First jailtime, now 1 BILLION $ in fines for SPAMMERS

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) -- A federal judge has awarded an Internet service provider more than $1 billion in what is believed to be the largest judgment ever against spammers.

Robert Kramer, whose company provides e-mail service for about 5,000 subscribers in eastern Iowa, filed suit against 300 spammers after his inbound mail servers received up to 10 million spam e-mails a day in 2000, according to court documents.

U.S. District Judge Charles R. Wolle filed default judgments Friday against three of the defendants under the Federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act and the Iowa Ongoing Criminal Conduct Act.

AMP Dollar Savings Inc. of Mesa, Arizona, was ordered to pay $720 million and Cash Link Systems Inc. of Miami, Florida, was ordered to pay $360 million. The third company, Florida-based TEI Marketing Group, was ordered to pay $140,000.

gotta love the fact that E-mail spam is illegal in the US.. But junk mail is perfectly fine simply because the US postal service makes money from it..

Those companies will just go defunct (if they are not already). File Chapter 11 if needed and open up shop in another part of the world under another name.

I would be shocked if they see a single penny from that suite.

The US... where tobacco will kill you but it's legal and weed will not kill you but it's illegal. I guess if you know the rules to the game, play it.

Yeah, they would've been better off killing a bunch of trees and stuffing my mailbox with them so I can throw them in a landfill. Junk mail is so much more a problem than spam.

The US Mail is a not government but backed by the government. There for the federal protection. The translation to that is that the right people got paid at the right time.

I once told the guy at the local post office that I wanted them to stop stuffing my box with all the spam shit mail ( AOL ) etc. He told me that Once the Post office is paid to deliver it, it is federal law that it be delivered. Unsolicited or not.

That's because the US cares more about money than murder and rape victims. Everything comes down to and revolves around the almighty dollar.

One difference about postal mail spam is it costs those companies a ton of money to send out.

So they are careful to make sure they are targeting people well..

Email spam on the other hand costs hardly anything in comparison..

Imagine if spammers had to pay as much for sending out email.... Then maybe they would try to use real marketing techniques instead of just seeing if they can email every single person in the world all day long.

Heh heh, whether you are pro spam or not you should know that it costs a lot of money to make any money from email traffic. It is not free by any means.

AMEN brotha

I have to tell you that I am so fed up with the US Postal Service
I live in a wealthy area of San Diego and becasue of the rapid development and the affluence I get NON stop junk mail.

being that I live in a condo complex, and the fact that I travel a lot- means my mailbox gets filled up in tw days to where you cannot even open or put anything in my box..

So what does the mailman do?

He has my mail held for 10 days at the local post office and leaves me horrible messages to take my mail out of the box...

I have missed some very imporatnt mail because of this.
and I can't stand the fact that I have to dela with all this garbage.

I have even complained that my HOA doesn't have a garbage can by the boxes . I'd love to take all that shit out of my box and chuck it immediately.

I can understand some of the spam alws...but when you have physical mail that does the same shit- shouldn't there be a NO JUNK MAIL LIST SOMEWHERE???

If you can get on a No call list, a NO SPAM list...etc...

why not for junk mail???

wrong, spam hosting, hell, even real double optin mailer hosting costs a fuck of a lot more than regular posting..there are no $4.95 hosting specials even with true edouble option mail hosting

so, what is a "real" marketing technique? if you email someone and they buy, isn't that marketing? you sold them a product they wanted (if they didn't want it, they wouldn't have clicked the link in the email). How is that any different ore "more real" than putting a bunch of banners on a site, popping consoles or making sure your site is readily available when they search for something via a search engine? I'm interested in hearing your views on "real" marketing.

That's fucking great... I hate spam. We all suffer because of spam. I also hate getting junk postal mail but its not as bad as spam. What I would like to see done is for there to be more rules placed on postal mail packaging... I hate getting letters that try to look all official or important and they are sweepstakes or car dealerships. Pisses me off.

I suffer because it makes my double opt-in lists worth less...so I hate it because they are my competition ;-)

so, how do you suffer from spam? I'd be interested in hearing solutions and why some people have the stance they do.

I do understand it being a burden on mail servers and companies when the spammer hides their email address or spoofs another address...

The media and his anti spam buddies told him so.

The spam mail vs physical mail debate can go on and on, because they both cross the line where resources go to waste.

When an ISP is bombarded by a few million spam messages per day - it causes a hefty cost that they have to pick up and spammers don't.

With junk mail (postal mail) - the 'spammers' had to pay postage & printing. In email spam, spammers cost per message is much lower, and you end up making the recepient incur costs.
