You Americans are completely CRAZY! Girl, 10, Cuffed for Scissors in School.

Girl, 10, Cuffed for Scissors in School

Sat Dec 11, 4:03 PM ET

PHILADELPHIA - A 10-year-old girl was placed in handcuffs and taken to a police station because she took a pair of scissors to her elementary school.

School district officials said the fourth-grade student did not threaten anyone with the 8-inch shears, but violated a rule that considers scissors to be potential weapons.

Administrators said they were following state law when they called police Thursday, and police said they were following department rules when they handcuffed Porsche Brown and took her away in a patrol wagon.

"My daughter cried and cried," said her mother, Rose Jackson. "She had no idea what she did was wrong. I think that was way too harsh."

Police officers decided the girl hadn't committed a crime and let her go.

However, school officials suspended her for five days. Administrators will decide at a hearing whether she may return to class, or be expelled to a special disciplinary school.

The scissors were discovered while students' belongings were being searched for property missing from a teacher's desk.

School district officials have promised a crackdown on unruly students this year, and new policies give administrators the power to expel students for infractions as minor as violating the dress code, chronic tardiness or habitual swearing.

Administrators say the steps are needed to regain control over a notoriously unruly school system, but some parents have complained that discipline has been overly harsh and that school officials have been too quick to call police about minor problems.

There are 50 states in the United States of America

Pennsylvania is 1 state

That article refers to a state law

only 4% of Americans live in Pennsylvania

But of course, it's more fun to make blanket statements like "You Americans are completely CRAZY!"

I'm pretty sure I can find 50 articles like this : ONE for EACH and EVERY state minimum. Yes, you are ALL crazy...or at least your legislators are and lets not even mention school officials and police force. You voted those legislators in offcie. Why did the school call police in the first place and then why did the police go as far and cuffing the girl to take her away. The article does finish saying:
"Police officers decided the girl hadn't committed a crime and let her go."

Most states....Please do not let the acts of the few go on to make there way to have it become all of the states. Firstly PA is a commonwealth state; secondly this child was made up to be an "example". There always has to be one of those so all the other children can have the incident burned in their collective heads by there parents. Furthermore don?t always believe everything that is written, reporters are notorious for embellishment at times.

Same thing as when they suspend kids from school for having asprin. Because the school has a "zero tolerance" drug policy. Just when you think you have seen the outer limits of stupidity somebody always comes up with something stupider. Stupidity is apparently infinite.

4th grade and they can't bring scissors to school?

I don't really mind the handcuff's thing, if it was for a little scare.... which she didn't deserve in this case.

When I was in middle school, I gave a friend with cramps a Tylenol. I got suspended, and ordered to counseling. This was 15 years ago, too.
A few months ago, my son snagged a roll of rolaids of my nightstand since they look and taste like candy, and brought them to school, and shared them with another child. He was sent to an alternative school for a week, where he was physically threatened by a high school child. My son is ten years old. He also was ordered to counseling in order to return to school.
Meanwhile, my step-son will have rages and throw chairs and he's only sent to the guidance counselor for a "time-out".
Seems pretty incongruous to me.

It was too harsh to take her to the police station yes. But they were correct in taking them away.
Would you rather they did nothing and your child get's stabbed?

No, it isn't "us" Americans.

The ridiculous laws, such as this, keep piling on due to even more ridiculous law suits. If that little girl accidentally cut the "wrong kid", the school district could be facing multi-million dollar law suits. And the really disgusting part of this whole "problem" is that the people that are screaming over these issues are the same people that would sue the city for tripping over a crack in the sidewalk.

Stuff like this does not happen in small towns either. Its always the cities. Small towns work things out and deal with issues properly. Sometimes its shit like this that really makes me want to move back to the middle of nowhere.

Its hysteria and cowardness if teachers cannot handle a 10 year old girl, and call the police instead.
In my schooldays we got spanked by the teachers, if we did not behave. No mercy! It made us good examples in the end. Well... at least some of us

Oh and for the record, our school systems are full of educators who are typically left wing liberals (blue states) that freak out over words like gun. These are the people that make huge issues out of nothing. Hell I remember when I was a little kid, I was getting beat up by older kids everyday after school (I was in kindergarten), so I brought a butter knife to school so I could try an defend myself. Some kid rated my ass out and the next thing I know I have a parent teacher conference about the situation. But, that's where it ended.

My father-in-law was in town for 3 days earlier this year, so I let my boys stay home one of those days to be with their grandfather they only see once a year. One of my kid?s teachers actually had the tenacity to tell me I was wrong for letting my kid take the day off to spend with his grandfather. I fucking blew up on this bitch. I reminded her that parent trumps teacher, that she was a public servant, that my son was a straight 'A' student and the next time she thinks she's gonna tell me how to be a parent, she better remember her place. She of course brought this to the attention of principal, that?s when I referred them to my lawyer. Two days later my son?s teacher reluctantly approached me and apologized for saying something she regretted.

