Well, all I can say is why don't you pick up the phone and give her a call and talk to her, after she gets up from sleeping all day while her five children sat perfectly quiet on the sofa allowing her to do so. I'm a mother myself, used to work midnights..had to get off them though...no way in hell could I sleep with my kids running through the house waking me up every 5 minutes

I know she has had a lot of family related challenges in her life in the past 2 years. Everybody goes through shity periods where a lot of things hit you all at once and its hard to stay focused and your business suffers as a result.

Like I said though in my prior post, I'm a very satisfied customer. I did close to a $1000 worth of business with her and got everything she promised.

Sheesh KRL I never said the person was not a good designer, never said they didn't have a ton of very satisfied customers. My one and only point was that unless you have actually met someone in person, spent some time with them can you then say for sure that the person is indeed who they are in person.

Example: Juicy....I don't think anyone here can say Juicy is not Juicy....you see his pics..you see him at the shows...everyone recognizes his face...knows how he jokes around. Now take me? I am female, but do you really KNOW I am female? You can call me up right this very moment and a girl would answer the phone and talk to you about this thread...but is that person the person that posted?

I have been on the net a very long time and I have seen it all. I used to work for a large online place that has chat etc. There was the woman, single, alone, broke, pregnant with twins....everyone went through her trials..her heartaches....we sent money her way...we sent gifts for the soon to be born twins...she had her twins premature...they ended up dying...she couldn't afford to bury them....everyone coughed up money to help her. Sad story...even more sad is the fact her twins never died because she was never pregnant in the first place.

Then there is the college student with the brain tumor...(really a lonely 35 year old married stay at home mom with kids). Then my friend from Australia...fell in love online...talked to his online girlfriend on the phone all the time....they decided to each sell their homes and buy a larger one in Aussieland where she would come...and they would get married. He put his house up for sale....she had trouble selling hers...one thing after another...the deals never went through...he had to get out of his house...so he went in major debt to get their dream home...because her house WOULD sell...but then the horror of all horror happened....her sister emailed him and told her she died...it was a tragic accident. He flew out to say her goodbyes...he was stunned to find her alive and kicking and her husband not too happy about what his wife had done....and so he flew back home to the house he could not afford and thought "is anyone online REAL'. True stories I encountered...but then again...you don't know me...maybe I'm lying.

i have and the same problem with her.
prepaid her for some work before christmas.
Sent her something small to do which she did.
Sent her some more work waited a few days needed it so had someone else do it instead.
Got an email back about email problems and icq problems.
Asked for the psd's for the work that has been done.
Havent got those yet
I figure her internet is fucked up.
I dont see a reason she would not send me the psd for what she did even if she had no time to do other work i need done.
I figure sooner or later she will get her internet fixed and i will get some work done for the $$$ i prepaid.

She does some nice jobs. But I moved my jobs away from her as well(november) It simply took weeks longer then promised. I paid in advantage. But she refunded ALL my money. So no hard feelings. I just guess she could use a better schedule

Hope she okay. On another forum, I read that she was having a really hard time, and checks were bouncing left and right, and she was about to loose her car and house right around Christmas time, but she didn?t want hand outs?just honest work. Hopefully, she just back logged from all the work she received from that post and is trying to catch up.

Who knows, I know last week my DSL modem blew up along with my router and my c drive. Lost three days of work and spent some money buying new a modem (free one?to be shipped out 3-5 working days), router, hard drive and paying a company to extract information off the bad hard drive. And I spent a day installing the operating system, reloading programs and clients work. If this happened to Tootie who is already strapped for money and behind on projects, would we believe her or just say another designer excuse?

Sometimes, it hard to answer an email or pick up the phone to tell the client who prepaid that shit happens but the project will get done, and one tends to ignore emails while trying to finish the project. Hope this is the case and not that she and her children are on the streets.

Don't be to quick to judge...she is a good designer and something may of happened that she is not able to post. Who knows maybe rent money to keep her children safe came before internet connection bill?

I hope she and her children are safe. Unlike other people here, she never asked for a dime nor did major posters start a donation thread for her.

She seems broke around christmas thats why i prepaid her for some work figuring she needed the $$$ but i cant wait weeks to get things done.

