I'm a pc user, and I somehow get a lot of video work done :-)
I normally encode with Cleaner XL and use a video bitrate of about 700 Kbs for MPG and WMV files (WMV series 8 video) at 320 x 240 or 352 x 240 video size. That seems to result in a good tradeoff between quality and file size. And I use stereo audio for hi quality and short vids where the sound is important like trailers; and mono audio (WMV 9 series mono 16/32 settings) for lower quality or full length video files.
