Oh man that brought more than a tear to my eye and a few of them are rolling down my face. I love animals more than I love people. Animals have an innocence to them. I've lost friends around my age on average of about 1 a year since I was 16. I've lost 2 pets in that time and both times the pets take me months to recover from. My cat died a little over a year ago. She had bad asthma and suffocated to death on a hot spring day.

My girlfriend got a new ferret to keep her other ferret company and the new one got her other one really sick yesterday. She's been crying and depressed all day flipping out.

We are both animal people I guess. My dog is 12 or so and she's still really hyper and crazy. Her breed (Australian Cattle Dog) lives from 12-15, but she seems so vibrant and energetic still. People are amazed she's so old. I don't know how I'll deal with it when she's gone.

Sorry to go off on my own selfish rant there. I was trying to convey that I understand what you are going through and got a bit carried away. It's the little things about pets or people I always miss the most and are the most memorable. You'll get over it but your life is that much richer for having shared it with your cat and nothing can ever take that away. Good luck and if you feel like chattin hit me on icq... 111-914

Sorry to hear about that. My cat that I had growing up is still alive to this day. I got her when I was 7 years old...I'm now 28, and she is still very lively, but tends to not have that great of balance anymore and she drools quite a bit. She stays over at my mom's house, whom I only visit about 4 times a year. Every time I go over there I know it may be the last time I ever see my cat again...breaks my fucking heart.

You and me both, man. I live with my GF and she has one of coolest cats in the world, but fuck I'd hate to see her when her cat dies.

Very sorry to hear about your loss and my heart goes out to you. It sounds like you loved her very much and did everything that you could for her. I have two cats of my own who are 10 and 11, which I have raised from kittens and they are like family to me. I love them a lot, and would be devastated if anything happened to either one of them so I can only imagine how tough this is for you. Hang in there.

Sorry to hear about your cat. We know how hard it is, having lost several pets over the years. I still think quite often about my first dog who died almost 20 years ago. For those who care, pets are just like your own kids. They really are family members.

Lost my best buddy ever a couple years ago. She was 18. I still think about her daily. When I find myself thinking about the sad time near and at the end I look at the cute 8x10 headshot of her I have on the wall. It's my favorite pic of her, it was made 8 years ago and perfectly captures her spirit and personality. Everyone I know swears that dog could read my mind and understood every word I said to her. I often said she was my true soulmate.

I too have a cat born in '89. Despite still getting chased by dogs and a habit of lying in the street she is still pretty fiesty and has a good chance of living to be older than my dog was.

As far as quickly getting another pet, I had decided it would be awhile before I would think about getting another dog (I never use the word replace) but as it turned out shortly before she died I ended up taking in the "one too many" my sister had accumulated and a couple months after she died I saved a little girl dog from going to the pound. The boy dog is a behavior problem that hates me half the time and the girl likes to play and has her affectionate moments, but combined they aren't even remotely close to the loyalty and love of my old buddy. They are both hyper... I put them in a doggie door and doggie-proofed the fence so they can come and go at will and they do make excellent guard rats

You'll know if/when it's time to get another (unless as in my case another or two come get you first ).

You can't hold on to the guilt thing though. Hindsight we want to think, "Maybe if I had done this/that...", we can't keep them forever. Here's to celebrating you and your kitty's 18 lucky and wonderful years

"Tipoil" was diagnosed with CRF (Renal failure). She was 15. I moved into my new house last week and she seriously got dehydrated and she was extremely weak. I decided to take her to the vet. This was the last time I saw her. I learned the next day that her kidneys stopped working properly. The toxicity in her blood was so high that the machines could not give an accurate number. I still wanted to try treatment. She was put on IV with fluids for 48 hours. The vet told me that if the toxicity in her blood didn't drop, I'd have to take a hard decision. I was devastated. I couldn't stop crying.

I didn't want to go see her because it would hurt me a lot seeing her under treatment. I started reading a lot on the internet about CRF and the treatments at home (Sub-Q fluids and a special diet).

I had hopes.

Then they called me yesterday with the results. Bad news. The toxicity was still extremely high. Her kidneys really stopped functionning. No treatment could save her. I started crying over the phone and decided to make the final decision. Euthanasia.

I decided not to go see her, it was too hard for me. I didn't want to see her dying in front of me.

But today I feel extremely guilty because I didn't go see her and that I didn't go for her euthanasia.

