.XXX delayed!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050916/...et_pornography

ICANN has delayed the approval of .XXX

"The board decided to seek changes to a proposed contract with ICM Registry Inc., the Jupiter, Fla., that would run the domain name for voluntary use by the adult entertainment industry. No details were immediately available on the changes sought.

The ".xxx" domain has met with opposition from conservative groups and some pornography Web sites, and ICANN postponed a final decision last month after the U.S. government stepped in just days before a scheduled meeting to underscore objections it had received. ICANN had given a preliminary OK in June."

I'd like to think that the strong showing of companies listed at http://www.FightTheDotXXX.com had something to do with it.

"ICM argues the domain would help the $12 billion online porn industry clean up its act. Those using the domain would have to abide by yet-to-be-written rules designed to bar such trickery as spamming and malicious scripts. ICM would charge $60 per name."

whoa.. hey now, i thought .XXX was to protect kids.

So the saga continues...

One wonders what "changes" they might be working on to please the religious right. I'm so glad ICM and their supporters brough this plague down on the industry! I hope it gets killed, but if it isn't... well, I don't even want to THINK about what those "changes" might be.

TLD's are not meant to regulate.

ICM's positioning to ICANN to regulate the adult online industry is just plain wrong.

.KIDS TLD is the best chance of really protecting kids and adults from seeing the "bad stuff".

Software providers and ISP can use .KIDS as a white list filter to only allow kid-friendly sites.

yup.. but ICANN must be wanting the revenue stream that ICM must have pitched them as far as the numbers that would "flock" to it.

Their TLD application showed very modest numbers of only 14,000 .XXX domains registered in the first year.. but i am sure they pitched a different tune to ICANN, especially when their CEO has already made claims in an AVNonline interview that "a thousand adult webmasters" had emailed them support for .XXX

yeah right..

.KIDS is the best way to counter .XXX

.XXX deals with the negativity of regulating and blocking adult content, in a "volutnary' manner which is completely futile since adult sites can popup anywhere.. even the new .CAT domain they approved.

.KIDs allows ONLY approved kid-friendly sites in.

Sites that pop up on an IP or some non .KIDS extension cannot get through if parents are using the right tools....

.KIDS gives parents the responsibiity and the realistic and logistical way to monitor their kids activities.

From the yahoo article, it's clear ICM is all about making money and regulating the industry, rather than trying to protect children as they have been marketing.

from xbiz article:

http://xbiz.com/news_piece.php?id=10353

"Officials at ICM continue to defend the new domain, saying it would help clean up the $12 billion industry by instituting new rules against nefarious Internet marketing campaigns and other ploys common on some adult sites, such as multiple pop-up windows or hidden redirect scripts that send unwitting surfers to adult websites. The company also has said it would make filtering of adult sites easier and more effective."

"internet marketing campaigns" = spam we have a LAW called can-spam that addresses that, no need for .XXX

"pop-ups", yahoo, google, norton, SP2, firefox, etc.. have popup blockers that have been doing a good job at stopping pop-ups, and those that used them as a revenue stream have felt the pain since SP2 was launched... so no need for .XXX

"hidden redirect scripts".. well those scripts can still be on a .com, .net, IP, .DK, .UL, etc.. .XXX can't stop that... no need for .XXX

"make filtering easier".. not really, if EVERY adult site were in .XXX, sure, but being "voluntary", means swiss cheese protection.. .KIDS would provide 100% blocking, by only allowing in .KIDS approved sites... no need for .XXX

I did not know we had to clean up our act. It's not pornographers that are the issue. it is the C. P. people that are the issue.

There is still a need to let ICANN know that .XXX is not a good idea.

If you have not already done so, you can sent a letter to ICANN via this link:
http://www.freespeechcoalition.com/xinfo.htm

You can use the template text, or add your own.

Be sure to let ICANN know that .KIDS is a better way of protecting children than .XXX

Letters sent via the link above are private, meaning your name won't get posted to a page like those that wanted to make a public stand against .XXX at http://www.FightTheDotXXX.com

Why the hands-over-ears response, Connor? Have we not learned (for finding ourselves in this surreal situation) that "representatives" for us will materialize and take advantage of the dialogue opportunities that are offered, make deals on our behalf, even ...

I love this from the FRC:

The porn industry suffered a partial, yet major defeat yesterday when the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers again delayed approving the .XXX domain. We understand the Internet's governing agency has been under "overwhelming pressure" by opponents. That comes as no surprise to us. In fact, FRC led the opposition. The porn industry has all but dominated the Internet for a dozen years and we can see no reason to reward it with even more space. Instead we have called for a "get tough" approach by the Department of Justice against those who distribute illegal pornography on the Internet in violation of U.S. law. We will continue also to oppose the .XXX domain until ICANN, perhaps at the insistence of the U.S. Commerce Department, kills off this foolish idea. Yesterday, USA Today published FRC's senior legal counsel's op-ed on the .XXX domain. Click the link below to read the op-ed.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion...4-oppose_x.htm

(be advised, the author of the op-ed is Patrick Trueman, senior legal counsel at the conservative Family Research Council)

.KIDS would be brilliant. Anyone want to start a registry with me and lobby for that?

With allthe work that ICM and IFFOR has done, they could be a great candidate to run it..

all those "best business practices" and screening and rules that IFFOR came up with, could be applied to .KIDS

problem with that idea, is there is more money to be made on .XXX domains than .KIDS domains, so this is all about the money, not "protecting kids" as ICM/IFFOR originally pitched .XXX to people.

Network Solutions would be in a great position to run .KIDS since they already have the infrastructure up in running .COM
