You don't have a GPS "company" not sure where you got that from.

I don't have GPS, but the car I borrowed last night did.

Dagwolf 09-11-2005 02:12 PM

A good question. Is the movement tracked and recorded anywhere by anyone? Can you access it?

2257-Ben 09-11-2005 02:13 PM

I'd be willing to bet there's a way to download that information from the GPS receiver.

Basic_man 09-11-2005 02:16 PM

If it's an aftermarket GPS, you can't.

Not by any third parties with standard GPS
If you have something like Onstar they can see where you are all times
And yeah its possible to get the info from the gps if it has some sort of data port

kimzar 09-11-2005 02:25 PM

Don't worry! she will be over at my place getting fucked! :winkwink:

emthree 09-11-2005 02:33 PM

There's no "GPS Company", but depending on the unit used ... you can get a list of previous locations from the unit's built in harddrive/memstick.

Peaches 09-11-2005 02:35 PM

Rental car places do it all the time, but I'm not sure what kind of set ups they have.

Anthony 09-11-2005 02:35 PM

My G35 kept a record of where the car went.

Pipecrew 09-11-2005 02:37 PM

LoJack will haha.

GTS Mark 09-11-2005 02:41 PM

Yeah a lot of higher end cars, especially if they are on leases will have the lo-jack installed.

Right, but does it record where it is at all times, or does it "report" when queryed?

umm, so where were you last night!

Radik 09-11-2005 04:43 PM

gps is one way, systems such as lowjack relay the information usually by cellphone or uhf, or both. They also emit a uhf ping used by some larger police departments for tracking units in the field.

SGS 09-11-2005 04:44 PM

Haulage companies can track their vehicles but I think they do that with a cell phone sim card rather than through GPS.

emthree 09-11-2005 05:42 PM

btw: did you commit murder with a rent-a-car?

throwdown 09-11-2005 05:46 PM

It came in the car. Its a Volvo.

GPS by itself is receive only. You would have to have some software setup to track location and record it and/or upload it elsewhere.

most consumer GPS (garmin, etc) have a follow waypoint feature which updates lon/lat at a specified time (in cars this is usually every 60 secs) and stores it is a folder which can be retrieved...so you can see where you've been.

however these gps do not transmit your position externally like "on star".

How can it be retrieved ?

depends on your gps. all it needs is a timed waypoint saving feature at a specified interval and then you use a mapping software to plot your points on a street map so you can see where the car has been.

read the manual to setup seconds between waypoint saving, etc. not all gps do this but the majority do that have been manufactured recently---you will need the lon/lat points to plot them on a street map using street map software.

the gps must be turned on while the car is in motion, and programmed to save the waypoints at a specified interval---then it just a matter of opening the folder and the waypoints (lon/lat fixes) will be plotted on a street map.

delorme.com is one of the most popular vendors for this, and they also can merge the data from popular gps (garmin, magellen, lowrance, etc) they also sell GPS and have a good setup for street navigation using a laptop. good for outside sales crew, etc.
