is it wrong to celebrate turn of the year...

this year.

because of the chaos in Sri Lanka , India and the Philipines ?

my Gf is against celebrating this year.

but my opinion is : no year is without bad things , catastophes or death so you can`t celebrate any year

With the recent disaster we have all the more reason to celebrate all the things we are thankful for. Happy newyears everyone..

I'm not in a very cheery mood. So I'm not celebrating it this year.
I will be spending it on a bus going to the Sri Lanka embassy 8 hours away. Will be helping them for 3 days packing and sorting supplies that will be shipped to Sri Lanka.

Why would it be wrong? The situation wont get better because you dont celebrate this year.

Do what you can, donate some money and go out to have some fun.
A lot of peoples lost their lives and its very sad of course, but I dont think that should stop you from living your life.

I think you should respect your girlfriend's feelings. Some people will celebrate the new year, and they can't be faulted; life is short. Some just won't feel there's anything to celebrate right now and that's OK too.

If you don't celebrate the turn of the year because of the disasters that year, I say it's stupid because alot of disasters happen every year and imo you must also take time to celebrate the good things in life.

edit: but I would understand if your girlfriend lost someone because of it.

Yes, it's much better to go with "lots of people died so I'm going to mope around and feel miserable for a long time" rather than "wow, you could die at any time. I guess they were right when they said you should live today like there's no tomorrow"

Yeah, it was a tragedy.... but unless you were directly affected by it (someone you know died), then I'd say just learn from it and do what ever makes you happy today because tomorrow.... a 500km/h wave might show up... you just don't know.

If you are unable to be there to help out, if you're unable to make any real difference and you're not directly affected by it.... then just learn from it. It's much more productive than crying in your cereal.

I dont think its wrong, but personally I'm depressed and I won't go out like most celebrate a day with no significant meaning.

com·pas·sion

1: a deep awareness of and sympathy for another's suffering
2: the humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it

Lots of people lack it here.

My girlfriend was feeling bad too that we plan to celebrate new years tonight but like I told her, we can celebrate for a different reason. Reason being that we celebrate that we are alive and ok and thankful that nobody we know was killed in this catastrophe

You should celebrate it and get as much fun out of life as you can now, these natural disasters are proving the point you could go at any time....

That's why I never plan to be one of those people who will work hard for 40 years to enjoy a retirement....or invest in any longterm bonds and stuff like that.

Why *maybe* get to enjoy later what I could enjoy now

i agree, i think if you go against your girlfriend's wish this time i'll probably be against you in the long run. Its not just an ordinary bad thing, its something that the whole world has its eyes on this.. So you better not hurt her feelings i guess
