Canada is good with the fact that the government pays medical expenses. The problem is more and more people are dying waiting for treatment because the government doesn't have the $ to provide proper medical care.
I hope your girl gets the treatment she needs, good luck |

On the sixth day God turned to Archangel Gabriel and said: "Today I am going to create a land called Canada, it will be a land of outstanding natural beauty. It shall have tall majestic mountains full of mountain goats and eagles, beautiful sparkling lakes bountiful with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs over-looking sandy beaches with an abundance of sea life, and rivers stocked with salmon." God continued, "I shall make the land rich in oil and resources so as to make the inhabitants prosper, I shall call these inhabitants Canadians, and they shall be known as the most friendly people on the earth." "But Lord," asked Gabriel, "don't you think you are being too generous to these Canadians?" "Not really," replied God, "just wait and see the neighbours I am going to give them." |

Hey Chris, I hear where you're coming from. People have no clue how bad insurance companies will fuck you over, given the chance, until they themselves are fucked over.
Check into grants / programs and such. If it is truly purely cosmetic, I doubt you'll have luck, but if the problem requires any sort of special care and is disabling in any sense you should be able to find something. If this will truly make her happy for the rest of her life, pay the downpayment the hospital / dr. wants, work out a payment plan and have it done. Worst case, if you can't afford it later one, file for bankruptcy. Good luck. |

I'll never understand why the US doesn't move to a free health care system for the sake of their citizens.

A friend of mine had a massive heart attack just over a year ago. He was lucky. He wasn't feeling good and he went to emergency where he literally dropped dead on the floor. They were able to resucitate and treat him. However, he had to wait over 6 months to see a cardiologist for a followup appointment once he was released from the hospital. I'm not saying if someone needed a life saving operation today they wouldn't get it, but this guy was an extreme case and couldn't get in to see a specialist for half a year? That's ridiculous. Not to mention we just spent millions on a new wing to our hospital out here, but can't find the doctors to man it. It's SO bad in a city of 50,000 people, we only have two pediatricians. ANY woman giving birth that is suspected to have problems during childbirth must drive 2 hours away to be given proper treatment. It's happened a couple of times that patients have been airlifted to another hospital because of unsuspected complications. Then there's the case of the guy who's hand was nearly severed but waited in our emergency room for 2 and a half days before being treated. My wife used to work in health care, so she's seen firsthand how our health system is stretched to its limit. |

Don't you guys have medicare for broke people?. Problem with canada is the waitlists; sure it's cheap health care but you die waiting for it.

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter, it's very sad when there's something wrong with one of your babies. You want them to have a perfect life.
Even Canada doesn't cover procedures they consider 'cosmetic' though. For example, all three of my children were born via caesarean section. With my third baby, the interior incision came open, leaving be with a 2 inch wide 'divot' under my skin right above my exterior scar. Eventhough it is the result of a life-saving operation covered by them, the corrective procedure is considered 'cosmetic' and I am stuck with the cost of repairing the doctor's damage. Oh, and you wait a really long time to see a specialist or have medical imaging testing done here. Canada is awesome and I wouldn't live anywhere else in the world, but it isn't the medical Promise Land like some people think. |

Canada has an amazing health system.....sure you don't pay (comes out of your income)..but oh boy you gotta wait for it!!! For non-critical things, fine!! But when it gets to the point where emergency rooms in hospitals are overcrowded with only ONE doctor for hundreds of people.........something's wrong.....doctors are running away to the states cuz they get paid more over there.......what are you left with

My older sister had triplets and medical expenses for sugeries and the babies 3 months stay at the hospital and many critical surgeries to the older girl total amount she owes the hospital, 2 million dollars. She did not have to pay a dime of it. U.S is great too, just got to know how to use the system. 2cents

Chris, sorry to hear about that. Honestly, in your case, if private insurance won't cover it, I have a huge doubt that a public healthcare system, such as the Canadian, will do anything about it. I, too, have experienced an overloaded, understaffed public healthcare system, so I know for a fact that, unless you're dying, they'll make you wait a long time and certain treatmens they'll tell you to get privately, because the public system doesn't cover them.
Shemp, way to liven up the thread.

Also wanted to add that our free health care system just caused alot of problems in my life. They fucked my hand/wrist up permanently... It may only be a limb and not as serious as other peoples problems but having limited use of a wrist/hand for a 23year old IS a big deal. Plus the fact that it should have been treated properly from day one, 5 weeks later im still in a cast with a hand turning funny colors from the poor circulation. Not to mention I can't feel my fingers, even if i could use em.
This is the absolute worst summer of my life, I've had a cast, its been record heat the whole summer so far. My experience in the hospital was a joke, no one knows whats going on. It was suprisingly un-organized & I had to fill out some forms 6 times within 3 hours. They kept loosing them, and each time the current person blamed the last person with the files. Quote:
It's just like all the new cancer prevention machines we have. The government refuses to use them, because they cost to much to run. This machine cab detect cancer before its a threat, but nooo it cost's to much. It's just a joke, why'd we even spend 3million on it then? so it can sit for 2 years.... We just had (march) petitions going around because we needed 2million signatures for the cause of getting equal cancer treatment nation wide. I'm not sure how it came out but I went around & got like 300 signatures. That treatment would have included those machines, to detect it & save people before it was too late. Something just really needs to be done about it. You can go into the ER, as i have to weekly now just to see my specialist's (at least i get to see one tho) but the wait is still hours, WITH an appoinment. |

well if you like Canada just move there
There will be no border by the year 2010 It's part of a plan to "integrate the north american hemishphere" http://www.eagleforum.org/column/200.../05-07-13.html While the Canadians are wasting their time debating about fags getting married and socialized medicine - Martin is in Texas selling Canada to the highest bidder http://www.asc-hsa.org/article.php3?id_article=271 |

Medicare isn't everything it's built up to be here. The best care is still private care IMO. Waiting lists are long, and Medicare doesn't cover cosmetic surgery. So even if the doctor screws up and you need cosmetics to fix the problems, you're left with the bill. Also good luck on trying to sue for it, cause unlike the USA you can't sue for legal fees here, and the pay outs aren't as high. So in the end it still costs you. There are other great reasons for living in Canada, and I wouldn't live anywhere else, but Medicare isn't the "save all" people think it is.

Sorry to hear about your daughter Chris.
I love Canada. But really, our health care isn't free anymore. We pay a lot of taxes for a lot of different health related things. In Ontario, the new provincial government is even working to further tax individuals each pay period for health care related expenses. Personally, while I think that it's great that we have "free" health care for everyone, the only people who really benefit from it are people who don't work. They don't have to pay the taxes that in turn pay for our health care. In the states, you can choose to buy comprehensive insurance and get covered for just about everything. You get to select the coverage that's right for you and pay for it. For me, Canada is great for a lot of reasons, but health care (especially in Ontario) isn't one of them. I really wish that they'd change it, but people don't often look beyond the surface during an election.
