:mad Is GOOGLE getting a big head ?

Google just shocks me sometimes.. these guys are getting scary..

They are planning on scanning books from the biggest universities in the u.s. to add to its search index..

Umm wtf ?? did i just read that right.. google wants to steal everyones copyrighted material and add it to google for free .

Um well gee, i would like to do that also.

Scan books from library's that you dont own , then offer them on the internet for free ( well besides my advertising )

The kicker is , they are offering an OPT-OUT to the book owners, if you dont want your books stolen and reproduced you have to contact them and have your book opted-out..

hahahah

Excuse me sir i want to steal your shit and give it away to everyone, but if you tell me ahead of time i wont steal it..

Funny , because just yesterday i was mentioning to someone about "chiltons" manuals ( car repair manuals ) and i was thinking , why dont these shmucks have this shit online.. Instead of waiting 2 weeks for the damn manual to arrive..

Little did i know i could start a whole business just scanning the expensive manuals and giving them away for free online. lol

whoops i forgot , i'm not google , i would be arrested.

No, you did not read that right:

I think they are are doing it so you can search the books, not just read the whole damn thing online.

But think about, libraries are even worse. How would you feel if public libraries had one subscription to your porn sites and anyone could just show up, download everything, copy it to a disc, and leave? Thats what book publishers deal with.

Why would that surprise anyone - they already do it with your websites - keeping a cached copy of your copywrited work without your permission - oh thats right - you can opt out by putting a meta on your pages to disallow caching

I hope the potential conflicts and issues are resolved soon because this will definitely take online research to another level. Webmasterlabor.com does researched and referenced blog entries on a bulk basis and this development would definitely add a lot more value to the blogs we do. Cross references and linked sources and annotations definitely add more value.

I see the difference by indexing and stealing. Do you? If its in the library for free anyway, whats the big deal?

From the article on yahoo (which is their competitor) they make it sound that this is not good for the publishers and that they will not pay them. Thats cheap propaganda. Now do some research, instead of believing all thats written on the web:

Google themself write; "..direct potential buyers to your website, provide ongoing reports about user interest in your books, and your books will also earn revenue from contextual advertising"

There's a difference in accessibility, nothing else. If publishers are paid from the library, a bookstore or from advertisings at a website makes no difference to me. I don't think this will hurt the publishers financial, because in the end it will reach more people. It's not piracy, and if the music and movie industry would follow same path, they would make money instead of fighting technology.

Publishers are not paid from libraries. Libraries loan the copies they have out but don't provide a free permanent copy to those who want one. It would hurt publishers if they did, same if they were giving out free permanent copies of music and video to everyone who wanted one.

They are probably scanning it just so they can index it, I really doubt they would show full copies of the books to anyone... at least not yet, down the line, they would probably create a site like amazon where they would sell digital books from...

I dont see a difference.. If i publish a book, i wan't it read in a certain way , its art , it would be like reproducing andy warhol on pabst beer labels..

Can i "index" my monthly issue of playboy ? I think not...

As i said initially you didnt read far enough , its an opt-out approach meaning publishers/authors have no choice unless they contact google..

Would it be all right for me to reproduce playboy/hustler/time magazine/people etc every month, for "indexing" ..

So yahoo is "cheap propoganda" then you quote google writing propoganda for itself.. ?.

I posted the yahoo link for a reason , this is gfy , if i had posted 50 indy news links nobody would have read past the first line.
