Can you believe this - the registers want to CHARGE ME to get my HI-JACKED URL back

I'll copy the email I got from them - I'm in utter shock.

Response (Jessica) - 01/21/2005 10:08 AM
Hello,

I was sent this email from one of the Representatives from Directi. You will need to contact them so you can work with them to get your domain back. Probably what they will want you to do is pay for the transfer fee at a discounted rate and then once you do this, you can manage the domain there. After you get the domain back, you can then contact me, we will work on getting the domain back to Dotster.

***************
Hello Jessica,

A thorough search indicates the following domain names having transferred recently from Dotster:

easy-dater.com

Yes, you can ask the Registrants to directly get in touch with [email protected] and refer to their conversation with yourself and then we can work upon the previously discussed path of resolving this issue.

Cheers,

Hello,

We have contacted the current Registrar of the domain. They have sent the below option to get your domain back.

************************************************** ************************************************** *************************

From Directi:
This is what we can do in this case:

1. You ask the Registrant to provide us an E-mail Address which will be used as a Username for the Customer Control Panel [CCP]

2. We will allot a CCP to the Registrant to manage the domain name shinjukuseries.com

3. We will then apply Registrar Lock to this domain name and raise an Invoice of USD 6.99 to recover the Cost of Renewal of this domain name. This is will be done since the Customer who transferred this domain name will surely Chargeback [Dispute] the CC transaction. Of course, this price is much lower than our regular Customer's Cost for transferring domain names.

4. Once this Invoice is paid by the Registrant, we will remove Registrar Lock from this domain name and the Registrant may do whatever with his domain name.

************************************************** ************************************************** *************************

If you agree to these options, please let me know and I will set up a contact for you at Directi.

Response (Jessica) - 01/17/2005 05:15 PM
Hello,

We are in contact with the current Registrar and awaiting their response. Once they have contacted us, I will contact you with further details.

i can't belive they actually want me to pay them a few dollars to do this. I'm in complete shock at the utter stupidity of this, and it took them a WEEK to get this far.

I'd just pay it and then lock the domain down, and write the whole thing off as a lesson learned in not locking the domain down to begin with. And I'd be real fucking happy that I got the domain back.

Best advice for SleazyDream:

Pay your domains in time and have a valid e-mail address at the registrar.
Lock you domains.
Try to be a little more polite at the boards. A lot of enemies won't help you.

The main thing is to ensure the daomain is fully back in your control - Paying the small fee will make sure this happens smoothly.
Once all that is sorted, fight them for compensation, especially as it looks like the registra could well be at fault.

Whichever - I am happy to see you got this stuff sorted out pretty quickly - Having been the victim of Eastern European scam merchants in the past (Which cost me about 500 recurring members due to these bastards hacking into my ccbill webmaster stats and cancelling memebers out, and also stealing domains from me), I know how you feel.

pay whatever to get it back, suck it up, it was your mistake to begin with for not locking your domains...as much as I don't agree with the transfer rules now, there will always be asshole scammers that try and do this shit...it is up to you to protect your ass, and if you are lazy and don't do it, then it is as much your fault as it is the scammer that fucked you

Everybody should contact ICANN, maybe they will require better safeguards from the registrars if they get enough complaints. You can send comments & suggestions to [email protected]

But please keep it professional. Sending what looks like rantings of a child won't do anything but harm to the point you're trying to make.

You can also file a problem report against individual registrars. ICANN can't solve it, but they do monitor problem reports to see trends. So show them a trend people.

Wow, that seems impossibly corrupt, even for Directi. They've got enormous balls.

As someone else suggested, moving back to Dotster doesn't seem that smart anyway. There were several other hijackings from Dotster since this incident, and accusations that it was not just the fault of unlocked domains. I received a message from Dotster last night that they were immediately locking all domains, but it seems to me like they're trying to imply that unlocked domains was the main cause, without answering accusations of multiple flaws in their security. It's possible that Sleazy and the other victims screwed themselves with bogus email contacts or ignoring transfer requests, but I kind of doubt that, and if it were true, I'd think Dotster would say so...in their message they didn't even acknowledged that domains were hijacked from them, they just said domain hijacking reports are "widespread across the internet," and that there have been several attempts to hijack domains at Dotster. As I see it, reports of domain hijacking *from dotster* are widespread, with larger registrars having fewer problems.

I think there were two hijackings reported from DirectNIC in the past week. At least one anyway, a high-traffic gallery site reported on GFY.

Whoops, the gallery domain I thought was jacked from Directnic was jacked from Register.com. Directnic lost one belonging to antihotlinking.com...they didn't say which domain, but here's AHL's synopsis:

"It has come to our attention that approximately 2 days ago one of our domains has been stolen due to severe negligence on the part of our domain registrant DirecNic. This domain was used for license authorization of AHL (AntiHotLinker). Thus, for those clients who restarted their Apache web server in the last 2 days AHL has stopped protecting movies."

Registerfly lost a couple recently as well, for anyone keeping score...not sure if they're an eNom subsidiary or reseller, but I think they're connected somehow.

That sucks man... I think DNIC is still the best choice tho because they offer good support (right?). Seems like no registrar is safe anymore

DirectNIC does have a reputation for responsive support, and that's been my experience. Personally they're not among my top picks for security, but I haven't used them enough lately to know their current situation in detail, so my opinion isn't especially well-informed.

While no registrar is safe, some are substantially more vulnerable than others. I think all the registrars who are losing domains would do well to publicly explain how it's happening and what they're doing to address the situation - whether it's more the fault of the registrars, or more the fault of the domain owners. In some cases it's a combination...registrars may meet the minimum standards required by ICANN, but there's a lot more they could do.
