Planning on moving to Thailand....

what do I need to do too start preparing to move to Thailand? If I wanted to buy a condo there will they allow it if I'm a US citizen? Also, what areas would be good to fit into?

Try to get a visa...its not gonna be easy. I know a lot of people have to cross the border ever 3 months to get a temp visa.
Also youre not allowed to work there and its hard to legally own a house and stuff. You could buy a bar and have Thai people work for you..but i believe you arent allowed to move 1 chair yourself.

I believe you can own a condo there in buildings that have less than 50% ownership from foreign owners.

1) You need to get a visa. Tell them you are going to study Thai or some shitto get the year visa. Even then you will have to do a border run every 3 months. No problem, just run to Cambodia, Laos, Burma or where ever you want.

2) You need to pick up as much language as possible. The more you learn the better off your going to be because your already going to pay double for being a farang, but if you can "phud paasa Thai" you will save some money and know when your getting ripped off.

3) Be ready for a new way of life.

You CAN own a condo. It's the LAND you can not own. You do not need to be married to a Thai or have a Thai business or partnership to do this. If you want a HOUSE, then that is another story.

Pattaya (Jomtien) or Bangkok is best for first time farangs. But once you have been there for a while most guys move outside these areas and live DIRTY CHEAP. I suggest if you live in Pattaya to do so in Jomtien or you will probably fall into the whore machine near Walking Street and the surrounding Sois.

Have you been to Thailand? By your questions it sounds as if you have not. I suggest spending A LOT of time there before you pick up and move. Visiting there for a week and living there (or any country) are not the same.

Also... and this is very important: The last place you want to learn Thai is from a bar girl. Proper Thais can tell this and if you have any future business plans in Thailand, you want to speak proper Thai and not bar girl Thai. That would be like learning english from a hood rat and then trying to do business on wall street. It doesn't work and you will look like a fool and looked down upon.

Why do people announce they are going to move somewhere without having actually been there? Go there, check the place out, talk to people about the RE, laws, etc. Rent a place and see if you even want to live there. Then make a decision.

1) I told the guy to live NEAR the skytrain, but not right next to the whore areas. Why would you want to live in an area that is surrounded my whores, disfigured, beggars and all the hustle that comes with it when you can live in a cheaper and better area for less? If you live in that part of Sukhimvit Road your at ground zero. The skytrain has 16 stops and there are PLENTY of areas he could live in and live a normal life and not see a single whore asking him "where you go?" every time he leaves the house. If he wanted to party, he's just a couple minutes away on the train. Whores get old and living in the middle of it all would as well.

2) Language. Maybe you learned from a whore and do no real business in Thailand. If that's the case that's fine. But don't think for a second that a proper Thai does not know where you learned how to speak and that may be held against you some day if your trying to make a business power move in Thailand.

Thailand is about Buddhism, The Royal Family, social status and respect. Period. (Well, knowing the right people to get shit done never hurts) Speaking Thai learned from a Issan whore will lower your social status the moment you open your mouth. Trust me on this one.

None of this is rubbish. There are those who live in Thailand and then there are those who LIVE in Thailand. How you are perceived there or how you participate in the Thai lifestyle is up to you, but the more you learn about their culture and how it works, the better off your life is going to be. Learn their mannerisms, why they do certain things, what offends them and compliments them. Know that they have a smile for every feeling. Asian cultures, if you care to learn about them, are very complex. The more you learn about the Thai way of life, the better off you will be.

Yeah... you could always live in Un-Nut for 5000 Baht a month ($125 USD)
Or you could live out at Jatujak... for the same money.. they are both on the Skytrain... but you would be living in a single room.

Sure living around Sukhumvit and Silom is not $125 a month... but its the coolest zone ever... it got bars and restaraunts, english speaking folk.. fellow farangs...

Shit is it... i better remove my picture of Rama V and my buddhist symbols from the house. Funny i learnt most of my thai from Whores and Ferangs... and in my day to day meetings and conversations with Thai people i often find that speaking Isaan and Thai leads to many fair priced deals, opened doors, easy solutions to everyday problems... think about the fact that the security gaurds at your door are Isaan, your Cab drivers are mostly Isaan, the lady cooking Pad Thai is probably from Isaan, all the girls at the seven eleven are from Isaan, the guy at Central Chidlom selling TV's is from Isaan..... could i name more of the day to day people you deal with living in Bangkok (either in Asoke or Un-nut) that are from Isaan.

Anyway... Pattaya is another great option. It does not stink like Bangkok does and has some really great condos (with ocean view) for not too much money. Personally Bangkok gets old for me with all the hustle, smog and noise. You can also rent (long term) some BAD ASS houses there for pretty cheap.
