The feds (Bush) are to blame for slow Hurricane relief efforts
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/katrina_national_guard
WASHINGTON - Several states ready and willing to send National Guard troops to the rescue in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans didn't get the go-ahead until days after the storm struck ? a delay nearly certain to be investigated by Congress. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson offered Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco help from his state's National Guard on Sunday, the day before Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana. Blanco accepted, but paperwork needed to get the troops en route didn't come from Washington until late Thursday. California troops just began arriving in Louisiana on Friday, three days after flood waters devastated New Orleans and chaos broke out. In fact, when New Orleans' levees gave way to deadly flooding on Tuesday, Louisiana's National Guard had received help from troops in only three other states: Ohio, which had nine people in Louisiana then; Oklahoma, 89; and Texas, 625, figures provided by the National Guard show. |

"Reality Check #1
A direct Category 5 hit is a once in every 200 year event. Do you spend an extra 50 billion or 100 billion making larger levees and pumps for a city that shouldn't be built 25 feet below Sea level? Or should you spend it on moving the poorest to new housing built on higher ground? Or, for a once in every 200 year event do you spend Millions keeping at least 2000 buses on hand with drivers during Hurricane season so that the 120,000 poorest New Orleans people(60 per bus) without cars can with 24 hours notice be evacuated from the city and driven to where??? Some Tent City in Houston. Keep in mind the Hurricane could have moved to the west and hit Houston where you just moved the 120,000 people to. Who do you blame then?" |

I see we're all in the blame stage today.
Tomorrow we'll be in the "who should we hang first?" stage.

"Reality Check # 2
- Personal Responsibility - Lets start here where the blame should start at the bottom not the top. - Evacuation orders were given for Residents to leave New Orleans and the Gulf Coast area. Hundreds of thousands did. Some could leave but chose not to and some could not leave for medical reasons and others did not leave due to lack of funds or lack of transportation. If you stayed, than you have a personal responsibility to prepare. For a Category 3 hurricane at least 3 days of Food, water, diapers, etc. For a Category 5 at least 5 days of the same. Kids learn in school to have a plan in case of a house fire; Hurricane areas teach having a disaster plan and hurricane plan for the family. Why, so you have enough food, water , diapers etc. until electricity and water are restored or until you can reach a Shelter or evacuation center. If you went to the Superdome were they not required to bring a 3 day supply of water with them? did they not tell them they would not supply food? Bring it with you. If you stayed in your Home or apartment should you not have those supplies already moved to your attic? Then How in the world can I see, Healthy walking and talking people on the news saying I haven't had food nor water in 5 days or as some news casters say "Days and Days"(extra drama not news). Did not Katrina Hit Monday? Was not the city of New Orleans Spared for a day? Did not the levees start to break on Tuesday? Should not everyone just be running out of their 3-5 day supply on Thursday or Friday?" |

Neither, what are you? "Reality Check Mayor and city of New Orleans is the second most important area of responsibility and blame. New Orleans is a poor city -yes. It is also Democratically run by African-American Democrats. Suggestion: Over 1 million tourists per month visit New Orleans. With proper planning by the city and a $5 Bed tax on each tourist the Mayor of New Orleans could have had a much better Disaster Plan for his residents. " |

After Hurricane Andrew hit Miami, the ONLY help that went to the aid of Florida City, and Homestead and south miami, was the local police officers, and that took almost 2 days.
THE LAST THING THAT YOU DO IN A SITUATION LIKE IN NO is to send a bunch of people to an area, with out the proper equipment, food, and a place to sleep, and store thier equipment. Did you expect them to swim thier patrol area? Get real. Doing what needs to be done in NO is a logistical nightmare right now. A lot of this takes time.

I particullarily like when people say "All of the National Guard is in Iraq and it's Bush's fault they can't go to LA.".
News flash gang, it takes time to mobilize civilian soldiers. They weren't mobilized in 12 hours and sent to Iraq and neither can they be mobilized in 12 hours and sent to LA.

Dated August 28th "FEMA is moving supplies of generators, water, ice and food into the region for immediate deployment once the storm passes. FEMA?s Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) and Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMATs) are also staged for immediate response anywhere in the region. The funding and direct federal assistance will assist law enforcement with evacuations, establishing shelters and other emergency protective measures." http://bbsnews.net/article.php/20050828205806593 |

Millions to prepare for a stage 5 hurricane. Billions on the Iraq war. Billions to rebuild the area now that the levees are broke and the city flooded. Hmmmm i wonder which one is better. The republicans obviously like putting america in debt to our eyeballs. Captain obvious doesn't seem to realize that New Orleans wasn't built 3 years ago. It been around a couple more years than that. If your idiotic rational is used, then we better start relocating San Fran for earthquakes, Seattle and Portland Or. for volcanoes. Las Vegas and Phoenix, and LA for lack of water. What a stupid fucking train of thought. These cities were built hundreds of years ago, and you act like they should just move the city. Brilliant. I have an idea. How about we pull every fucking one of our Army corp of engineers out of fucking Iraq today. Who gives a flying rats ass about them, except the fucking oil companies. Lets take care of our own for once. Maybe the oil companies that are fucking us, as we speak can rebuild Iraq, and put Bush in as king. That way everyone would be happy. |
