I spent four years in the Marines, and at the time I hated it. Instead, I bit my tongue, kept my mouth, and just did the best I could.

Once I got out I quickly discovered it was a huge mistake. You didn't know it at the time, but it was fun. Blowing shit up and playing war games is a lot more fun than flipping fucking burgers. The money sucked but it surely wasn't much better making $3.50 an hour and having to pay rent an no health benefits.

I kept in a touch with a lot of my Marine buddies, and most of them are about set to retire. Sweet.

How to get out? There is no sure fire method. One guy in my unit attempted to run down his comanding officer with am AMTRAC. He missed, thankfully, but ended up in a rubber room in the brig (I'm not kidding!). One guy intentionally smashed his foot with a slegehammer; He was sent to the hospital and returned to duty.

Tell your friend to be careful. Chances are it's alredy well known in his unit that he's not happy in the service, and they'll know what he's up to. And the last thing he wants on his record is a bad conduct discharge.

Go to the base Chaplin and explain the service is making you want to kill people and you might not be able to control it down the road. Depending on the acting job, he'll probably get a General or even Medical Discharge (if he gets referred to a shrink)

I had a friend in the Marines during the first desert skermish. A guy in unit or whatever it's called shot some sort of missle at a camel and blew it up. The US had him gone that day, I guess they take their camels very seriously there. He didnt get in any trouble and they discharged him with a general under honorable conditions. Not always, that's for sure. I've seen people go AWOL (In the Marines it's called UA), come back, serve time in the brig, and have their enlistment increased to cover the time they were away.

Keep in mind that anything less than an honorable discharge can affect future employement. While it won't stop him from working in Wendys, it will affect him when it's older. When I applied for a job at a local phone company, myself and a Marine buddy of mine had to include our discharge paperwork. My buddy was denied because he had a BCD discharge. Turns out working on the phone company may have included the need for security government clearance, and you cant' get that with a bad discharge.
