I've seen plenty of newsreel footage showing extremely grateful french people in the wake of liberation forces. My grandfather was at Juno beach (lost his hearing in the fighting soon thereafter) and had many stories of france and how he and his comrades were received. None of them involved being spat upon, unless it was a detail he left out when he tastefully glossed over the mad sexxing he got while in country.
