A good question. Is the movement tracked and recorded anywhere by anyone? Can you access it?

I'd be willing to bet there's a way to download that information from the GPS receiver.

If it's an aftermarket GPS, you can't.

There's no "GPS Company", but depending on the unit used ... you can get a list of previous locations from the unit's built in harddrive/memstick.

Rental car places do it all the time, but I'm not sure what kind of set ups they have.

Yeah a lot of higher end cars, especially if they are on leases will have the lo-jack installed.

gps is one way, systems such as lowjack relay the information usually by cellphone or uhf, or both. They also emit a uhf ping used by some larger police departments for tracking units in the field.

Haulage companies can track their vehicles but I think they do that with a cell phone sim card rather than through GPS.

GPS by itself is receive only. You would have to have some software setup to track location and record it and/or upload it elsewhere.

most consumer GPS (garmin, etc) have a follow waypoint feature which updates lon/lat at a specified time (in cars this is usually every 60 secs) and stores it is a folder which can be retrieved...so you can see where you've been. however these gps do not transmit your position externally like "on star". |

read the manual to setup seconds between waypoint saving, etc. not all gps do this but the majority do that have been manufactured recently---you will need the lon/lat points to plot them on a street map using street map software. the gps must be turned on while the car is in motion, and programmed to save the waypoints at a specified interval---then it just a matter of opening the folder and the waypoints (lon/lat fixes) will be plotted on a street map. delorme.com is one of the most popular vendors for this, and they also can merge the data from popular gps (garmin, magellen, lowrance, etc) they also sell GPS and have a good setup for street navigation using a laptop. good for outside sales crew, etc. |
