Exactly! Not to mention International Flights. When I was in Europe I went to about 10 countries in the span of time if would have taken me to go from Fla to Ca.

I am not going to place my personal stamp of approval on the entire piece or associated insulting tone, but I do agree that on many levels, US citizens do not understand the rest of the world.

I have traveled all over the world: The deeper you go into the third world, the less you find americans and the more you find Europeans. I once heard that only 20 percent of US citizens hold a passport and it would stand to reason that much less out of that number actually use it.

The voting polls would change significantly if people traveled to the third world.

Now you're all assuming that people SHOULD be fluent with the ways of the world, and that if they haven't travelled they are ignorant to the world.
Who says most people give a shit enough to travel, let alone LEARN about another country.

Who sets the standards and says "if you don't learn 2 languages and travel to 22 different countries by the time you're 37 you're an ignorant american"
I am sorry, but you guys are arguing for the sake of arguing.

Some people just want to live their lives pay taxes and live in Texas their whole lives and never even leave their state. That makes them ignorant? I'm sure NO ONE anywhere else in the world does something like that, right? *rolls eyes*

I also got a pretty nasty bacterial infection at the Garlic Rose on La Cienega, Beverly Hills, Ca.

Getting sick while traveling is certainly no myth, but many US citizens seem to think that third world countries rely on "spinning" to fuel the economy and are unsanitary with food and water. They eat it as well. Montezema's Revenge has its name for several reasons, one of which is very fitting

This impression of the world is one reason the Chinese will take over within 20 years. US citizens are under the impression that Asia is full of rickshaws.

I would eat at a dive in Asia or South America...Africa....

What you Euro idiots dont get is as Baddog stated it.

In Europe, you can get in your car, travel for an hour or two and you are in a different country.

In America, you have to order a plane ticket a couple weeks in advance, pay a bit over a grand, then dirve for an hour or two just to get to the airport, bitch your way through long ass lines, then spend 14 fucking hours on a plane just to get to a different country.

Its just not fucking worth it.

This, in my opinion, is a great argument if you are arguing "why do Europeans tend to travel more frequently..." But case in point, how or why really do not change the end result.

They don't travel as much.

What are you talking about.

If you argue that americans are ignorant because they dont travel and take in other countires as often as europeans, then saying that americans dont have the same oppertunity to travel as much as europeans is a perfect counter-arguement

Exuse all my spelling mistakes, i type fast.

No worries on spelling, I am not a good speller either

No, I am not arguing that. Europe is smaller and easier to navigate. If you want to go anywhere, you pretty much need to cross a border. Until recently, I believe, you needed a passport to go anywhere.

That said, they get used to traveling so they are more apt to travel further. But I am not arguing that US Citizens are not as intelligent, just in some cases, less cultured.

That make more sense?

Yeah - Im a proud American - but someone missed a whole bunch in that first post - the travel part - well - thats not real important

The fact that 98% of Americans still think that Columbus was the one that said the world is round is a real good example of the watered down education Americans get - and of course knowing history (just like in this biz) is a real good way to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
Try educating yourself on the real history of why Hitler was able to take power and how exactly he did it - you might be real surprised to find out some recent correlations
Try finding out why you should be proud to be an American instead of fucking putting a bumper sticker on your car - I did my time in the military in the War - back then we sat waiting for the Americans trying to get the war stopped cause we were just fodder - then 35 years later we're doing the same thing again yet very few people can see the fucking same thing happening cause they dont know their own damn history - get a real life and learn your own heritage - then worry about travelling - there's some great countries out there.
As far as the getting the squirts and runs in foreign countries - its because Americans have to have everything antiseptically clean - their bodies never get a chance to defend against the little bugs in other countries water and food. Course the insurance companies and medical conglomerates love it cause they keep buying and promoting the cleaning products companies to make sure there isnt one germ left on the kitchen counter - hell if it weren't for so much cleanliness is next to godliness we've been doing for 40 years now - we wouldnt need medical insurance for most stuff
Back to you wanna-be patriots - when you serve your country in the armed forces during a war and see the carnage up close - come back and we'll talk a little about history

No thanks, I like America, where we shit IN toilets, and pull out fruit and veggies from fields. Not the other way around.

Also the US is bigger than Europe so an American that travled from Seattle to Miami would have traveled father than some "enlighten" European that traveled Norway to Greece.

I would have to agree with you there. The average home in my area goes for about 1.2 Million, although I can drive 90 miles north of here and hit Compton with the homies.

lol

Why don't you drive up there, I guarantee thats a different "culture" for you. Some of you people are so stupid, you hate America, just to hate it. I must have missed the I hate America bulliten.

Odd comment Gator - in the midst of all this bs and hate shit :-)

I know of one US person right now sitting in a jail cell in the US for nada reason... or a reason that just would not exist in any other western country. And.. this person ain't no drug dealer, arms trader, murderer nor even assaulted anyone. In fact, the complete opposite and served the US well for.. over 20 something years. Nice to have friend who support ya in the middle of shit eh? :-)

So much for human rights....

I think the point Baddog is trying to make in comparing the size of the US and the size of Europe is that if you are low on funds you can still travel through Europe and visit many other countries for instance using something like a Eurail pass if they still have those.

