Honestly, ev1 probably cant legally do anything, unless they investigate who is hosting and find that the guy is using phoney info to even get hosted.

I have about 15 servers at ev1, if I thought it would help I would contact them, but in reality they will want proof or tell you that your battle is dotster. adware isnt illegal, but spam complaints may get him pulled which may not be a bad idea, flooding ev1 with phoney spam complaints would get him pulled.

it totally sucks but im just trying to give you the honest opinion and tomorrow will seem like one of the longer days youll have...i would take krl's info and go that route asap.

Amazing how many in this busniess can;t manage that. Keep ie updated AND the right security settings and you rarely if ever pick nasty crap up. Lucky to have Smokey and KRL plus others lending a hand on this. Would have been nice to have Choker in your corner too. When it comes to stuff he is concerned about, he knows the technical issues cold. Don't know if he is guru level in Domain transfers and hijacks or not? He does own more than plenty of them and has to deal with scams all the time.

Think those few sentences made a point. I don't want to hijack the thread into that drama again, but needed to make that point. Don't read this into choker did it.

Last time something like this came up, I checked to make sure all mine were locked. Like you say still you're not safe. Good note to all! I'll say it again. CHECK TO SEE YOUR DOAMINS are locked.

Geeze this sucks. And the $400 is inconsequencial if the toolbars are of the type that can be remotely updated. Kill as many sponsor accounts involved in the initial heist as you want but later the person can enter a "legit" sponsor relationship to serve their thousands of toolbars

As far as the host goes, they are based in Texas which is not exactly a part of the world sympathetic to that sort of thing. You might give the host a deadline (or have your attorney give them a deadline) to have the site down by before you contact the host's local authorities. No host should continue hosting a site that obviously contains malware once they have been made aware of it as, once put on notice, they can be held responsible in a lot of places for abetting its distribution and I'm pretty sure Texas is not a good place to be pulling that sort of thing.

To put it lightly this hurt me BADLY. No i'm not bankrupt, I have many ventures, but this one was basically whipped out and I can't even get ahold of either registar to do anything about it - i have to sit here till monday loosing everything i built up to this THEIF. Life goes on.

So here's what REALLY pissing me off though. I find the web host the hijacker used and is sending all my traffic though. I tell them about the hijack and I know - to them it's "he said she said" but here's the thing, I told them a lawsuit will occur and i know that up to this point they really didn't know anything about this, but now that they do know and the hijacker has 5 auto installs (nasty ones too) and FALSE WHO IS info (obviously false too) on the urls so please take down the urls. That is immediatly undisputable and reason to suspend an account and take a page down. I get a bit of a run around and then finally get an email from them that says

"I have contacted the server administrator and asked him to remove the domain for the time being until the situation is resolved.
Hopefully he will be able to take care of this shortly, but I was unable to reach him by phone. I will let you know when we hear back from him."

ok - this ADMITS they agree the site needs to come down, but WHAT THE FUCK? They have 24/7 teck support - HOW FUCKING SIMPLE IS IT TO PULL THE GOD DAMN PLUG on this site? It's got false who is and over 5 nasty autoinstalls on it - a no brainer to cancel this account. It's still up - it's been several hours now since I got that email. Needless to say I'm MORE than pissed.

There have been several instances of server hacking recently and if many of you go through your server logs carefully, you will probably find you have also had guys trying to find their way in to load this iframe scumware.

If the surfer is screwed at every turn in the adult market, he will end up going back to buying magazines - Tho I guess some Russian will find a way of getting a trojan to pop out of those, too!

Only Registrar-Lock protects one from bogus Registrar Transfers. Account passwords, etc are meaningless in this context - they only protect one's account at their current domain registrar.

The new domain registrar is who makes the transfer request - this is the step, in which one would assume logically, the "losing" domain registrar would be required to confirm the request, etc ... but the system does NOT work like that ... if the domain transfer isn't explicitedly rejected, it happens AUTOMATICALLY!

To make matters worse, a recent ICANN policy change Nov-12-2004 strongly discourages "losing" registrars from requiring any email acknowledgement from the registrant ... so now, not only do domain transfers happen automatically unless explicitely canceled (this part has long been true), the registrant need not be notified at all!

Oh, and hang on tight for the best way to "hijack" domains still isn't widely used yet ... which way is that ... by using the Whois Data Problem Reports System ... now one can actually get grab many nice domains they want, often LEGALLY!

Fortunately, WDPRS still isn't widely known by domain hijackers, but be aware this is a security hole EVEN BIGGER ... because NOT even Registrar Lock protects one's domains from being deleted in as little as *15 days* and subsequently registered by someone else (ie. the hijacker, etc). Ie. A missing country-code in the phone number field is a legitimate reason to file a Whois Data Problem Report - everyone has their correct country code in their Whois, right? LOL! ... point is many domains are vulnerable to this type of attack.

As far as the host goes, they are based in Texas which is not exactly a part of the world sympathetic to that sort of thing. You might give the host a deadline (or have your attorney give them a deadline) to have the site down by before you contact the host's local authorities. Account passwords, etc are meaningless in this context - they only protect one's account at their current domain registrar. The new domain registrar is who makes the transfer request - this is the step, in which one would assume logically, the "losing" domain registrar would be required to confirm the request, etc ... but the system does NOT work like that ... if the domain transfer isn't explicitedly rejected, it happens AUTOMATICALLY! To make matters worse, a recent ICANN policy change Nov-12-2004 strongly discourages "losing" registrars from requiring any email acknowledgement from the registrant ... so now, not only do domain transfers happen automatically unless explicitely canceled (this part has long been true), the registrant need not be notified at all! Oh, and hang on tight for the best way to "hijack" domains still isn't widely used yet ... which way is that ... by using the Whois Data Problem Reports System ... now one can actually get grab many nice domains they want, often LEGALLY! Fortunately, WDPRS still isn't widely known by domain hijackers, but be aware this is a security hole EVEN BIGGER ... because NOT even Registrar Lock protects one's domains from being deleted in as little as 15 days and subsequently registered by someone else (ie. the hijacker, etc). Ie. A missing country-code in the phone number field is a legitimate reason to file a Whois Data Problem Report - everyone has their correct country code in their Whois, right?
