![]() I have a mainstream business that's taking off pretty fast, so I figure I'll check out some rock solid mainstream hosts for comparison with adult hosts.
http://www.rackspace.com/solutions/managed_linux.php That "Option Two" is $300 for setup + $500 a month It comes with a piddly little 100GB, and each additional GB will cost $2 (pre-paid) or $3.50 (for unplanned overage). So basically, if I have a server with them doing about 10mb/sec (about 3000~3200gb/month), it will cost $6300~$6700/month. I also learned that they don't setup any email addresses or MySQL databases for you. You have to do it all yourself. Rackspace might have "fanatical service", but I can get pretty much the same thing for $800/month (or less) from adult hosts, a difference of at least $66,000+ a year. Wow.

Yup, as a basis for example
we provide about 95% mroe than they do and our prices are much lower. Their network providers also arnt that great... its a mix of really low cost ones... theyre probably banking off their customers. |

You know what. They're bloody expensive but I have used them for the past 4 years for all my mission critical hosting. This is not a host to use for a tgp or free site. Rackspace is mostly considered for mission critical hosting and they're worth every penny. If I have a deep crawl happening and my site is down for even a 1 hour window, I'm screwed for the month. That's exactly why I use and need someone like Rackspace for my applications. They're bloody expensive but they earned my business time and time again.

Yeah, I guess the old adage. You get what you pay for holds true. I haven't heard anything but great things about RS service and uptime.

I'm sure their uptime is the best thing about them, but how many people actually need 100% uptime? My servers with my current host have had about 99.9% uptime over the past 2 years that I've been with them. I think if you don't use very much bandwidth and you absolutely require 100% uptime, then go with Rackspace, otherwise forget it. ![]()

I use rackspace as well. SUre, its expensive, but these are different ball games. The minute my site goes down, I start loosing money like you wouldn't beleive. Not only revenue, but money that I need to cover for affiliates as well. An hour can easily add up to a few K, and more on peak times.
Rackspace has its place, I have used them for 2 years and have nothing but praise for them. I can call anytime, and get someone who is basicly good enough to help me through any issues I am having. So far this year, I have had 10 mins of downtime, beacause someone forgot to start the MySQL server on a migration machine (moving from redhat 9 - ES) |

Rackspace is very expensive for bandwith
if you have a server that is very important and you want 100% no downtime. Go with rackspace, support will have you back online within 30 minutes. If you run a TGP then go with someone like rackshack. Rackspace is only for quaility mainstream business who cannot afford to be down |

![]() When I chat with mainstream people and tell them that one of my servers costs $79 a month including 1200Gb of transfer they're often very surprised. These are people that pay $100/mo for a virtual account with 5Gb transfer and $5/gig overage. ![]() |

I host my mission critical mainstream sites at the $99 a month places (The Planet, etc.) I haven't found any difference in uptime between them and Rackspace. Besides, I keep redunandant servers at different isps. Hosting a mission critical server at one isp only wouldn't be good enough for me.
