Not always, that's for sure. I've seen people go AWOL (In the Marines it's called UA), come back, serve time in the brig, and have their enlistment increased to cover the time they were away.
Keep in mind that anything less than an honorable discharge can affect future employement. While it won't stop him from working in Wendys, it will affect him when it's older. When I applied for a job at a local phone company, myself and a Marine buddy of mine had to include our discharge paperwork. My buddy was denied because he had a BCD discharge. Turns out working on the phone company may have included the need for security government clearance, and you cant' get that with a bad discharge.