P.S. Teachers are typically morons. You could bend over and take it in the ass all day and you'll still get your teaching degree.

Friend of mine is a senior lecturer at a University here teaching psychology to support teachers etc. - some of the crap they hand in is a god damn joke.

Then these morons are trying to teach our kids the basics and have the audacity to judge and form an opinion on what's best for our kids.

she broke the rules, she was punished for breaking the rules

and I think some of you guys are confused...she didn't take the normal safety scissors you see in school, rather the sharp ones that could be used as a weapon...

so, what if she took those scissors and stabbed another kid...then you guys would complain about violent schools with no rules...

I kinda like the idea of everyone born getting an equal chance at an education; don't really think of it as communist. But then again I don't live in America so I'll just shut up.

They could have just taken the scissors away, and maybe called her parents.
Honestly, the person who got the idea to get the police involved should be executed just to make sure they don't reproduce and mess up the gene pool even further

the theory of "public education" is in the Communist Manifesto.

"10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children's factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, etc. "

you do realize the only reason public school exists is so your kids arent slaving in factories. instead they are being born and bred and taught to slave in cubicles.

those who want free education, do not understand the system behind it.

am i the only one who reads around here?

communist manifesto in full: Karl Marx and Frederick Engels 1848

http://www.anu.edu.au/polsci/marx/cl...manifesto.html

i also suggest reading: Deschooling Society

which focuses on this subject at length

http://www.infed.org/thinkers/et-illic.htm

Many students, especially those who are poor, intuitively know what the schools do for them. They school them to confuse process and substance. Once these become blurred, a new logic is assumed: the more treatment there is, the better are the results; or, escalation leads to success. The pupil is thereby "schooled" to confuse teaching with learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence, and fluency with the ability to say something new. His imagination is "schooled" to accept service in place of value. Medical treatment is mistaken for health care, social work for the improvement of community life, police protection for safety, military poise for national security, the rat race for productive work. Health, learning, dignity, independence, and creative endeavour are defined as little more than the performance of the institutions which claim to serve these ends, and their improvement is made to depend on allocating more resources to the management of hospitals, schools, and other agencies in question.

you do realize the only reason public school exists is so your kids arent slaving in factories. instead they are being born and bred and taught to slave in cubicles.

those who want free education, do not understand the system behind it.

am i the only one who reads around here?

communist manifesto in full: Karl Marx and Frederick Engels 1848

http://www.anu.edu.au/polsci/marx/cl...manifesto.html

i also suggest reading: Deschooling Society

which focuses on this subject at length

http://www.infed.org/thinkers/et-illic.htm

Many students, especially those who are poor, intuitively know what the schools do for them. They school them to confuse process and substance. Once these become blurred, a new logic is assumed: the more treatment there is, the better are the results; or, escalation leads to success. The pupil is thereby "schooled" to confuse teaching with learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence, and fluency with the ability to say something new. My kids will probably go to private schools, not church ones though. How does that make me a bad person? Not related to this thread, just asking.

Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia in 1825

Communism

A system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single, often authoritarian party holds power, claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people.

and see this essay

"How communist is Public Education?"

And suspending her for 5 days is sure gonna help her to learn in school. for fucks sake. when i was in school, scissors were on the list of required things you needed. Surprised they let them have pencils and pens...they're definitely just as dangerous. goddamn it. fuck.

Dewey observed that Soviet education was "part of a whole network of agencies by means of which the Soviet government is showing its special care for the laboring class...and to give a working object-lesson in the value of a communistic scheme." Dewey believed that the best way to implement communism in America over the long term was to infiltrate all major areas of American life. Education would, he believed; provide the foundation since pupils could be indoctrinated into this peculiar way of thinking at a young age. Dewey, the father of American 'progressive' education shows his cards with the following statement in the New Republic article: "Reference to this phase of Soviet education may perhaps be suitably concluded by a quotation from Lenin: 'We must declare openly what is concealed, namely, the political function of the school...It is to construct communist society."

here is another great read.

http://4brevard.com/choice/Public_Education.htm

John Taylor Gatto
Speech to the
Vermont Homeschooling Conference
(Note: John Gatto is the former New York State Teacher of the Year who renounced the government school system in his landmark book DUMBING US DOWN. He is constantly in demand as a public speaker.

As a bit of background, the industrial titans of the 1890's began to think that not only could the production line be engineered, but people's lives could be engineered as well, in order to work like homogeneous robots with the machines. People like Rockefeller and Carnegie gave huge sums to prominent academics to see if this could be realized through the educational system. They found that to a considerable extent it could, and it is still being done today as evidenced in the Congressional Record during the Clinton administration. This is the story that John Gatto has to tell.-DB)
