Its sad.
They're even saying 20% of the players will retire before the NHL comes back, which means most of the superstars.

Lucky for me, I'm not a hocky fan.

These types of strikes kill the appeal for a sport. To this day, MLB hasn't fullly recovered.

Palfy, Bondra...both excellent players ( I know I cant spell...) but this is my thing...Markus Naslund is the best all around player and he gets his face on the box for playstation NHL 2005 and theres no season...sad but Markus is a devout Family man Christian and he can take it...as for the NHL...Its done, for good...hello WORLD LEAGUE...

NHL had done damage to itself in won't recover from for a generation - even in Canada. players should be shot for being sheep following Bob Goodenough whose strings are being pulled by the baseball players union head Donald Fehr.

anybody who puts any blame on the owners or Bettman is an idiot. it's been so obvious for years that NHL players are obscenely overpaid considering they have a small % of TV revenues the other big 3 pro sports leagues have.

the game sucked anyway - pretty much unwatchable until playoff time.

Agreed. Clearly the players are idiots. Here's some highlights from yesterday's negotiations:

"According to an NHLPA statement, Daly (the owners) began the process Monday by offering a $40-million salary cap without ''linkage'' - a fixed link between player costs and league revenues, which has long been the centrepiece of the NHL's bid for cost certainty."

"The union counter-offered with the $52-million team-by-team salary cap."

"Now the two sides are separated by $12 million on their cap figures. And with the rollback, two-thirds of the league's teams would be under $40 million."

A $52-million salary cap with many team payrolls under $40 million still allows for players to be signed to stupid overpriced contracts by teams that can afford to. It doesn't solve the LONG TERM problem which is why the Owners rejected it.

Great post! INCLUDING the last line.

The talent pool spread out amongst 30 teams means the skill level of the 2nd line players and down is horrible.

Anyone who watches International hockey knows the NHL game is goddamn boring nowadays.

My only fear is that the owners capitulate and the players get what they want. Then again, if that does happen, within 3 years they'll lose at least 6 teams, so the talent level should rise.

Don't EVEN get me started on these fuckers taking a career minor leaguer's job who's playing for the love of the game and to literally put food on his family's table, so they can "Stay in shape."

huh? Hmm, let me think. Who paid the players? Somehow I think the owners did, they make the agreement, they offer the $$$. If some team cant afford to pay a superstar, why the hell do they pay him? All of them are idiots with none economic knowledge. They want guaranteed profits now, it smells like communism to me.

Drop the amount of teams, shorten the season a bit, keep the league small, more teams will then have better players. They need to improve the product and package of Hockey there are alot of fans but fewer "die hards" than they think.

Hey moron, the players are at fault. They wasted all this time saying "No cap ever! No cap ever!" now they say Ok will have a cap. Why didn't they do this 8 months ago? They could have argued out the details of that cap for 2 months before the season started.

By the way if the owner had refused to pay those high salries the players would have sued for collusion like the MLB players did in the 80's. The MLB owners had to fork over $300 mil.

the players are only employees, always blame the owner of the company if it goes down

I think you have your facts wrong... see, the owners bought the players at a fair market price. That is like saying you didn't get what you deserved if you bought stock in a company that was about to tank when the tech bubble burst. If you don't know how to buy and sell, get out of being an owner (hint to Jerry Buss).

I think the league is dead. The owners will create a new league with new players and new rules(like max. wage, etc) from the start on.

We shall see, the NHL just upped their proposal to $42.5 million and called it their final offer and needs a decision by 11am tomm. Interesting to take a hard line like that when its so close to a deal.

I ran a Shuttle business for 3 years... It lost money every single year [wink][wink].

Go figure! But I still managed to pay the rent, buy a car and eat out 5 nights a week.

The only ones who aren't making what they should are the people in the front office who make it all happen.

Update: NHLPA rejects NHL's $42.5M cap and submits proposal for $49M. Gary won't take it but will he come back with another offer tomorrow a.m. or just shut the season down?
