you have to fiqure out your own members or traffic. They will let you know if its to small or to shitty.

Good luck, there are only about 3 people here that know shit about video....I haven't seen any of them tonight....

Mpeg seems to be the choice....300 by 300, not sure about the bitrate but I plan to be an expert by jan 1st.

Cool, thanks for your help. We now offer hi-lo-mpeg for videos, and all at pretty good or above average quality. HOWEVER, I am getting killed on bandwith and have mode NO changes in my settings, so I am trying to figure out what the going rate.average is for a Memeber Area.

I'm a pc user, and I somehow get a lot of video work done :-)

I normally encode with Cleaner XL and use a video bitrate of about 700 Kbs for MPG and WMV files (WMV series 8 video) at 320 x 240 or 352 x 240 video size. That seems to result in a good tradeoff between quality and file size. And I use stereo audio for hi quality and short vids where the sound is important like trailers; and mono audio (WMV 9 series mono 16/32 settings) for lower quality or full length video files.

This notion that you have to have some specific platform to be a "pro" is kinda silly as applied to the porn biz. There is usually more than one way too skin a cat. Most video people in this industry make a lot of money using the Adobe Premiere Pro/Windows platform; the Sony Vegas/Windows platform; or Final Cut Pro/Mac platform. In mainstream Hollywood, and other industries that use video there are still a lot of other systems like Avid, but it's not the be all and end all anymore.

How many formats are you putting onto the site for each video?

Do your stats show that any certain format isn't being viewed much or that one certain format is being viewed more so that you can determine whether to keep them all or eliminate a format?

Then what codec are you using to encode right now and what is it you're trying to provide with it, small good looking video that the surfer can enlarge and doesn't use a lot of your bandwith. Or bigger larger videos that look amazing.

It depends what you are making the videos for?

Are they for hosted movie galleries?

If such I usually export them in wmv format, either 15 second clips at a bit rate of 150Kbps, at a res of 320x240 a 15fps. This usually results in files no larger than 300kb each.

However, if we want to bump the quality a bit (which often happens), I make the clips 10 seconds in length, change the bit rate to 340Kbps and the fps to 25, which results in files no larger than 400kb each.

Are they for members areas

You will want to offer as many options as possible. I personally agree with Jace in his specs:

WM1000
WM500
WM100
MPEG1000

Where the numbers refer to the bitrate, or thereabouts.

The other option is to just have a 'low-bandwidth' and a 'high-bandwidth' option for each format (WMV, MPEG, MOV) as everyone has their preferences.

Low bandwidth in members areas i would make them a res of 320 x 240 but pump up the bitrate and fps so they are quality (512kbps?)

High bandwidth go a resolution of 640x480 with bitrate of 1Mbps.

I hope THAT helps you in your quest for an answer to your question, as you seem to get your panties in a knot if people dont answer it EXACTLY the way you want.

And for the record, I use a PC and Adobe Premier Pro 1.5 ... for most video editing you dont 'NEED' a mega super amazing setup.

I try to give a high a low version and honestly it depends on the length of the video ( in minutes) as to what bitrate I will use, of course the longer the vid, I choose a lower bitrate. Then if I'm in the mood to edit video I'll actually do a higher one into a zip file so they can download it.

Most of the time at 512 kbps and 320 x 240 resolution or 640x480 at 740kbps or in that range .

Honestly, I don't have a general rule because I alter it depending on each video. Then if I watch it and think it can be higher quality I'll alter it again LOL

I had many requests to split the clips up into smaller segments so at the moment I'm splitting each video into 3 smaller clips, then also uploading a high and lo version of the full vid.

That's my not so professional version LOL Editing vids is time consuming and something I wish I didn't have to do One of these days I'll outsource
