Why would Lensman put an image verification system in front of search that impacts 99% of the legitimate people that use search? I?m sure no one is going to to get upset about that.

The key to a successful GFY is to be accountable for the functionality and take care of the people that make site great. Users shouldn?t have to change the way they interact with the site. Apply your same logic to google.
The way it is right now, it impacts 100% of the legitimate people that use search in a much more annoying way than some simple image verification

It makse sense to me. Because ultimately, it's Lens's board. He makes the rules.
Lensman may be ok with SE's because the SE's give him enough back in order to justify allowing them to spider him. I would think this would work for anyone wanting to spider GFY... if it somehow made sense to Lens and was good for the board overall, why wouldn't he allow it?

So, if he says you can't spider his board, you can't. But he should be able to back that up with some tech skills as well.... because as Ray said, people overseas just assume wipe their ass with any legal documents you send them.

So true.

For a second there the searches were BLAZING fast. I was thinking they finally had a db specialist come in and hook everything up properly (and by that I mean hardware/software/db). I mean I tried a few searches with the most obscure things that wouldn't have been cached & the results just popped right up. Sick sick sick

I hope they can get themselves back to that point.

But there are plenty of answers to this problem.

If this were 12 months ago, I would have gladly explained some of them to you. I can't give away too many ideas away anymore though. I really wish I could, I enjoy GFY as much as the next guy.

I'll give you a clue though... even if you had image verification on the search 100% of the time, I don't think GFY members would give two fucks about it when faced with your alternative - no search at all.

Maybe you should do VB's image-verification based search as a temporary fix then? Since it's obviously a better solution than no search at all. No?

And this isn't google, so it's illogical to apply the same logic to it.

But maybe you should look to google for solutions for your problem.
This is not a technical problem. I understand you think yourself a great coder (if pontification made it so). We have a few around here as well.

We have a plan for GFY search. It's easy, and won't impact the user experience; however, it takes time to implement.

You, by your own admission above, know that there is more than one solution to these types of problems. You have described ONE WAY to fix this. I respect that. What you?re saying would work TECHNICALLY. If Lensman wants to go that route, then he will instruct us to do so. Until then, we continue to push forward with our plan to fix search. In the meantime, search will remain down as per the instructions of this boards owner while resources are directed at building the new search infrastructure.

I always look at things in the ?big picture? sense. I?m a geek by nature, but maturity and experience has proven that technical issues are not always resolved with technical solutions.

As per Google Search and GFY Search, isn't it kinda the same thing? Do you think google would lose market share if they put an image verification system on the front page of search? And required all users to use it before clicking on a "search"?

We will very soon. Things take time to implement. the same people that fixed the problem then are fixing the problem now.

I understand that search being down is impacting users worse than the perceived impact of an image verification system. The question we ask ourselves is the following....

"Do we want to use valuable resources to take a step backwards, to have to go back afterwards and fix the fix?"

The anwer we have made is no.

There's some fucked up logic in this thread. No wonder the search has been shaky for so long.

You're thinking inside the box Ray.

Google already has anti-spider protection built in to their engine. That is why I suggested for you to check out what their solutions are...

Your going to get one pissed off librarian and the cops will be on your ass for copying books that do not belong to you.
your struggling... library owns books, authors own reproduction rights to the text (stories). Neither apply here. GFY does not own your post (thoughts, words etc..) and you are not copy righting them either if anything you are doing the opposite by displaying them to the general public.

I just dont want people to think it was me nor my program who caused any of these issues/problems...if anything i'd like to think that i've helped out by providing a "FREE" service to members so that they dont need to spider the board(s).

if you think you make a post here and it is copyrighted then you are as dumb as everyone thinks you are. When someone PUBLISHES a book or magazine article or Associated press stories those are copyrighted. Also all of those things are sold to people, no one is purchasing anything here and Lensman does not own your post nor is he copyrighting it. People who post on public messageboards are not protected and they don't need your promission to copy your text and post it someone else. you really are clueless to this.

No one forced you to use it. As you notice dealing with 5 or 6 million posts is a challange for the crew of GFY admins...just imagine working with 12-14 million posts and having the ability to scale to hunreds of millions if not billions of posts.

As for my "failed" attempt of selling it why dont you search for the thread...ohh thats right you cant ... I turned down 10k offers you moron

When I type and express my words and thoughts they are my words and thoughts. Mine.
People buy ad space here.
Lens does own the post no. But he Keeps it under his roof err likes to or tries to. He knows the value of this think tank.

If ya know Copyright Law technically it does apply to the web medium to a degree. Even here.

Bottom line is. It's Lensmans house not yours, not mine and he can pick and choose whom or what will access this site.

I might not like it, you might not like it but it's his house.

Ya can bank on that.

This post is politically correct and also very contradicting.
Is it best to block the functionality to 100% of people? make a vote see what people want.. you rather block access to everyone while you looking for a solution than changing the way we interact with the site? doesn't make much sense.

The only thing which could hold any water is people writing scripts to use the search function to check for new posts which their keyword(s) were mentioned in, which has absolutely nothing to do with me nor search the boards...Yet isnt that exactly the type of service i provide and who those people running their scripts would rather use instead of killing the board weekly?

A SERVICE to generate alerts so that people dont need to keep hitting the GFY search function to generate their own alerts.. ohh the irony.. Currently there is 132 users monitoring 160+ different keyword alerts. Thats probably -20-50 people right there that arent running a script which uses the GFY search function...

Bank on what?

The itsy bitsy spider

Crawled up the water spout

Down came the rain

And washed the spider out

Out came the sun

And dried up all the rain

And the itsy bitsy spider

Crawled up the spout again.