However for an American to decide they want to travel on the cheap it takes a much bigger committment to visit other countries continents.

$1,000's even.

I've done a lot of US travel and have lived in many different states and just my brief excursions about the US have broadened my thinking to some degree. I can imagine travelling the world would just be astounding. But once again it can definitely be cost prohibitive for us.

I've been lucky to a degree Eros.. but that was a deliberate intention and been all over - thanks a lot to the net! :-)

It opened my eyes plenty when travelling - some things you never ever thought about in your life :-) Least for me, I've become far more aware, even when looking inwards to my own country of birth.

It is also an education, least in my experience, how damned hospitable people are, often when they are not exactly wealthy - they seem to have higher values sometimes than you would expect. There is just no comparison with some of the bs comments made on GFY about other countries and people. They would wonder if we were sane if they actually read GFY :-)

GET YOUR EYES UP FOLKS!!

why is this fellow talking about prisons in mexico? Food and water standards in MOST other countries is much worse? wtf?

We have McDonalds in Europe too... + Coca Cola.
So you get your stereotypical view of Americans from a GFY poster and a comedian who's entire schtick was "me smart, everybody else stupid". Fucking brilliant. I'm guessing from your Hicks worship you're a Brit. There's a country that has a reputation for a having a bit of a superiority complex itself. You were the worlds villians until we took the title.

btw - in Mexico even Mexicans don't drink the water.

No, I'm not a Brit, I'm a Norse... Live to find out what that means.
But let me get one thing straight. I like america, and americans. Sure thing. I am thinking of travelling there next year. Really looking forward to it.

What I have against SOME americans, is that they doesnt seem to know how the rest of the world actually is like. Some of them even think that america IS the world. Thats the scary part

No, what is scary is Norwegian pseudo-intellectuals that take sweeping generalizations made by a comedian to elicit laughs as some sort of fact. You need to visit the U.S.A. and see for yourself what a diverse country this is and how off the mark your stereotypes are.

Um if you are going to use an analogy then use the right one. You should have said "Instead of going into the wilds of Africa, you rather just go to the zoo"

Arrogant American? Just because I don't care to visit your country there is something worng with me? WTF are you going to show me in Germany, concentration camps? I wonder how many of you Krauts my grandfather killed in WWII? Maybe he killed your Jewish child killing Nazi grandpa.

word? It's almost 2005 not 1995.

Of course americans are less cultured in general. But not all. But the point i was trying to make is that as someone said earlier, in order to be more cultured you must visit other places and spend time there, it is harder for people in america to do so, becuase its too much of a hassle.

Stereotypes? Like Bush?

And do you think I base my point of view based only by one comedian? I reffered to his name earlier, but I never said that he described every american.

Ok... I'll stop. But you must admit Hicks is a funny ass. He's not only making fun of americans. He makes fun of everyone beeing naive.

No offense Battus, I was born in Holland and now live in the States. As much as I agree with you, what you say really sounds like ANY country during ANY major soccer event. America is an easy target, but also the first country the rest of the world look toward in need of help.

I've been outside of the US. I've lived in Canada, go to Mexico every year, and I think I've been to every country in Europe a number of times. In fact, I have a lot of family in Europe. I have never been to the Middle East but will never go for obvious reasons, or Russia for that matter. I can care less about South America.

There is a huge difference between the US and other countries. While it might common for you to go to lunch in another country, it's about the same as someone in the state of Montana going to Washington to go shopping. A fair portion of our states are bigger than entire countries in Europe.

It was Lane who summed it up best for me. Lane is from Turkey. I asked him once what everyone in his home country thought of Americans. He told me that everyone back home thinks Americans live in big houses, drive big cars, have easy jobs, and are lazy. When he got here he discovered the truth about the US.

The funny thing is that if you take a look at world history, it was Europe who dominated everything - Including both Africa and the Middle East. When England, France, Spain, and Russia pulled out....... These countries were left to fend for themselves. Ever heard of Trans Jordan? Who was in charge there? And now what?

Imagine the less friendly countries. Not to mention the food and water standards in most other countries is much worse than in the US.

Hell I've never been west of the Mississippi River. Once again, no desire too, WTF I want to go to California? I'd go there and the 'big one" would hit.

Also the US is bigger than Europe so an American that travled from Seattle to Miami would have traveled father than some "enlighten" European that traveled Norway to Greece.
My friend got ecoli from eating a hamburger at Jack in the box, and that was in America.
I have also been there a couple of times, and to be honest I can't drink your water, it tastes like shit (but then again I can't drink the water in Spain, nor have I tasted the water in all the states either, Icelandic water is the best ).
Sure America is big, and a lot of Europeans should travel around there to broden their horizon (in regards to America that is), they would probably forget about a few sterio types.
In general traveling is good for you, going to Chicago is not the same as going to Poland, that is like saying going to some American army base in Europe is like going to America.

Fact is that both Europe and America are quite dependent on each other, and we are not that different. I mean for an European going to America it is not very exotic and vice versa.

Hicks had his moments but basically he was a comedian appealing and pandering to people that fancy themselves more intelligent than the majority. Not a difficult thing to do. For real comic genius that points out hypocrisy and absurdity without simply sneering (like Hicks) you must go to Bruce, Pryor and Carlin.
