If you must live in Bangkok, which is a wonderful (and filthy) city, live near the skytrain so if you want to visit the above mentioned places and get around with ease you can, but stay out a little so you don't get raped on rent.

Also... and this is very important: The last place you want to learn Thai is from a bar girl. Proper Thais can tell this and if you have any future business plans in Thailand, you want to speak proper Thai and not bar girl Thai. That would be like learning english from a hood rat and then trying to do business on wall street. It doesn't work and you will look like a fool and looked down upon.