Tootie was broke last Christmas too. I remember she posted on several boards that her children would not be getting anything for Christmas. She has been saying at least since June she is about to lose her house. Yet, she has also said that she works 14 hours a day, 7 days a week designing. If you work that many hours as a designer for that long a period of time and you are constantly broke then you have two choices. Get the husband to get a job, or lower your lifestyle. Most people go through difficult times, but as a parent sometimes you have to think about what is best for the family rather than what is best for you. If designing isn't enough to support her family and she can't get out of the rut, something has to give.

first let me just say that i dont know Tootie, but i have thrown some work her way from people who wanted to know if i knew any honest & good designers around. just want to point that out before i make my point:

if you're running a business, as she cleary is/does, then you should always have a backup way to contact all your clients and/or interested clients to keep them informed about THEIR money & work that is supposed to be getting done. if shes sick, in the hospital, about to lose her house/car ....whatever....you tell someone, to go to the library (where they have free internet access) and try to email SOMEONE to post on the boards whats up (if she cant access her normal email).

Where theres a will, theres a way.

I hope all is well with her, but not responsding to emails and icq's for weeks is just plain riduculous, in my opinon. Yes, we all have hard times, but that doesnt mean you cant get a hold of SOMEBODY to deliver a message on your behalf.

Understand your position and I hope your work will get done. I know that in the past I fell behind, and didn't know how to respond, but I did extra work and never billled out the balance. I work 50/50 or 1/3-1/3-1/3 for payment depending on the project. I felt okay with this but a few clients didn't and learn my lesson.

Tootie just seems like an honest poster not to screw others with design. I am assuming that she has no internet connection. Who knows, but she is a good designer that seems to have bad luck. I just hope that she and her kids are not living on the streets. And wonder why her husband couldn't get one or three jobs to provide for their children while their mother was busting her ass doing cheap design jobs.

Not saying that your job was cheap, just saying that maybe she couldn't avoid things. Or then again a Christmas scam, I doubt it.

My DSL modem blew up. My dial up connection took 15 minutes to load GFY and timed out plus my email due to all the spam. ICQ wasn't much better. Thank someone that I have call waiting on my telephone line or I would have never been able to contact the new client.

Hey if you don't have a local friend, it is really hard to conduct porn business on the internet without a cpnnection. A lot people here post that they are at cafe, posting. I went to the local Star Buck with my Mac laptop and GFY was blocked plus some of my email accounts. I was able to read the news there and get my mail from mainstream accounts while drinking a 2.35 cup of coffee that tasted like shit.

Wow, I was offline for a few days trying to get caught up and I come back to a post like this. Yikes.

Well, first of all, I've posted a few times that I was sick with pneumonia right before Christmas. As a result, I'm way behind. I am not currently accepting any new clients until I get caught up, which means I have no income. I can't believe how far I can get behind just being sick for a few weeks! It's not the easiest thing to run a business by yourself, especially one like the design business, because I have no one to take over the work if I get sick.

I have also posted several times that I am NOT going to be online on ICQ and I will also NOT be able to check my e-mail every single day. The day after I got back online to get to work I had so much e-mail and so many ICQ messages that I spent 7 hours responding to them and I got NO work done. That's not doing ANYONE any good.

I HAVE to get caught up.

Something that I have realized lately is that all these designers that just suddenly seem to "disappear" off the face of the earth.. perhaps some of them don't do it to scam, maybe some of them just get behind because of illness or something and they just can't seem to get caught up so they run away because the don't know how to deal with it. I mean, when you're a solo act, a one-man or one-woman operation and you get sick or have a death in the family, you have no options. And of course everyone has the attitude that no designer ever REALLY gets sick and it's all a bunch of excuses so we can run off an party in Tahiti or something, but I have a family that I care about and I don't have that luxury. Getting sick is something I PRAY won't happen, because I can't afford to get sick.

I could do that. Run, I mean. I have NO money and NO assets, so it's not like anyone could take anything from me if anyone caught up with me. But I'm not a scammer, I'm not a liar, I'm not a thief. I am a VERY responsible mother who loves her children dearly and I am a business-woman who cares VERY much about her business and her reputation. So while I could run away and hide and never come back, I have a family that I have to support and a conscience that wouldn't let me do that anyway.

That said, I am really, really far behind. I can't stay in constant contact with everyone, it's costing me several precious hours a day that I should be spending designing and getting caught up. I've made some good progress lately and I'm not about to give up now. I'm going to continue to be mostly unavailable until I get caught up because I HAVE to. I don't like to do this. I would like to stay in contact with everyone. But I just can't. Even sending out one five minute e-mail a day to everyone who contacts me is a time "luxury" at the moment. I do still have a house and children to care for daily in addition to working so hard to get caught up.