Maybe I should've wait a little longer, bring her home, spend some more time with her then take an appointement for the euthanasia. Now I feel like I didn't have time to see say goodbye. I know that the euthanasia was the only solution but I think my decision was rushed. I am so confused and sad.

I miss my cat so much.. I dreamed about her last night. In my dream I hugged her and told her I loved her.

I'm thinking about all the wonderful years I had with her and how well she was treated. She was a special queen. She had an excellent life. I know it was the perfect decision but I still feel guilt.

For the past couple of months, she started losing weight, drinking more water and urinating a lot in the litter box. I didn't know she was sick. Now I know why.

I'm only saying goodbye because I know I will see her someday, in another world, or state of conscience.

I know how you feel, I had 3 cats and one at a time I had 2 have them put to sleep. All of them where over 15 years old.

I cried every time.
I didn't get the cats, one of my ex-wives got'm and when she left she left the cats. She thought she would be coming back but I told her I was very happy with my life just the it was..... with out her...

But dam I loved those little guys.

A pet can be a real friend

I have a 10 year old dobberman myself and the average age for a dobberman is 9 years. Hes still good, but sometimes I think about the fact he isn't with me anymore soon ... Makes me feel sad.

Sorry to hear about your cat buddy.

I completely understand...

I lost 2 cats within 3 months of each other - both were 16.

It's kind of hokey, but it really helped me a lot to go to www.petloss.com (be warned, the main page has music) and join in on their candle lighting ceremony for lost pets... they have a chat room and message board there as well.

Hope this helps during this tough time,

Hey No Carrier-
Really, really sorry to hear about your kitty. I too, just had to put one of mine down this spring. Chester was 14 had also had CRF. He was diagnosed about 4 years ago and thankfully, we were able to manage it pretty well w/diet and regular checkups. But then he developed diabetes and that really complicated things. He would have probably lasted a bit longer, but I had to make that awful decision to euthanize him too. It's sooo hard and I completely understand your sadness. Just know and believe that you did the right thing. You gave your kitty a wonderful life and home and the ability to go in peace.

My thoughts are with you-

My cat was 15 when her kidneys failed too. We had her on saline shots for a few days (she was dehydrated, then after the shots, was alert and perky again, then she would fade out by the next day). My mom got her the shots until my brother and I could come visit (this was during July 4th a few years ago). After seeing her like that, I decided the shots weren't worth it. (it was like $6/shot at the vet, and without it, she'd die anyway). It was just prolonging the inevitable. It sucked, but I think it was for the best when we had her put down. 15 years is a long time. I still miss that cat.

losing a a pet (though they are considered family members to most) is one of the hardest things. i remember having to put my dog to sleep, whom i had since i could remember. hardest thing ive ever done. i choose to be there when they did it, didnt feel right leaving him with strangers.

deeply sorry for your loss.

I completely feel for you about making the decision to keep her medicated or finally have to put he down. I also got results that were extremely high and also did 2 days if fluids which didn't help. I then decided to bring her home and give her lots of meds and take her to the Vet every couple days to get fluids. Nothing helped of course. The only option was a kidney transplant which is really expensive and not really an option when they get that sick.
My kitty only made it a couple more weeks and we had to also have her put down. She just laid around and we forced water and meds into her all the time and got so weak she couldn't even make it to the litter box or even stand up to go to the bathroom. It was just to hard to see her like that so it was best for her. The day she got bad like this was quick and immediately I took her to the vet but it was those few hours of knowing she couldn't get up on her own was very very hard.

My point is you did the right thing. I did what I thought was the best to keep her alive as long as I could and hold her and spend as much time with her before she got too bad but to see her like that was too much. It is now very hard to get those visions out of my head so I think you made the right move and not letting her suffer.

On a side note when I kissed my kitty goodbye for the last time I told her to come play with me in my dreams and show me she is ok so maybe that was your kitty's way of showing you she is happy and ok and waiting for you.

Here is a great poem that helped me when this happened
http://rainbowsbridge.com/Poem.htm

My Kitty (Tiger Lilly)
wow, your kitty looks alot like my new kitten (he'll be 7 months old soon)...

im so sorry to hear about your loss (both NoCarrier & paytonrain)

I lost one to FIP. We knew there was nothing we could do, it was just a (painful) matter of time. So we took him to a park and let him play in the grass, poor guy was suffocating to death as fluid filled his lungs, but his last memories are chasing birds in a park under blue sky before going to sleep. We couldn't watch either, but I'll never forget that little guy with the biggest heart.

Very sorry for your loss man Hang in there, you are lucky to have had 15 awesome years.
