You dont see me asking about that stuff again. They just did a huge steroid bust here in Lincoln. One owner of a supplement place and 3 men so far. They say they are the main people running a nation wide distribution service.

I take Glucophage for it and if I eat properly, I lose weight. I lost about 40 lbs. a few years ago on Atkin's (bad move). Of course, once I stopped, I gained it all back (and then some). I'm the first to admit that I haven't been diligent about it but this past Monday I decided to make an effort. Hopefully it will work out for me. My doctor basically told me to stay away from the bad carbs rather than cutting out carbs altogether. We'll see what happens....
Sorry to hear about your PCOS. In that respect, I'm lucky...I don't have any serious health issues other than smoking (bad tara!) and being overweight. :P

May I ask why you say that Atkin's was a bad move for you? I ask, because I recently started on Induction, have lost 8.5lbs thus far and feel 100% better both mentally and physically. What did you find about it that you didn't like?

It seems that Atkin's controlled your issue with insulin? I'm guessing that the excess insulin causes some sugar cravings because it has nothing to 'hold on' to? (just a half ass educucated guess...lol)

Your doctor's advice is certainly good. Choosing the RIGHT carbs is crucial, not only to weight loss, but good health in general.

The more I read about Atkin's, the more I was convinced it was exactly what I needed...and, so far, I've been right.

There is still alot of misconceptions about Atkin's out there, including the complete elimination of carbs...and that's just not true. As you move along through the program, you add new and different carbs to your diet until you hit your 'breaking point' (the point where you start to gain weight) Then, you just back off 5g of carbs a day and that's your maintenance level.

I was really surprised at the variety of carbs you can eat once you hit maintenance. And with the variety of carbs, you don't have to eat as much protein, which, for some people too much protein is scary as it can cause undue work/stress on your kidneys and liver. (this is my biggest concern...although I'm young, and relatively healthy so...)

I think the key to Atkin's is that you don't consider it a diet, but rather a lifestyle change. You will NEVER be able to eat the same way you did before without gaining the weight back. And because it's a healthy way to eat you really are gaining not only with weight loss/maintenance, but also with your general health.

Did you stop because it caused other health issues for you? Or did you just 'break'?

I can kind relate to that. I have Gilberts disease. pernounced gil bears

What my liver does is take in all the red blood cells and instead of changing them to white blood cells then letting them go like its suppose to, it just keeps the red and doesnt let out anything.

While this may have seemed contradictory, in the first post, I was referring to what has happened/can happen since I started taking Glucophage for PCOS.

In the second post, I was referring to what had happened since puberty because of PCOS (prior to taking Glucophage).

"Yet, since the onset of menstruation, I've gained weight and kept it on regardless of the food that I ate."

I hope that clarifies things for you.

Thank you very much. Although, personally, I don't consider PCOS to be a major health issue. It's just something that I was diagnosed with and is a part of my life. It doesn't affect any other part of my life. I don't have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. It was just the cause of my weight gain as a young teen.

Atkin's was a bad move for me because I should have never began such a strict regimen of low carbs. While it did help me lose the weight, it wasn't necessarily the way for me to go, health-wise. I didn't learn this until after I stopped and fully discussed it with my doctor. That's when she advised me to just stay away from the bad carbs. As far as why I stopped, I peaked and wasn't losing any more weight. I also stayed on Induction during the entire 4 months, which is not good. It is correct that you can introduce more carbs into your diet the further along you are in Atkin's but again, I tend to defer to my doctor's advice.

I've read a lot about Atkin's and while it may not be the right diet (or lifestyle change) for me, it has worked wonders for others. There is no miracle cure or diet that works for everyone. Our bodies react and act differently from one person to another.

I'm happy to hear that Atkin's is working for you and I wish you the best! Congratulations on your weight loss so far.

As far as smoking is concerned, I won't preach to you about that. I'm a former smoker but have never been one of "those" people who preach.

P.S. I'm still relatively young too. I'm 34 but don't feel like it.

Thanks for the moral support! It's always appreciated when you are trying to do something good for yourself. ;)

You're younger than I am....hehe...I turned 35 this year....but I felt 50...hence the complete change in lifestyle...I'm not getting any younger....but I'm still young enough to do something about it...hahaha

You're absolutely right that nothing works for everyone, all the time. Everyone's body is different and has it's own way of working. Getting to know your own body is certainly a HUGE part in losing unwanted weight.

I was thinking of staying on induction for 1 month....then move on from there...especially if the weight continues to fall off the way it is....I'll be more than happy to add some new food items to my diet...hehe.

I asked my doctor about Atkin's after I had my daughter (almost 2 years ago now...yikes!) He thought it may be worth trying for me, and thought it was safe....so, here I am. (yes, 2 years later, but, better late than never!)

I have 50lbs to go....I'm sooooooo ready!!

Best of luck to you, too! I have some awesome home-made bread recipes that are high fibre if you're interested.

ps - thanks for not preaching on the smoking thang....I preach to myself enough as it is!

weird!

Have you ever tried Atkin's? I don't wanna preach here or try to get people to do something they don't want to.....but, if you're open to learning about it maybe it's something you can try.

I've seen soooo many message boards where people have thrown out the pills they were taking for 'this ailment' and 'that ailment'.....I certainly can't give personal testimony....but, who knows!

Hope things get better for you!

It's not a diet...it's a lifestyle change...and you MUST think of it that way.

Beef is fine if that's the only protein you want to eat...haha....meat is just one part of Atkin's....the carbs in the form of veggies (to start with) are the other along with fat. Then you work you way up to other more 'starchy' veggies, then nuts, berries and then whole grain breads even....(if your body can handle them)

As I said before, there is alot of misconceptions about Atkin's being only about meat....but, it's just not true.

The thing that I am truly amazed at is that I'm NOT starving! I eat until I'm full and that 'full' feeling lasts for hours. The keytones that are released in the bloodstream when you are in Ketosis (which is what Atkin's does) are your own, all natural appetite suppressants....and trust me...they are the only appetite suppressants you need....I'm still in awe over that part of it. I crave stuff ALL the time...especially chocolate and all that bad stuff...hehe....but, not anymore...sometimes I have to remind myself to eat....

Lately.. And this is no joke, I've been eating a half a watermelon for breakfast. I think it's helping. I've lost a few pounds just this week.

I know I shouldn't lose weight to fast, so I'm trying to pace myself. It took me years to get this heavy, it should take me a while to take it off.

I've been getting back on the treadmill lately. I can barely jog a mile without feeling like I'm gonna die. Sad. I hope to get up to a 5 mile jog by this time next year.

I listen to this for inspiration.

Please listen to it. It may inspire all you disgusting fat bodies as well.

More power to you but if I could add a few suggestions.

Instead of Taco Bell, try eating Subway instead and go light on the sauce.
Instead of the Watermelon, have a bowl of cereal and a slice of watermelon.
Instead of McDonalds, goto Wendy's and have a side salad, a bake potato, and an ice tea.
Instead of having that coke, have some water or tea.

I have much better suggestions but I realize that everybody has their own pace... for now, these would be good alternatives.

You don't have to change your life drastically, but these small changes can have a drastic change on your life. GL!
