Cogent Bandwidth?
What's wrong with Cogent bandwidth? I've seen so many posts asking "Is it Cogent Bandwidth?" whenever somebody mentions a good hosting deal. Does Cogent's pipes go down often or someting?

i'm on cogentco since 6 months, downtime was around 30 minutes since then (routerissue..i guess it was a cogentco-problem)
i'm happy to pay only 50 cent/GB (~3400GB/month),so it was worth the try,and it saved a lot of $$$'s. ;-) |

I think the big issue people have with them is that they're having some financial problems, and there's also something to do with having as much bandwidth coming in as you have going out, or something like that.
As long as your host is on top of his game and has a back up plan in case cogentco pulls an excite@home and cuts people off, its fine for now. And its a fuck of a lot cheaper than anywhere else I've looked. I figure worst case scenario is if cogentco goes under then my host has to plug his network into another provider and I'll pay the same for bandwidth as everybody else. But for now I'll save the $$$ ![]() ------------------ Did somebody say Free Content? |

Thanks guys, I needed to know that info! You saved me a lot of money! Because (at least partially) of your response I will be able to start my free hosting service thanks to Cogent's 1gb per second for $20,000 deal!

"is that they're having some financial problems"
... today you wonīt find too many of them without any financial problems ..., cogent is ok, they only got a bad reputation because ISPīs that do not qualify for them are getting pissed off. ------------------ Don't innovate - imitate! ![]() [This message has been edited by funkmaster (edited 01-19-2002).] |

"If it's sounds too good to be true..."
heh, that pretty much sums it up. The only bad "solid" thing I have against them is quite of lot of their bandwidth is oversold, in that latency and throughput goes to the shitter if coming from some providers. I won't touch them with a 10 foot pole myself, but as long as a provider who uses them has enough non-cogent bandwidth via BGP or whatnot, I don't see too much of a problem. -Phil |

I'll echo that. You get what you pay for.
Why risk all your hard work, time, and stratagems on sktechy colo? I don't know anything about Cogent. This is not a statement against them, but it's always been my experience that price follows quality... or was it the other way around? Fro [This message has been edited by Fro (edited 01-19-2002).] |

Cogent has many problems, first, yes they are having a few money issues and will most likely not be around to much longer. Their connectivity from many router points sucks.
You do get what you pay for. If you just think about it it doesnt take a rockett scientist to see through the Cogent smoke. If it were even remotely possible to sell Quality bandwidth at their prices, then the Main providers (Level3, Verio, AT&T UUNet etc....) would be doing it. What I have been seeing lately is that the only people that say Cogent is ok are those cheapies using them, (usually the newbie free hosts). But the Big Guys that are not using them all agree that it's a bad deal, and these people can just as eaisly be using them, but choose not to...So that should tell you something. ------------------ Smiles [This message has been edited by askmomma (edited 01-19-2002).] |

FacialHost, the minimum you must commit to with them is a 100mb/s line for $3000.00 per month (with a yearly contract commitment). Their are also many bandwidth regulations with them in regards to incoming and outgoing bandwidth usages...
Now unless they have lowered their minimal contract (since last time I spoke with them)then what I said is true. ------------------ Smiles |

I bet in a year a similar topic will be up for cogentco... I believe they won't go down, they hold technology, so far the proved they can raise funds....stay tuned.

![]() He told me the reason everyone else was charging more was because they were still locked into bandwidth contracts that they signed the year before, and he dropped his prices because he just got out of his old contract. Just because it costs more doesn't mean its better, and just because the big boys aren't using it doesn't mean its not any good. ------------------ Did somebody say Free Content? |

Another good source for Cogent bandwidth is Host2Own.
For all the naysayers, there is a reason that cogent bandwidth is cheaper. One being that cogent owns their own network. Plus their network is based on fiber optics, not copper...which equals increased capacity per line. Just like conventional bw, there are good hosts and then there are bad hosts that oversell their lines, use inferior routers,... I have recently added a dedicated server connected to a dedicated cogent 10mbps line. On head to head tests (using tracert.com)against almost any of the hosts that regularily pop up on this board, my cogent sites perform admirably. |

Addition to my last message. I just took one of my sites and did a speed test against 7 other sites listed on al4a. (All with similar file sizes and number of graphics). I picked 10 locations from around the world to run the speed tests using the tracert.com speed-meter. The results - my site beat the connection and download times for 5 of the sites...2 sites beat my times.
I'll take proper research over heresay any day. |
