..well...cept for breakfast...so once I can get past the 'fixation' of having one right after I eat..then I'll be fine and should be able to quit...

I'd quit now but with Mardi Gras coming up in a few weeks...I know..lousy excuse!, I'm holding off till after I get back!

I tried going on Xanex, 2 hours after my first dose it felt like someone kicked me in my nutz and my gut and slipped me 10 hits of acid. Strongest fucking drug I ever took besides H. I was tripping my nutz off for 3 days which would have been cool except for not being able to eat sleep and those nagging stomach cramps. I wouldn't give my worst enemy xanex, except I told my buddy about it, and he took the rest of my script, he loves them, told me he gets really fucked up snotin them

Sensory overload. Like listening to the radio with the volume at 10 and the song is REALLY bad and you can't turn it off and you are trying to read a book and someone is talking to you from the other room and you want to hear what they are saying. Heart beat also increases sorta like after you hydroplane on a thruway offramp at 50+ MPH. And with that same "clammy, hollow felling".

Kinda like that.

Did you know nicotine (and carbon monoxide) constricts capalaries? That makes your boners softer. Nicotine is NOT your friend!

Where are the "Quit smoking" alternative sponsors anyhoo?

BUMP.

this is what i told Gary when he announced that he had quit smoking

if you can do the following without having a cigarette (before, during or after) then you have truly become a...ugh...non-smoker

1) eat lots of cheese and have some antibiotics until you're completely bunged up and can't crap (you'll either end up reaching for a cigarette or some Exlax)

2) have sex - but make sure to leave a cig on the night stand with an open pack of matches

3) wake up at 7am and drink strong coffee while reading the newspaper (you notice that your stocks have gone WAY up)

4) go to the casino and wait until you've made a good win on the tables

5 ) go to a sports bar and have a few beers while watching a championship game on the T.V. - and your team wins

this is a possible scenario to add on to the above one;

Arnold S, Bruce W and Sylvester S walk into the bar and sit down beside you

they're all smoking 'gars

Arnold S leans over and says, "you want a 'gar"?

what do you say?

a) i'll be back ...in just a moment and run out of the bar
b) how about we arm wrestle and the winner buys the girls, booze and 'gars
c) take the cigar and smoke it while shooting the shit with your new best friends

6) go to an Italian restaurant and have a 7 course meal

7) walk by a hooker and offer to light her cigarette

and the final one is the big test and you'll be soon feeling the effects in about 24 hours

8) lay in bed, shaking uncontrollably, sweating, swearing and try to make that little voice in your head go away

Hello GFY'ers ...
Been a long time but I'm back and ready to help out our dear Jolyperv with his nicotine trouble. Well I?ve quit smoking last year in August 2001 and till this day I keep on Buggin' C-Pimp about his horrible habit. Basically, I did a cold turkey! And it worked!

But mostly because I saw this add in a fitness magazine and I wanted to share it with ya'll ... who knows, it might even help someone out:

"Here's what the average pack-a-day smoker can expect after quitting his habit, some Instant Health Boosts:

- 20 minutes after quitting; Blood pressure and pulse drop to lower, normal rates. Hands and feet warm up as circulation returns to normal.

- 8 hours after quitting; Carbon monoxide levels in the blood decrease so oxygen levels return to normal. This decreases heart disease risk.

- 24 hours after quitting; Chance of heart attack decreases.

- 48 hours after quitting; Ability to smell and taste is enhansed as nerve endings in mouth and throat regenerate.

- 2 weeks to 3 months after quitting; Circulation continues to improve. Aerobic capacity improves so that moderate activities, such as walking become easier.

- 1 to 9 months after quitting; Smoking-related upper-respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, sinus congestion, and shortness of breath decrease. General energy increases. Infection-fighting ability of lungs increases.

- 1 year after quitting; Risk of heart disease in now about half that of a smoker and continues to decrease gradually thereafter.

- 5 years after quitting; Lung, mouth, throat and esophagus cancer death rates are reduced by half. Stroke risk becomes the same of that of a non-smoker.

- 10 years after quitting; Lung cancer death rates decrease to roughly equal that of a non-smoker. Any precancerous cells in respiratory tract have been replaced by normal cells.

And Voila , that's all!

I taped this ad on the mirror in the bathroom, so that every time I went to the washroom, I would be faced with these wonderful and inspirational facts! I used this as my motivational tool, no patched, no drugs, just pure self-discipline!

Hope this helps!

Ciao for now

I cut myself back to about 4 cigs a day for 2 days then did patch.

Helped that I bought a new car and didn't want it to smell like smoke so it meant I'd have to stop somewhere to smoke which made it a pain in the ass to smoke.

You could also fly from new york to hawaii non-stop and that way you'll have to go 9-10hrs without a smoke.

Thanx for all the replies, everyone. It's been a tough week, but I can already play the drums better...

It sounds stupid, but I'm starting to feel younger, and to tell you the truth, I've been jerking off like 4 times a day...not smoking seems to have increased my libido...too bad I'm too picky to have a girlfriend

Quitting is not hard, just quitting for any length of time is...

Most people quit 6-8hrs a day that smoke.