Now, Brad, I was told by you last week that you wanted me to have your sites completed by the 18th. I had a couple of clients in line before you, but since you were so adament about the deadline of the 18th, I pushed you ahead of the line and I told you that I would not be able to keep in contact with you if you wanted the sites done by then because I would need to stay offline and work on them. I have been working on them and I do still expect to have them done by then. I have received a couple of e-mails from you telling me that I have missed the deadline, but according to my calander it just turned the 17th a few hours ago. I'll be heading to bed in a few minutes, but I still have some time before your deadline has passed and I've already made so much progress.

Actually, I just looked at the e-mail you sent again, and it appears that you said "Friday January 18th 2004". When I received your e-mail I put Jan. 18th down as the deadline and I didn't notice that it is neither 2004, nor is the 18th on a Friday. But that would be why you haven't received your sites yet, because the deadline you gave me in the e-mail was indeed January 18th, even if in the year 2004 (when I didn't even know you.)

It's just a typo and a miscommunication, and I'll have the sites done for you by the 18th, just as the e-mail requested.

I don't have all that much left before I am caught up, but for the next few days until I'm caught up on my list, and I stress this because I've said it several times recently and people don't seem to be seeing the message, I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BE IN CONSTANT CONTACT WITH ANYONE. I'm so, so, SO very sorry that my illness has caused any of my clients any grief and I AM going to get caught up and back to business as usual, but I implore you to all be patient just a little while longer. Pass this on to anyone you see asking for me. Let people know that I have NOT disappeared and that I'm working so very hard to get caught up and I will be soon. I just need some patience for a little while longer.

I've never heard of someone coming to the boards to bitch even BEFORE a designer MET their deadline. It might have been more appropriate for you to wait and see if the deadline was even met. Cripes. Hey Tootie... thanks for the clarification but I would LOVE you to confirm you've received my payment of $1500 I've sent on December 28th.

I mean, at that time I did not feel like you were over-booked at all... you said a few a your clients did not pay and disappeared, etc... so it looked as if you were looking for work. I've sent you emails/ICQs in the last week to know if you got the $1500 and received nothing back.

If you think it takes a lot of time to reply "Yes I got it but I'm booked as of now, I will contact you back as soon as possible, within 2-3 weeks" it would have save me a lot of time trying to contact you, searching on the boards to see if you are still alive or not.

I mean it's a business and it works BOTH ways. If you pay someone $1500 you expect to receive at least confirmation that the money has been received. Imagine I did not see this thread today... I would have probably contacted my bank and my lawyer or something... taking me a lot of time and problems just because you are ignoring the emails.

TIP: Get yourself an email management script and send an announcement to all your active clients at least once per week if you don't want them to panic and send you dozen of messages. You create the problem by not responding at all.

Oh BTW, I don't need the work done before 2 months... so no stress here. I Just want you to confirm it's PREPAID. There's nothing I hate more than sending money then... nothing.

I did not post all the details of this situation to be fair to Tootie, but seeing this post calling me impatient makes me want to defend myself.

This job was originally supposed to take 2 weeks (as estimated by Tootie) and be finished around December 15th. The Jan 18th deadline was a final deadline before I was to demand my refund.

I should also note I did not come here to bitch about the deadline not being met I came to bitch about the lack of communication that is upsetting more clients than just me.

Ultimately I got what I needed out of this thread, a public response from Tootie promising my sites be finished tomorrow. If everything comes together as I hope and trust they will, I will be another happy client of Tooties.

It sounds like the main problem is lack of communication on Tootie's part. Not many designers are PREPAID for their work. Most either get paid at the end, or they get paid a partial amount up front and the rest upon completion.

It appears that many people, seeing and hearing how broke she always is prepaid her in an effort to help out her financial situation. I think this is very nice of the people involved. From the sounds of the amount of work she has taken in, the vast quantities of it, she accepted a great deal of money, which you would think would be able to cover her bills. It appears she got sick with pneumonia, but pneumonia once on antibiotics is a short term illness. You feel like crap for a week or so but are not bed ridden (My daughter has had pneumonia 12 times so I have a great deal of experience with the illness). Problems arose when Tootie felt that her first priority was to complete work rather than informing her customers of how long it would take to complete their designs or even that she received the money they sent her in good faith. It is good business to communicate with clients and if a customer is still asking after 3 weeks if she even got the money there is a problem.

My suggestion would be to take the time out and email every client that is waiting for work, even if it is just a form email and state you are behind by so many days/weeks. That their work WILL get done and you DID receive payment for the work and thank them for their extreme patience.

I personally don't like seeing customers who have PREPAID for work being given a hard time because they are unable to get any information regarding their order. Tootie accepted their money, apparently spent their money, so it is only right she could at least give them some idea as to when they might be receiving what they paid for.
