Interesting. The Fraser Institute is fairly reputable. I believe their statistics for Canada are pretty acurate. You're right that they don't seem to agree with the Australian Goverment.

We only have around 300 homicides a year in Australia so that makes it easier to manipulate the statistics because short term fluctuation can look worse when taken out of a long term context.

An extra 30 homicides a year, which isn't really much could represent up to a 9 or 10% rise.

Just always go the source for statistics. The census people or any official bureau of statistics, whose sole job it is to collect the official figures.

It's just too easy to misrepresent statistics.

This sounds like a slippery slope to me. I say freedom is good, so you ask if people can own large weapons and explosives. Frankly, I don't care if my neighbor owns a bazooka or not. If he really wanted to kill me, I'd be dead by now. I think it's a bad idea that only the government be allowed to own weapons. Restricting weapon ownership is what tyranical governments do. You will find that every tyranical government restricts the citizens from owning weapons and non-tyranical governments generally do not. I digress back to my example of Switzerland and the large numbers of military rifles in the homes in that country, yet they have one of the lowest violent crime rates in the world.

Curtailing "gun" violence doesn't do you any good if "knife" violence rises. Why the focus on "gun" violence anyway, why not just violence in general? That's what I found so suspicious about that Australian government website, there was such a huge emphasis on "gun" violence while violence in general was being completely ignored.

Given the facts, anyone can make his own best countries list, with using a certain perspective.

Do your prefer military power? Do you prefer high GDP? Then maybe America would be on top of your list.

I believe in economic responsibility,
I believe in a strong capitalist system, which also happens to provide help in securing the welfare of the less fortunate, (thats FDR, look it up if you don't know)
I do not believe in tax breaks for the rich,
I do believe in a Progressive tax structure,
I believe the government has a moral responsibility to see to it that all of its citizens have quality healthcare,
I believe in maintaining a strong military,
I do not believe in the war in Iraq,
I do not believe in using the military to bully other countries around,
I believe in maintaining a foreign policy that allows all governments to work together to find peaceful solutions to our problems,
I believe the best way to be a real patriot is to question your government and keep it honest,
I believe in campaign finance reform that gets rid of special interest groups and takes away the advantage of rich candidates with richer friends and allows average people to compete for political leadership in the country.

AND YES, when I feel that people are attacking my country I will stand up and tell them where to shove it when I have had enough, because I love my country as I am sure they love theirs and would not (or should they) appreciate someone doing the same to them.

The ban on guns had nothing to do with the trends in other violent crime. If you look at the increase in assault soley from the time of the ban then yes it has increased, however you'd be totally erroneous to link it causationally as non-gun crime such as assualt had been on the rise for years before the ban on guns and it's just a continuation of this trend. Taking the rise since '96 in isolation is ignorant of the reality.

Why relegate their ownership to governments? We are the government, aren't we?

I have attempted to purchase bazookas, rocket launchers, SAM missiles, etc. When I get to the point of completing the deals, the weapons dealers realize I am a private citizen (not a government) and the deals get killed.

There should be NO weapon or weapons system, I should not be able to buy - period.
