IF countries knew about tsunami coming, was it right not to try to inform the coast?

the ufo thread really got me thinking. why the heck didn't they put it on tv/radio/loudspeakers from planes/etc to save as many as possible?

Something is extremely fishy and strange with this whole lack of warning uniformly in all the countries that got impacted. I could see one or two fucking up, but all them and the EU, Japan, and the US fucked up also??

Sorry but if it looks like shit and smells like shit, it usually is shit.

what are you talking about ? ? the Thai autorithies and other countries that were hit were properly informed by the US , no fuck ups happened there

the local authorities then decided to do nothing because of fear of it being a hoax and being bad for tourism ,

even if they did want to inform everyone, they had no way of doing it in a timely manner ,

the only country in that region that is prepared for something like that is Japan

They should have made every effort to make sure as many people were as safe as possible...

These arent the most technologically advanced countries in the world, even with proper warning, which would only be a couple of hours at best I believe, what could these countries do. Could they really evacuate the people, the ensuing panic would cause lots of destruction, and would they even be able to evacuate a considerable portion of the population out of harms way.

Even if they received warning in advance how much would the impact of the waves have been minimized?

From what I understand the countries that got hit didn't have a warning system in place because it's extremely expensive.

Did find this on CNN:
"Although National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii issued tsunami warnings as soon as they heard of the huge earthquake off Sumatra, the waves outran communications at jet speeds of 500 mph (804 kph) - catching hundreds of thousands of people unaware."

They didnt know it was going to be as big as it was, nor is there any way to reach the masses on the coast, most of the places are hardly above 3rd world outside the resort fences.

Well, those countries that got hit are not exactly well off. So many do not have TVs/radios/phones. BT i'm sure they had warning alarms and things like that.

It's only half reasonable when you look at the excuses used.

I had a dinner at the Sri Lankan embassy tonight and the consul was mighty upset over that nothing, absolutely nothing was being done to warn people.

There were pretty many hours from when the Tsunami hit the Thai coast to when it hit Sri Lanka. It didn't take very long to figure out that it was destroying everything in it's path. There's even american gov offices in both Thailand and Sri Lanka, and the americans knew about it. Why didn't they contact the government?

I heard so many sad and horrible stories at the dinner. The devastation there is total

As much as the U.S. is technologically advanced, only the west coast has tsunami warning devices in place, the east coast doesn't and if there was a quake in the Atlantic, think how fucked up the whole east coast of the United States is going to be after a 9.0 quake.

Here's the kicker, it would cost less than $12 million a year put this system into place and keep it operational.

Blows my mind when I think the amount of money we're blowing hourly in Iraq when we could be making better use of the money stateside.

The US notified 24 countries of the quake and probable tidal waves. Apparently none of the countries responded well. In the case of at least one country they chose not to respond at all...because they did not want to interrupt the tourist season.

The very same consul would have been mighty upset if there had been a warning and no tsunami had come. South-East Asian officials are pretty much useless - 95% of them have bought themselves into their positions and their main interest is to put as much money as possible into their own pockets as long as they have these positions. I have lived in one of these countries for eight years, so I know pretty much what I'm talking about.

The problem is that we are talking of a coastline of several thousands of kilometers. Without a warning system in place, and given the conditions especially in very poor areas like Aceh/Indonesia and Sri Lanka there would not have been no way to alarm a large amount of people.
